Mizuno teamed up with Lulubell for this really interesting vinyl figure. The proportions are so odd and pretty at the same time. I would LOVE to see some really creepy paint applications. I can't see myself buying a cute painted version but if they do something along the lines of her Hell Baby or Ravina The Witch style paint I would be all over it.
Hell fucking yeah! I thought Junko was Japanese though? Shouldn't this be there or is it because Lulubell is involved? Im confused now lol. @__@
The sculpt is just being showcased in the Thailand Toy Expo because that's where Luke currently is, but it'll be produced in Japan like everything Lulubell does.
I figured since she lives and works out of California that this topic would make more sense here. She was born in Japan though.
Oh ok that makes sense. Still though would love to see more sofubi of her work in the future after this. Her paintings and comics are incredible to look at. So im all for this first time sculpt of her stuff.
Ha! Boy, am I daft. I thought @Headhunter was questioning why it was in Thailand, and not in Japan. There goes my dummy freebie for the month!
I hear her second cousin once vacationed in Corsica . . . does that mean we need yet another new forum?
Something was not sitting right about this figure since seeing it yesterday... then it clicked. There's a faint hairline on the forehead there - I'm guessing these figures are going to have some pretty substantial hair implants.. huge wavy hairstyles to reflect her illustrations would be cool.
I've been a huge fan of hers for years. I'm super excited for this new piece and can't wait to see more on the evolution of this..
This is a fantastic meeting of two loves for me. I can't wait to see the finished article. It looks quite nicely simplified for soft vinyl, too: not just making one of her KR toys in a different material.
I love Junko Mizuno! One of the three tattoos I have is inspired by her; it is the jellyfish girl that was reprinted years ago in the Secret Comics Japan TPB. I spoke to Junko years ago at Gallery Nucleus and she told me then that she was working on a sofubi toy after having some less than ideal experiences with KR. I'm excited that it'll happen through Lulubell, as I love the whole squad there. Hopefully there'll be a line of minis or something to complement this full size doll. Sign me up!
Love Junko. When I first got together with my partner 13 years ago I got her a junko book from a comic book store I was working at. And since then her collection of junko toys is massive as was the amount of money I spent on said collection. Looking super forward to these toys!!!!!
If there's no definitive answer by next weekend, I'll ask Luke. It'd be cool to have this on display at Five Points, too.
That looks very promising indeed. I still have her book 'Hell Babies' with the embossed plastic glittery slip cover. Its a classic! I think this sculpt represents her work well . . . I think I remember they did a Junko 'my little pony' back in the day, glad to see she's still getting attention.
Stoked to see this Lena has been a Junko fan for years now so this will make her day she picked up a Junko hardcover this week actually:
Saw on IG that the head is made specifically so it can have real rooted doll hair and the breastplates will be removable so they can be changed out.
This toy really represents my collection coming full circle. I started collecting toys in 2009 because of Junko Mizuno. I moved away from most Western toys and into sofubi in 2012/2013. Now I hope to add at least one of these in my collection.
