Californians - Please vote NO on Proposition 8

My only comment is we should have been able to carry LA county or at least keep it a lot closer. I think a lot of the volunteers needed to stop prop 8 were tied up getting Obama elected. Don't give up we will win this one in the long run.

In the mean time buy your gay friends a drink and take straight people you know to task for being on the wrong side of this issue.

Maybe our new president will have the courage to speak to this issue.

 

That'd be nice, but I don't think he or his vice president are for this.
Both have talked only of civil unions.

Shame though, Obama, more than previous presidents should be able to sympathize with an oppressed minority.

 

Obama actually said 8 is wrong and it's wrong to discriminate.

I think this was a confusing thing for a lot of people. I've talked to a lot of educated people who, at first, didn't understand the rhetoric.A lot of people were for Gay Marriage but didn't understand why they should vote No for this etc, until they took the time to research what the prop was about.. The rhetoric and the ads kind of confused things and it surprise me if people got confused.

 

And he was so loud and supportive of it..

Even his acceptance speech for the nomination he shyed away from the issue.
I don't expect any support from the executive branch, reelection in 4 years and all.

 

I am from Arizona, I knew it would pass. I voted no on 102 of course. I registered my mom to vote, just so she would vote no on 102. On the other hand, my sister and dad, knowing their own son/brother is gay voted YES on 102...how F-d up is that? Needless to say, I am not speaking to them.

 

Logically do you seriously expect any President, in their acceptance speech, to focus on any of the 50 States propositions let alone bring them up?

 

He specifically touched on gay marriage in his acceptance speech FOR THE NOMINATION, and was all wishy washy.

ok,,when you say civil unions,,do you mean a legally observed partnerships where two people have the same rights as a married couple sans the church's involvement/blessing & a marriage certificate?? available to gay/straight/trans-whatever couples??

but the couple will get a certificate of civil partnership (that is what it is called in the uk)...just no church involvement??

 

Civil Unions aren't federally recognized, and not the same thing as you can't file joint taxes etc.
Even if they were, seperate is not equal.

 

Exactly! Separate is when you can ride the bus as long as it's in the back.

 

If we had to blow it all up and start again, we could institute something like the following:

- The federal and state governments recognize civil unions between two or more consenting adults.

- The federal and state governments don't bother with "marriage" because that's the product of a religious ceremony

- They just use civil union status to determine property ownership, power of attorney issues, etc. None of this tax break bullshit. ;p

Unfortunately we just keep having to slap patches on top of patches with this stuff and you get confusing stuff like Proposition 8. (Who ever heard of saying "no" to grant someone a right?)
