An extra being a zombie? That's awesome!

This last episode is pretty much the episode that will up to the midseason finale and the rest of the season. It's going to suck waiting until january. at least it won't be too long. The Breaking Bad wait is killer..
Seems like Daryl will find out his brother is in Woodbury. It will be interesting to see how he handles things when shit does hit the fan. We've got 6 good characters, and unfortunately I don't believe all 6 will come out of this alive or at least without major injury

I really like this season but I'm really waiting for the Governor to show the audience some crazy stuff.. He is so watered down on the TV show. The "heads in the water", the little girl zombie etc could have been great scenes.
But they are always countered by the Governor's calm actions and romantic shit. To me this doesn't make a better character. It doesn't set up a duality or conflicting element.

It almost seems like the guy keeps those heads in there because he's fucking bored...not crazy.

On the other hand, the Governor in the comic was sadistic, brutal and fucking scary...I was sort of hoping that that was how they were going to write him. So far he's just meh. At this point Merle seems more unstable and frightening.

Anyone who hasn't read the series should really pick up TPB 6-8 of the series.

No disrespect to those who have read the comic intended, but sometimes I'm glad I haven't, because I've come to think that this show has totally redeemed itself, and don't have the clearly-awesome comic to compare it to. Midway through Season Two I never would have imagined that the show would become this engrossing. I actually thought that the death of Shane meant that the show would become more boring, not the opposite. Nice to be wrong sometimes.

I never really liked Shane. He was always a bit of a wildcard with a bad temper. Would always throw tantrums whenever things didn't go his way (which was almost always). I was glad to see him go. But like you said Dean, this season has improved so much and has gotten so much more interesting, not only in the zombie killings but also in the development of certain characters.

Shane was the best character for the first two seasons. His fatal flaw was his dumb attachment to Lori. He should have just killed Rick.

What's your appeal to Shane? Not trying to start an argument I just don't get why people liked his character? I like Glenn the most. I think I just relate to the way he acts (can be a leader, chooses not to).

    My arguments are this:

    1) Rick would not be the character he is today without Shane's prodding him along. Shane realized early on what it takes to survive. When the group wanted to play house, Shane's arguments against some of the things they were doing were solid. The should have stopped looking for Sophia, and killed Randall. In fact basically how the group is now owes more to Shane, than Rick.

    2) Shane was cast in a villainous light for the drama/love triangle aspect of the TV show. In fact his character was very one dimensional in the comic and last only a few pages. If you take away the dumb TV lovesick obsession of Lori and look at him on a whole what he did for the group- he was a good guy. He definitely was close to Rick, tried to get him out of the hospital, was heartbroken he could not. He protected everyone, not just Lori & Carl. Sure he was a hothead, but he would not put up with shit like Carol's abusive husband.

    3) People go on about him killing Otis and his attempt at killing Rick. He killed Otis to save Carl. In fact he gave Otis a chance to leave. He said leave me, but Otis would not. He knew they both were done if one of them didn't go down as a distraction and Carl would die. He forced Rick's hand because Rick was not the best decision maker in season 2 at all. I don't think he really would have killed Rick but was just so sick of him running the show getting more people killed. Ultimately he could not live with everything the way it was in this new world and unfortunately his dumb obsession with Lori was a catalyst for his demise.

I really enjoyed how well used Shane as a character was in contrast for all the pussying around of Rick.

Which was really surprising since he didn't even click much back when I first picked up my first TWD comic.

Also, I hope the governor gets uglier on the show.

Lixx, I think you're off the mark. The way I see it, the only reason Shane did anything for the group is because Lori and Carl were part of it. Don't forget, Shane was going to abandon the group when he was convinced he could never have the relationship he wanted with Lori/Carl.

Re-watch the first scene of the first episode, when Shane and Rick are eating hamburgers in the patrol car. Shane's veiled jealousy of Rick's marriage is there, as well as showing that Rick and Lori's relationship has been strained, something that continues right up until her death.

Rick gets a lot of criticism for not being as hard as Shane. I can give him a pass for that. He missed the end of the world, never got to see it fall apart, and more than once they showed him trying to adjust to the new normal. (He's a little like Buck Rogers in that respect, or maybe Steve Rogers.)

Regardless of where Rick was, he is where he needs to be now. Season 1 and 2 Rick wouldn't have put a machete in Tomas' head. I also wonder if Shane would still be around in some capacity if the actor hadn't quit.

Shane's approach and unresolved feelings for Lori aside, killing Otis and trying to kill Rick is enough to put him in the "bad" column. The group is better off without him.

One thing I don't get...is the motivation of Michone. why would see have any and I mean any impulse to go back to Woodbury?

A combination of lingering concerns about her old friend and the desire to enact revenge on the Guv for trying to have her killed, I'd guess.

^^^Yup. Hate for the governor and Mearle. Plus to get Andrea out of there, and even to help her new group.
Mid- season finale ended better than I expected. Can't wait to see how this plays out- but not an overly dramatic wait for February.

Seriously as hardened and weary as Michone comes across...There was NO need to go back. None. Most of the Andrea stuff was offscreen and implied but I think it's poor writing. So far Michone has come across as a loner.

    melek_taus Mini Boss

A loner yes. But smart as well.
I think she may feel that no one can make it alone. Plus she had a score to settle with Mearle and the governor for trying to kill her. And she witnessed Mearle take Glenn and Maggie. She seems the type that wouldn't just shrug and go on her way. Not in the AMC version of Walking Dead anyway.

"Poor writing" by, in the case of this episode, Mr. Robert Kirkman.

I like that Tyrese is now officially here. I kept thinking though when they got through that broken fence in the prison, why didn't Glenn or someone in the group at least tie it together? It was mentioned in an earlier episode, so it's not like they didn't know about it. Why would you have a backdoor entrance to allow zombies to keep coming in? Very counter-productive in clearing the prison.

    Some more thoughts:

-As much as Andrea is one of the worse decision maker, I hope she makes it out (you know she's going to be crucial in saving Daryl) just so it's really uncomfortable the rest of the season with Michonne.
    - Rick having a Shane flashback was cool. I know it was just a vehicle to show Rick still wrestling with his inner demons, but still cool to see Bernthal.
    - Capture of Daryl should have been shown?! Come on this guy is an ace tracker and has got out of some of the stickiest situations.
    - Meryl should have said something back to the Governor when he accused him. That's not writing Meryl well for that situation. I also have a hard time thinking Daryl could be persuaded to stick with the group after finding out his brother is alive.

Great episode though. Now I have to find something else to watch till February!

I'm excited that Cutty is on the show. He was one of the characters from The Wire that I was rooting for. Great actor.

I'm also glad that the second half is in February. The Breaking Bad summer thing is killing me.
