In all fairness a million ratfink toys and mixed parts were done long before MVH, likely inspired by Hirota more, but rat fink is pretty much open IP in sofubi at this point.

Sure, but i'm thinking more the legs. The way they angle inwards from the chunky, squat body. Looks exactly like the DX. Also, the oversized head resembles the recent Punk Drunkers collab he did recently. Combine that with the mixed-parts rat fink ....

I actually saw the Gamaotako more, maybe it's the lack of ribs, and the more fold like texture.

But the arms are more that new style you see, with the heavily flexed and muscled forearms that brands like Planet Asia started.

Anyway, regardless of influence, it's agreeable it's wholly unoriginal. But hey it will sell, and i guess that's all that matters in this market.

the 'artist' was torn between biting MVH or HS hence one clenched fist.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I didn't find the decision itself to produce another Rat Fink tribute indicative of the desire to emulate Rich's work. As it was already pointed out, it's the overall build and anatomy of the figure. To me the belly looks a lot like a small, underdeveloped or child version of the original Ollie. That said, if one had any doubt about the Rat Fink connection, specifically in relation to Mutant Vinyl Hardcore's production, it becomes more evident with this 4-eyed variant (which even Rich appears to be irked by in the comments):

I don't think there's anything wrong with finding inspiration in other people's work and embedding elements of it into your own. However, if you fail to transcend these aspects far enough to produce something that is truly yours then it just feels like you're being a copycat or trying to make a quick buck.

When I saw that big bang toy release I immediately thought DX rip off. Sad thing is I’ve seen worse DX rip offs at this point.

Also, the even if this was the coolest Rat Fink toy ever made, is it a good idea to start your brand off with someone else’s IP?

I am not a fan of this:

On the lottery form the domestic price is 44,000 yen, which right now is $322, but the overseas price he's charging is $440.

Is Toho granting licenses in Japan that allow people to sell directly to overseas customers through Instagram lotteries?

Me neither. I'm glad someone posted it before I did. Something is just off about it, I was assuming the toho copyright stuff was bullshit ...

I think it’s legit and I think they’ve done licensed releases with medicom too. I agree all the swimmy stuff is a little too silly for me. It’s kind of like, bad or mediocre artist doing the best they can, sometimes create charming results, but when a capable artist intentionally tries to do something bad it just seems odd.

Probably not, but if it works, it works. I don’t think it’s all that bad a design, but I still think it somehow sucks. It’s a conundrum. For some reason I think of the old Count Duckula cartoon when I look at this thing, and I wouldn’t go out of my way to own one unless dude handed me the traditional Rat Fink homage he has up with the lil’ RF onesie. But I’m a sucker for a good Fink homage and little clothing on toys. I find this specific version passable, but otherwise pretty dumb.

It’s the head, looks like a wolf. I dig the paint/vinyl combo though.

Yep, I think you're right. Kinda looks like he's got a beer gut too. Wolfie MG's been downing the Guinness.

not commenting on the figure itself here, but the price is in line with my recent licensing experience. US licenses assume a direct 1 cent per 1 yen price translation. It’s not necessarily up to the ‘artist’ to decide pricing.

    But, jeesus f-ing Christmas… $440…???? WTF….
