    thanks sb, much appreciated...!

yeah, i'm a huge fan of the original indy, fu manchu and the other serials indy is based on...orientalism, tiki and 'exotic' culture from the earlier 20th century. also wanted to pay some tribute to the comic book ads of my youth. this is sort of the dream version of the shrunken head you'd save up your pennies (or stamps) for and anxiously mail order...

    cheers!

thanks everyone, wasn't sure what the reception would be here...but you've all made art boy feel warm and fuzzy before the big show.

yes, these are my original babies. yes, they took forever to do. i'm launching a new brand named "Maneki Nekro" based in Oakland. my creative partner is moving out to the bay next month and we're joining forces to create a line of deluxe novelties. there are more conventional resin figures on the way, including a ball-jointed platform toy, a bootleg/tribute, and a mini blindbox series that should debut at Dcon.

There are at least 2 more shrunken heads coming down the pipe, one's being sculpted, the other design is still on paper. also have a handful of customs *nearly* done that were cut for time before Anaheim. :(

totally up for collabs/commissions/group shows, hit me. (anyone want to pimp me on their blog before the weekend, i'll mow your lawn or something...!)

ok, time to get some laundry done before i load up the nekromobile...

    cheers, gang.

Really nice man! Polyfoam? I have never heard of that. Sounds cool. Do you pour it into a mold or do you sculpt it?

sculpted in oil clay, molded in brush-on silicone, and then it's a cast in pigmented urethane foam: http://www.smooth-on.com/Rigid-and-Flexible/c10_1121/index.html

i also powdered the molds with talc so they'd take acrylic paint easily.

unlike latex foam, there's no putting it in a blender or oven, thank g-d...just A+B like regular resin. anyhow, the cured foam makes a nice easy medium for hair-punching. the shrunken heads are only the second foam process i've done, but i really like it. the first one was the mask for this guy:

which was 'trial by fire', i assure you. i ended up needing 3 or 4 big syringes shot into the mold rapid-fire like. mostly because the mold has a core positive in it, and the expanding foam didn't fill the thin areas at all. the finished mask fits the animatronics like a glove, though.

If you start doing full scale fiji mermaids give me a yell. I've always wanted a fiji mermaid but don't have US$60 000 for one from a freak show auction.

Wow man that sounds like a really intense process. I would love to see how you make them one day. Speaking of I think it would be awesome if all us bay area resin folks got together and talk shop.
