    HAHA....that's a name I havent heard in a while.

I collected certain artists back then and he fucked the market on that stuff with his flipping as well.

I hear ya, atease. I wasn't meaning to imply that Anraku collector was buying multiples as trade bait - certainly seems he's intent on keeping them. And while that's cool and his prerogative I don't really like it - not that it affects me at all, as I'm not interested in Anraku. But if it was me, I'd want to spread those out amongst other people that would enjoy them as much as myself. The paint differences in those pieces are so small that it doesn't seem worth it. I dunno, different types of hoarding...

is it hoarding if you are buying doubles of stuff nobody else is after?

  4. atease

    by definition yes.

but really i think it's more the sentiment that i'm trying to imply with the current state of affairs here on the board.
i know tons of people who would have a ton of those spacemen that toygraph just released because they look cool in a group, but if you owned them would you hold them over someone else who wanted it for some retardedly rare figure they want from you?

there's a fine ethical line that is being crossed repeatedly. by the same people consistently.

Is it hoarding if you have a large collection?
Down the rabbit hole we go...

I think there has to be a different term for these people hoarders.

    hoard |hôrd|
    noun
a stock or store of money or valued objects, typically one that is secret or carefully guarded

    Did you ever meet him?

  8. Locomoco

    Locomoco Die-Cast

No, but he bought a set of toys off of me on ebay once, and I accidently forgot to ship one item... the guy left me 5 voicemail messages and 8 emails for me while I was out at a baseball game on a saturday. I called him up to apologize and tell him that I'd ship out the missing item, and he was just screaming at me and refused to calm down. I had to hang up on him twice to shut him up so I could even get a word in edgewise.

    No people skills whatsoever...

Hoarding - how many of the same toy do you have to own before you are considered a hoarder

I do like those Batman Brains and have been hunting a few down just because I like the plush inside - different every time.....would this be considered hoarding?

And because it seems I am the only or at least one of the few actually hunting this Brain - does it even matter?

    What a weird gray area........

How is it a weird grey area?

For example Toto likes Anraku and grabs lots to admire and display. You like the B-man brain for a different reason, but its hardly to use as leverage to get an item out of someone, so again, admirable.

Other people buy lots of the same fig to lure out trades and generally dangle in front of people for cash. weaksauce.

    :?

agree'd - i do not think its right to grab at a few of one toy in hopes of trade baiting it or flipping it - but is it alright to build armies? what does the group think about building armies of one specific toy ....

  13. Parka

    Parka S7 Royalty

I think that would be frowned upon when its a limited limited piece. A large run figure I can't imagine people would be too pissed.

I'd rather people bought armies of figures to look at than to customise. But thats another issue

Especially when they're buying them and insta-baiting them for other stuff. I guess the distinction we're trying to point out is the intent of acquiring it - to have because you like it, or to have it because you know others want it and can get stuff for it.

  15. liquidsky

    liquidsky Vintage

If you're buying up rare Exoheads, at flipper prices, to build an army, other collectors are probably going to be pissed as its going to fuck up the after market and some collectors are still just trying to get their hands on one.

If it's something kinda common that needs a home, sure, why not.

im down with that - carry on

Yeah, the B-Man army and the Anraku army are similar in that neither of you are buying them to flip/trade. Where the difference lies is that no one wants the B-Man, but LOTS of people want the Anraku. While both "hoards" are better than trade/flip hoards, the Anraku hoard bothers me (in theory since I'm not personally interested in Anraku) where the B-Man does not.

Manimal - give HMS a B-Man. It's the least you could do.

    This has happened to me.
    - Toy hits
    - I put a "want" out there
    - Someone hits me up with a way inflated price
    - I don't respond

What burns me more is when I sell something to someone and I find out later they have one or two already.

Ed, this needed to be, thanks.

why would anyone hoard shitty toys?

  24. JAY

    JAY Super Deformed

    Some questions...

If I already have the piece and bought an extra, would it be hoarding?

Buying that extra piece, thinking for a possible trade for a grail or a sought after piece for example would be frowned upon by the community?

A few of the members have started out quite late in this game, some of us last year, a few years ago, this year...none of us has any chance to compete for a rare toy against all of the OGs here or long time collectors.

One viable chance, at least for us, is to hunt for something that we know we can trade for our own grail.

Is this such a wrong "intent"?

I know, some newer and rarer toys are being flipped to double or tripple price, but to some collectors....these rare toys are sold almost lower than the usual price from the YJA price or simply traded.

And isn't this an opportunity for some of the members to take a crack at a rare toy you can only buy from YJA at a lower, much affordable price on the boards?

I've bought stuffs from members here that is only available from YJA or very exclusive sources, and I am thankful to them. Why would this be frowned upon?

Hoarding suck, buying multiples for flipping, suck. But what about the points and reasons mentioned above?

awesome. I prostrate myself before your frankness. but still don't have an answer to your question.

Side note, I have never ever ever purchased more than one identical toy upon its release for any reason. Sure as shit not to use as leverage or bait. I treat each and every one of my pieces like something I'm going to have for the rest of my life. I rarely trade toys, because I love every single piece I have. If I choose to sacrifice something I love for another toy I *REALLY* want, I'm going to appreciate that new toy vastly more than any hoarder/flipper/jack-ass could ever imagine. that's part of the charm of toy collecting. The loss and gain, the give and take. Sacrificing something for something. THAT will make you appreciate your toys and the community.
