Went onto Ikea's site to pick up a Detolf for my son's room and was happy to see that they were on sale (£53) - great, add that to the basket, I thought! Wouldn't let me add it because: 'cannot deliver to your area' was the message on the site - strange, I've had one delivered here before. Assuming this was due to driver shortages, I checked if my local shops had them for collection. Short answer, no, not one shop in the UK has them in stock. Called Ikea Customer Services and explained what I'd tried to do on their site and the response was: "we are discontinuing it." Given how popular it is, that seems really strange; therefore, my immediate thought was it was the typical CS response to get someone off the phone. Anyone else had any issues buying one recently?
They are still in stock at my local store in Texas, and even labeled "top seller". But I was looking recently and noticed a new product that seemed similar. It's a little shorter but basically the same. I wonder if it's the replacement? https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/blaliden-glass-door-cabinet-black-00520519/#content
Labelled as a 'Best Seller' in the UK too. The UK shop is showing the Blaliden as new too; however, it isn't as minimal as the Detolf, so hopefully it isn't the replacement.
Yeah @blakewest I was thinking that’s the replacement too. Maybe the old detolfs are too difficult to put together and shatter too easily? I saw one shatter in person once without anyone touching it
This was my thought - putting my son's first one together did make me wonder how many got broken in the process. I note that the Blaliden is mental framed, so probably less prone to getting damaged during assembly. Akin to a single version of the Milsbo but without the legs.
I have just one deltof I bought a year ago to fit between a couple milsbos. The one of the metal frames was warped, but I really did not want to take it back. It took me a couple hours to figure out how to get the sides square and put in some spacers so the shelves would sit flat. So my conclusion based on one data point is that their manufacturer is crap, so instead of finding a new one, they designed a new product. I'm pretty happy with my milsbos. They assembled without a hitch.
I picked up two additional Detolf in early 2022 during my last move and now have three side-by-side for a display. I feel they are fine for a individual display, but I found it difficult to add lighting and they let in a lot of dust. They are also a bit disappointing compared to a longer single shelf-style display. The Detolf were very cost-effective compared to a more professional display, but I am thinking about upgrading them at some point in the future.
I think the best displays are found when stores are closing and they are letting go of a wide/tall display with nothing obstructing the glass in front. Also a big fan of wooden cabinets (curio/hutch) that let enough light in.
Easier to discontinue due to price hike and bring out something else for more than the original detolf price. Even though smaller than detolf, it at least doesn’t have any open gaps which will help eliminate dust. pros and cons, pros and cons
Oh noooo, I have 2 and have been slacking on getting a 3rd! Guess I'm just going to have to buy the "replacement" one and put it in between the two that I have for balance
