Have you ever imagined what it’d look like if you married Man in the Iron Mask with a Japanese kewpie baby? Yeah, me neither. Luckily I didn’t have to imagine it, as it already has been, AND brought to life in soft vinyl! Produced in China and painted/packaged/sold out of California, this pustule petite garnishes a fantastic dichotomy of smooth and refined, and textured and beaten. But all intentional! The face as a whole is rather haunting, but sitting atop a traditional kewpie - esque body just adds to the creep factor, while also presenting something I’d say is overall extremely well executed. The textures in the face, while deformed and grotesque, don’t feel contrived or “just because”. And the masked side of the face brings a certain uniformity to form factor of such a misshapen head. There’s also something of a “gimmick”, if you will, where finely threaded hair is intricately and purposefully placed over the mutated side of the face, which hides it until you decide to brush it aside for a full reveal. It all actually adds to the existence of Uglyベビー, and it certainly is ugly. But pain is beauty, and this baby’s a hurtin’. You can find the Instagram page at @ uglybaby__. Aside from my photos of the one I own there’s other provided from the page itself, if you don’t feel like visiting. Those illustrations are really damn cool. Not a fan of hair on sofubi personally, but that little butt is awfully cute
@hellointerloper I’m normally not too crazy for hair on sofubi either, but given there’s a purpose for it I can be more open to the idea/execution.
The newest Uglyベビー offering! GID base vinyl with green, purple, pink, gold and black sprays. Fantastic layout. Hilarious header. I very much enjoy every bit of this release. The doll eye in its gory socket does add an element of creepiness that already exists in droves with this sculpt. There is a very defining amount of signature artistry forming with this toy per every release. I’d hope to see a blank release of this toy, but I also, for some reason, wouldn’t want some rando to throw sprays down on this figure. Spoiler
@MoonspellxRites As are your paints and application, my dude! Thank you!!! I think what heavily appeals to me is the Obake Dog formula: textured, mutilated head, and a smooth, cutesy body. Lookin’ forward to more vinyl colors and what you choose to do with ‘em!
I’m happy to have one of these. Along with the “wash your hands” version this particular release is a stand out favorite for me.
The artistry and weirdness behind the Ugly is demonstrated VERY well in this DCon one off. I’ll let the images speak for themselves. Please take note of the actual brush strokes in the Oni on the belly. Spoiler Creep.
