Can any of you guys point me towards examples of figures that show short, stubbly hair? I'm looking at reproducing sort of spidery, tarantula hair but can't put my finger on how it would look in vinyl, short of flocking a figure with vintage GI Joe hair!
Immediately, I can think of a few techniques. 1- look at tons of hairy real head figures, just very short light little cuts repeated with a sculpting knife. 2- use this middle tool with all the wires and just kind of dab at the surface, this creates a stubly look you probably see on action figures with facial stuble
Thanks guys! Appreciate the tips. I once used some fine screen to fix a hole in my wall, the spackling paste made a real nice pattern when pushed through the screen and dried, sort of like what I'm looking for. I just don't know if it could be recreated in vinyl. We'll see.
You could try to apply the same theory to clay, get a fine bendable netting, maybe like one used in a butterfly net, or aquarium net and pull it into the surface. Soften it out with a little turpentine. Might be what you're looking for. If it works, you owe me a proto though.
Sounds like a plan ! Maybe I'll go down to Victoria's Secret and do some fishnet stocking shopping...
