Latest casualty - Flash Dako

The inspiration for this comes from the original Flash movies on Anraku Ansaku's website. Not an exact match... I went with a slightly more vibrant palette

I painted over a Hogan Dako.

I was pretty hesitant to post these photos actually because I am sure painting over an existing Anraku paint job is taboo to many.

Hope no one's head explodes too messily

This sculpt had never grabbed me in any big way before seeing this paint-up. Reminds me very much of PK's Andoros from last year- to my mind, your Dako here is like a companion piece to that one....so cool.....

Sorry to rain on your parade here, but I think it's really sad that you painted that figure.

For me, and I admit I'm an anraku purist, the paint apps on these figures are delicate and show the details of the figure. I know you're trying to capture the moment in that flash video and I can understand that, but I think the paint looks too thick on it.

I'm not going to be harsh about it. It just makes me sad. I'm glad mine will not suffer an additional paint app.

this is still all a learning process for me

i knew going in that applying this much color to an anraku sculpt was not going to win many fans, and honestly i am still torn on whether or not i even like my end result.

i believe all of the anraku toys i have seen largely leave the clean vinyl surface showing.

i felt good going in but had second thoughts once it was too late if that makes sense.
i do like how i put the paint on, but the end result looks to me now more like a model than a toy. it's hard to explain the feeling i get now

What type of paint did you use? Is it v-color or something else? Looks like something else to me.

 

it's v-color, but i used flat paints except for the gold areas
the red that glows in black light is very flat

 

love it....looks great.

the matte finish gives it that realistic Godzilla resin kit feel which kinda contradicts the sculp a bit...

still, it rocks...

The figure was painted. By anraku. That's my opinion.

Personally, I think the paint on it looks thick visually, and the matte finish doesn't do much for me on any figure.
if it was a blank, I would not have an issue with it. those are meant to be painted.

ultimately, it's your toy to do what you want with. we'll leave it as we agree to disagree.

 

I think its the lack of gloss that throws me. Most Anraku toys are super wet looking. Not sure if its his vinyl or paint or both. Its that what I like most about his toys

Personally I like the colors, but I don't like the flat look. If a gloss was added it would look finished to me.

 

will v-color's clear coat add a gloss?

 

O yeah for sure. That what it does ...hence gloss

i've always loved the simplicity of the original paint by anraku. with that said the black light effect totally captures what you were going for. good job. i love those flash animations....that's what got me into the line to begin with. i would like to see what it would look like with the gloss added though. it might make it pop more....... i am always looking to add more anraku to my collection.....

EDIT - the difference really isnt showing up in the photos. how much clear coat should be applied typically? and i assume it is thinned the same as the paint?

and also ask - is there a way to avoid or get rid of dusty looking surfaces where there is overspray or something? it happens in recessed areas of the toy's surface.

 

Your not thinning it enough. Thin it some more and when you spray hold the trigger back all the way releaseing huge spray. It works better for clear. Also on those "dusty" areas. That is spiderwebbing again a classic sgin of not being thinned enough. Just hit it with some thinner and that will solve it.

I would do a few coats of clear. Just thin is plenty and don't be scared to spray.

 

ah just apply some thinner directly to the toy in the webby areas?
