I was really disappointed with the first two Gogas as well. The clear version is very well done and I'd recommend buying one. Most the stuff is so heavy on the paints that it doesn't fit with my orginal Anraku, but a couple look ok. The ghost whale monsters came out nice IMO.
The tail issue issue is near universal with Gogas. I still don't get what people are so upset about. I think folks had expectations set too high. I never anticipated QC or paint apps to be anywhere near as good as AA's original stuff...how could they be? For what they are, I think the first two Gogas look fine on the shelf next to OG's. I enjoy them as something different. The metallic one looks better IMHO, and I agree the red on the that one you have pictured is anemic-looking Maddie. But it's still not a bad looking toy to me. I had low expectations though, because Anraku was one of the best painters in the game, in his prime. And he has still done some beautiful work over the past several years with his last gogas and "oxidant" rubs. I do agree with Phantomfauna that a few of the releases have had excessively heavy paint application. I think the standard Cambodia has been the worst of the bunch to date in terms of apps and color choice. But a lot of the toys have looked pretty good.
I think you nailed it @Michael Beverage thanks for taking the time to read my mind and write it all out here.
What bothers me is when the toy received differs in obvious ways from the toy advertised. Not to say that they don't look better sometimes, but it's usually the opposite and there's been a lot of paint apps that come across as lazy or rushed with these AA Medicom releases. It wouldn't be an issue if you knew what to expect and they looked like that in the images shown before ordering. I agree with you @Michael Beverage , although I certainly understand with it being Anraku why the expectations are high. But really, whether it's Anraku or the Sucklord (ha, yes I used those 2 in the same sentence), you're going to be disappointed if it's not as advertised. That's one thing I can say for the Sucklord, he makes it clear what to expect , even if it's missing a head. Knowing that AA's fans have high hopes and with the $ we're spending , the least that they (including Medicom) could have done would be to present a more realistic presentation of the paint job you'd be receiving. I think that is angering people more than what brand it is. So many people have legitimate complaints related to that than I have seen with any other makers lately. Thankful I'm 100% pleased with the ones I've picked up, but I feel for those of you that may not have purchased the toy had you known what the end result would look like. It's going to be tough to pass those toys on now too if they look like sloppier versions of the product pics. I think if you're not happy with the paintjob, @hellointerloper , you're right to paint it up the way you want. I personally would have a hard time doing it, but I'm not in your situation, and besides, it's your toy to enjoy so customize away.
I do love my clear Goga (decided to pass on the first two army-greenies) and the little ballerina squiddos (missed out on the full sized Zollomedear! ), but I sympathize with those who have posted their various versions from "quality issues". When I look at maxaltoman's photos that Fusta posted... http://skullbrain.org/bb/index.php?threads/anraku-ansaku.50203/ (see top of page) note that the green and blue Googies are glowing with metallic goodness! ...now is that a fair representation of a pre-ordered toy's paint job? it just makes you drool in hopes "your" toy will be the same. It's a bit frustrating when you receive something that's missing an accent color (especially so!), knowing someone else's has all of the bells and whistles goodness. Ha! perhaps I'm spoiled by buta figs!
Ha ha, I still have a soft spot for sucklord stuff @boon velvet. And I agree @hellointerloper, there are so many of these Goga preorders sloshing around they are great fodder for customs if you aren't feeling the paint job. I have seen some nice ones on IG. I personally want to eventually pick up some doubles to strip for Goga blanks.
Since the Goga and Dako set don't look dry-brushed, I would assume these were already production samples... In any case, I definitely don't see any metallics except for the light blue on the right Goga - which just goes to show that two people will have completely differing perceptions of one and the same photo. For the most part, I think the preview pics looked way worse than the finished toys...
As we're talking about Gogas, when I had to choose between the green and the blue, the green one did not appeal to me at all. With the samples, it already looked a bit dull. The color choice could not make for an eye poping visual combination. I went for the blue, and if you compare to the one displayed on Medicom's booth (previous) link, I am perfectly happy with mine. The green and yellow spray are indeed metallic, but not the red. The only thing that could have been improved is the back which could have displayed more vivid colors to highlight the sculpt details. Consecutive posts because.... Drunk boy has arrived ! Spoiler: Yellow Drunk Boy Yokaiju by plasticxo, sur Flickr When I opened the bag, a really strong plastic/glue smell emanated from it. I'm pretty sure it's from the vest. From the preorder pics, I initially thought it was made of paper or fabric, but it's made out of a printed plastic sheet, like some of the capes of vintage Kaiju. As I have some bad experience with different kind of plastic not going along at all (some parts completely melting other parts of a toy), I removed the vest, and I prefer it that way. Some attention has been put on the painting of the back, so it's definitively worth a look.
so the vest is that plastic, is the loin cloth, cloth? i am glad to see people getting their drunk boys, as it means mine will be here soon.
Loin cloth is cloth @wretchrd cp Both drunk boys turned out great! Vinyl was a little thin in spots on the yellow though. The red vinyl is very vivid. You kind of have to see it in person to appreciate how bright it is. I'll try to take flics when I get home.
I absolutely am keeping my Goga, so I'm not worried about it losing value after being customized... It's going to be a well-loved part of my collection!
Really ? A baby elephant a baby panda and a baby dog ??? What is going on with Anraku ? It reminds me of the "Malcolm in the middle" episode when the mother loses her mind and makes illusionary friends with plastic bottles...
