Yeah, its cheap but not that cheap. Still, they are mostly perfect ports and they come with extras. Most often there are multiple versions of the game, the Japanese and then the localised English version, its surprising how different they can be sometimes. Also, extra port-specific enhancements, like a rewind function or save-states to save whenever you want. Theres also a lot of display functions that can be useful, and remapping buttons etc.

I also like the Neo Geo arcade ports that have their own list under 'ACA Neo Geo' on the Hamster website. Like the Arcade Archives, many of the games available have never been released outside of Japan before ...

No love for the Cuphead DLC? That game is so hard but not frustrating. Also very satisfying to beat. It really comes down to practice and repetition. It may be the best looking game out there too. I'm enjoying playing it again. I hope the studio puts more out and maybe gets a bit quicker with development ha.

chris, did you play Hollow Knight? I’ve heard of you enjoy cuphead you’ll like Hollow Knight. I loved Hollow Knight, and I’m not usually one for unforgiving platformer games, but it’s just so good.

I bought this in a sale the other day for my Switch. I'm absolutely loving it, they're all similar in gameplay of course, but all have their individual charms. I completed Final Fight pretty quickly on my own ... only had to use about 40 continues  ... never played it before, i was always a Streets of Rage kinda guy.

    Final Fight (1989)
    Captain Commando (1991)
    The King of Dragons (1991)
    Knights of the Round (1991)
    Warriors of Fate (1992)
    Armored Warriors (1994)
    Battle Circuit (1997)

Yeah, I haven't played that one much yet but it looks good. I'm now obsessed with Armored Warriors and King of Dragons. Lots of Dragon head-lopping and Mech fighting. Its a neat touch where you can take parts that you've bashed off other mech's, and add them to your own.

Thats a great beat em up set! Captain Commando is a favorite of mine, I wonder if its the unedited Japanese version (some characters have finishers that were removed for the US- like Ginzu slicing opponents in half and Mack the Knife dissolving guys to pile of bones)

I bought the Last of Us part 1 yesterday I’m about a third of the way through it… and I’ve found that I’m of two minds about it. Firstly: I *love* the Last of Us. Love it. I have played it through at least a combined 10 times on the original ps3 version as well as the remastered ps4 version. Ive got all the trophies short of the completion on hardest difficultly on ps3 and ps4 version. This is a game everyone who has the chance to play should.

So I was amped about the remake for the ps5 based on the engine from TLoU2.. I believed “rebuilt from the ground up” to fully utilize the ps5’s hardware was going to mean not a new game per say, but a bigger version of one of my favorite games. For example: I thought that since the game was rebuilt using the game engine from The Last of Us part 2 it was going to utilize the enhanced movement features present in the sequel (like being able to jump, or go prone and crawl) and they were going to rework the level design to account for this… spoiler: they did not add any new features or elements to the original game. It is exactly the same game technically as it has been since 2013. It looks better, and loads almost instantly; but it’s exactly the same game. I’m enjoying seeing it with refreshed graphics, but I’ve played it so many times I’m breezing through it. I was hoping the revamp of the enemy ai (which they touted) was going to result in new, more challenging combat than was possible on the original version. But the enemies spawn in the same places they always do, and don’t behave noticeably different.
all this is to say if I had known this was more of a remaster than a remake I would have waited to grab it used for less than the $70 retail price because I’ve played this game through so many times I could finish it in my sleep.

Tl;dr: the new last of us remake for ps5 is more of a “remaster” than a “ total rebuild from the ground up” remake and I wouldn’t have paid the $70+ to get it on day one if I had known.

you live and you learn. That being said- if you’ve never played the Last of Us and you have a ps5, you should definitely play it. It’s a high water mark in what a video game can be in terms of telling a story and being a great game to play.

    Alright.
Let say you have a PS5 and you have The Last of Us but never played it. Would you recommend playing the original game or go for that remaster instead?

If you’ve got the ps4 remastered version and the “left behind” dlc I’d say you don’t need the remake and can save yourself $75 or whatever after taxes. The graphics are nicer, and the non Existent load time is nice but not necessary. If the remake graphics are a 10/10 the ps4 version was like 8.5/10 and the load times are never more than 20 seconds. Plus the remaster is probably super cheap now.

I hope so!! .. all the games in the bundle have the Japanese/English versions, and I've read about certain games being very different after being localised, but i didnt know about Captain Commando ...

I played the version of Final Fight which included the female characters Poison and Roxy. I know the US version changed them into two male characters.

I'm currently enjoying ToeJam and Earl - Panic on Funkotron ... 8)

I recently borrowed my brothers kids 'Link's Awakening' for the Switch. I played the original on the Game Boy back in the day, so it was fun to play this updated edition. I did notice it was quite a bit easier than the 1993 version, with many more places to fill your heart meter etc. Still. it was a lot of fun with very cool graphics. The control system is super-responsive too.

I've now bought, and have been playing Breath of the Wild for a few weeks and i love it so much. Its like a dream come true for this old Zelda fan, even though there isn't so much emphasis on dungeons, its still firmly a Zelda game. I'm late to the party i know, but its really impressing me.

Yesterday i bought the 'Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration' and i'm loving that one too. I'm aware that Atari have released many compilations of their games over the years, but this one is pretty special. The games are much more varied (across the different consoles) and this time there are about 20 ports of their arcade classics. They have also included some updated versions of certain games, and the whole package is designed like an interactive museum exhibit. Its very informative with shit-loads of nerdy stuff that should keep the average retro gamer entertained.

Two games that stood out so far are 'Black Widow' from 1982 and a new mash-up featuring gameplay from various vector classics called 'VCTR-SCTR'. I'd never heard of Black Widow, which plays a bit like 'Robotron' with the dual stick controls. It plays really well for an old duffer from '82.

Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece. I 100%'d the game, and I still play it more than newer games I've bought. The shrines, labyrinths, and divine beasts are it's dungeons. Though most are more puzzle based than combat.

Indeed, i was wondering if all the praise for it was accurate. After playing it for only a short time, the quality of game-play is incredible. I can already see why its so beloved.

    BotW is absolutely a masterpiece.

There is a feature where you can see how many hours you have spent 'in-game' and those hours add up VERY rapidly; it is so easy to get immersed in it and simply lose track of time. My son and I played a lot of it together and the graphics are so stunning that there were times when we'd just sit and watch the sun rise or set, or the weather change, in a particularly stunning location; how many games make you want to do that?

I'm jealous that you get to enjoy it fresh - it is a truly brilliantly crafted piece of game design.

    Enjoy Moogink!

I loved everything about BOTW except for the weapons breaking. Drove me nuts, and overall was a hinderance to "enjoying" the game the way I would have liked. Still an A+ game though.

I've been playing Dragon Quest XI. It's about as straight forward as it gets, but I haven't played a traditional jrpg in years so I'm having a blast.

Now you mention it, I was a bit worried about that when I heard about it. Playing the game its not bothering me too much, but I know what you mean. Luckily there seem to be quite a lot of weapons scattered about, at least on the great plateau anyway. Also, it does tell you when your weapon is heavily damaged so you can swap it out before jumping into combat.

I just got a Switch and haven't gotten around to playing any modern games yet - I'm finally progressing in Super Mario Bros. 2 thanks to the save progress feature! I think I might be at the final boss? Previously I don't think I ever got further than level 3!
I'm trying to pick up used games, rather than paying full price - so far I just have Metroid: Dread, but really need to pick up Mario Kart, and a few others (Mario Wii-U, Luigi's M3, BotW).

^^^First party Nintendo stuff is a booger for sales, but there's a bunch of great stuff out there, especially if you're just getting the system.

Yeah for me it was about breaking the "flow". I would just be playing normally and just using and swapping out my stuff, but then I would find I was running around to stock up on my favorites instead of continuing the journey. It wasn't a deal breaker, but it's the one thing I hope they change in the next iteration.

I recently scored a PS5 at my local Target and I’m going to start playing God of War Ragnarok in the next couple weeks. Also super excited to play Destiny 2. Any other PS five games that people recommend?

It's technically a PS4/5 game, but if you haven't played it Ghosts of Tsushima. Also, Elden Ring.

I just ordered Shredder's Revenge for my wife for Christmas. One of her all time favorites is Turtles in Time and this looks like a totally worthy successor!
