http://blog.livedoor.jp/gargamel/archives/55527146.html i was really really hoping for that globby or the saddled killer, but glad to have this little guy on his way to me: some seriously incredible offerings...
That Walking Killer with Randall... Absolutely amazing. I really hope we see more of this in the future.
All of the Spoon Family toys were painted by Kiyoka, @quentor, but he did make the characters look quite nice. Best toy giggle in ages: Congrats, as always, to those that landed what they were looking for.
I'm pretty surprised I hadn't noticed this before, and I'm sure this has been pointed out before, but the Globby head looks strikingly like the octopus from the old side-scrolling shooter Parodius Anyone know if that was an intended homage or whatever? Edited to add another shot from the game. Insanity!
Congrats. I know you have a pretty great collection of Bwana/Gargamel stuff. When I saw all the Kiyoka painted Bwana stuff, I was hoping you'd get something from the batch.
It does look pretty similar! ...but oh my, Maoi head spitting Maoi heads in front of a Maoi head planet. That is pure hilarity!
I know, right! It was intended as a parody of the much more well known shooter Gradius (parody + Gradius = Parodius). I think the Maoi heads might have been the best bit. There was a time when I was emulating all of the better SNES shooters and this one was as good as most, but it was just incredibly silly. The round protruding "mouth" (along with the other similarities) of both characters would seem like more than coincidence, but I guess it's possible that this is just a stylistic way that octopuses (I just found out octopi is technically incorrect) are represented in Japan and Bwana was aware of that without knowing about the game. Dunno.
@evom Oh, wow, didn't think we'd get closure on that one so quickly. Just for reference the first Parodius game came out in '88 (so, it is possible that the first Takoyaki he witnessed was actually from that video game. OK, so that's a bit of a stretch. What can I say? I want to believe). Also, if you Google 'Takoyaki' all the results are for an octopus-based snack dish, but if you search 'Takoyaki character' you will get several results with the little pink be-snouted octopus. No, no need for that particular emoticon! You're absolutely correct. Edited. I guess I got the name mixed up with Polybius , which I also misspelled, and a lot of people have probably heard about. But if not, is one of the greatest urban legends ever, about some kind of mind controlling video game developed by the CIA to experiment on kids or something.
Seriously! I came here to post this same picture. BIGTIME congrats to everyone who scored -- There is no shortage of sincerely great one-offs from this show. THIS guy right here, though, damn. I am so looking forward to the first run, and will not sleep on it. Gargamel really knows how to capture a sense of fun with their sculpts.
I've always wished that Gargamel would do a painted release of Randall. But this little guy above would definitely be on the wishlist too! Here's the painted version that Kiyoka did of Randall years ago, still my favorite:
