Stealing this idea from FSR - rather than just talking shit on toys in the fugly thread (it's fun but at this stage I'm finding it a little depressing) I figured this could help get more constructive discussion happening. Every few days someone can post a picture of a toy old or new and the community can throw out a Drip, Flip or Skip with their reasons why (drip being it's awesome you gotta have it, flip being that it's ok but you would probably just end up selling it off, and skip being skip) First up we have this Mx1 from BGT View this post on Instagram For me this is a Flip - it's got some fun elements to it, I like the mismatched feet and arms and the robo elements. It seems like he's been trying too hard to get in on the Uzumark/iluilu train recently with the removable parts and boxed packaging. The face on the crotch is the worst part about it, and super hard to ignore. I dig the colours on this version more than the first release. Close to being a drip but just came up a little bit short on this one.
I like this toy a lot. It's a drip for me. I prefer the previous color way, this one still works for me but the other had more natural looking tones. I really like most of what izumonster comes out with. Less Hitler heads please. The mask is detachable as is the face. That's right, there's another face under that face! Plus detachable arms and stuff. The box is cool, but I love that sofubi comes with bags and headers. I can toss those bags and keep the headers. I hate how many toy boxes I have, they take up waaaaay too much space. M World already put this up for 90000 yen. Crazy since the lottery isn't even finished and of course, it costs 30000 yen. I have found Izumonster to be rather challenging to buy for decent prices.
The head reminds me of Otus by Owl. The wobbly arm reminds me of Grody. Overall its not awful but its another toy trying too hard to be weird. Weird is something that's best when it happens naturally and unintentionally. Yet another rich persons toy. Its a skip for me.
$300 for that? I’d pass on it for $50. I don’t like the asymmetrical design at all. And any toy maker who puts out hitler related stuff can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.
Narrow skip. Gimmicks look nice and I think this paint is a great one. But I hate the inner head, underneath the mask and pictured head. Not a lot of sense in paying $300 for a gimmick that I won't like using.
flip if I found one for a tenner, skip otherwise. 300 bucks for this kind of thing is a world I dont wanna inhabit.
I don’t own any BGT, though I’d like to. Getting one isn’t easy, and the mainstream aftermarket can fuck off. This paint job: skip Another, more “technicolor diarrhea” IZU paint job: possible drip. What is the size of the figure? Also, @badteethcomics, this is a GREAT idea.
I love the asymmetry, but the lean is what's getting me, just lengthen that leg out a bit and it will really balance out the design. It literally leans to the heavily detailed side, forcing me to only look at that. I'm not sure the doll eye is needed.
In photos of the first release, it seems to actually stand pretty level. Could just be how the toy was set up for this photo.
drip for me. i actually inquired about a US release. love the blue base and the oni crotch. but i agree it is heavily derivative of zollmen/iluilu/etc. i think hes shown hes capable of creating his own memorable characters so i look at this as him having fun and doing whatever he wants lol
Right on. I saw a couple collectors photos. Funny thing is, it looked like it was leaning slightly the OTHER way... lol
So, turns out one of the boots is removable? Therefore adjustable... One of the pics I saw it looks to be pretty much balanced.
FUGLY The Big Moon Aiz Medusa is better, and I’m not even a big fan of that one View this post on Instagram
Kappabot by Cometdebris View this post on Instagram This little guy is an absolute drip - brand new head sculpt on the Kid Ace body and we have another classic kappa design by Koji. Everything just sits well and makes absolute sense with this toy. I really dig all of the subtle details, hard edges on the flower, little ufo style beak, rivets down the plated sections of the head - I'm looking forward to seeing clear w/ guts and whatever other ideas Koji may have for this new mini.
The robo kappa is great looking, and a testament to the rule of design that less is more. My one criticism (and it’s not anything new) is that I wish the arms on the body were articulated. It’s what has kept me from picking up any of the original robot version
You would thing @bryce_r is responding to these muthafuckin toys with these bare boned almost one-word reactions to the Kappa Bot.. I want some goddamn 5000 word contemporary art essays here
