I know... I can't quite wrap my head around those being anything other than eyes myself! If you get a chance try to pick up some of Sakabashira Imiri's manga, it's very, very image heavy (sometimes four or five pages go by with zero dialogue) and reminds me a lot of Charles Burns stylistically.
Reminiscent of Charles Burns? Wow! That's a very positive thing in my book. I'll look for his stuff next time I'm in Japantown. When I visit Super7 I almost always hit up the Japanese bookstore across the street.
