Could use a spot of 'tech support.' I've got a couple of programs on an old PC that's about to bite the dust. No longer have the installers or discs (or money to buy the latest versions). Would prefer not to d/l from a warez site if I can salvage what I've already got. Can anyone recommend a method to move said programs from one PC to another? I've got a big external hard drive to house them--just not sure if I'm grabbing 100% of the relevant files to make the transfer. Thanks for any advice!

My understanding on the Windows side is that installers scatter files everywhere so it isn't just a matter of dragging over a program folder because there are support files scattered elsewhere across the system.

If you still have the serial numbers, try and track down and borrow a friend's installer discs and reserialize it with your working serial number.

Can't just "copy" a program from one computer to another.
The system registry files prevents this from being possible.

Yes, it's unfortunate that it's on a PC.

If it were a mac you could use the migration assistant and a usb cable to transfer all of the programs with a couple mouse clicks.

You could always call the tech support of the software companies to explain your situation and see if they can verify your current install/ serial key before sending you out a replacement install disc.

You could actually copy it over but as has been said it's not as easy as drag and drop.
Is it windows XP or older?
You could actually find the registry entries and copy them over but that would be a lot of work..not sure
    it's worth the hassle ;)

Hey thanks for the responses. It's Windows XP and the software in question is several iterations old (and was probably an employer's to begin with). It may just be time to upgrade. I'll look around for discounts online.

The rampant planned obsolescence in today's PC market would even make Henry Ford feel guilty.
