People are people. Just like I see people here complaining how overpriced, badly sculpted etc. happen to be the same folks who like all the artist's pics on insta and even compliments with 'wants' and all the love emoticons.. Really.

Well these are things that I have heard from several different sources.. I don't know it as 100% fact, it's just what people told me when I asked the question on instagram after seeing these "fuck you pig" posts that started appearing yesterday.

Apparently Unoblab released a bunch of blanks for a ridiculous price yesterday morning - offering them directly to people who were already customers/shown interest in Telebobo. These blanks were priced higher than most sofubi, I don't want to post the exact price only because I don't want to embarrass people who paid that much for a standard 5 part (?) blank vinyl pull. You could buy a couple of nice painted MVH pieces for this kind of price. Anyway, I think several were released (more than you can count on two hands) and apparently sold out.

Now from what I've heard - Unoblab is a joint venture between Tan and a mystery investor. Anyway, Tan apparently wants to take over complete control of Unoblab - creative control and keep 100% of sales. I'm not sure whether if it's a situation where the investor has been paid back completely and now things are a bit vague between the two guys.. maybe they didn't clarify what would happen once the original investment would be paid back in full? Anyway - there was mention of a "secret sale". I think that was the overpriced blanks - I believe they were sold without the mystery investor having any knowledge of it - and therefore not getting a cut of the (huge amount) of profits. So I'm guessing the investor had friends, told them and that's where the abusive posts on instagram came from. But that last part is just specualtion on my part.. who knows maybe the investor hasn't even been paid back and Tan is just hijacking the Unoblab brand after seeing how lucrative it is.

Have people received the 2nd release Telebobo? I heard a weird rumor that Tan is holding back shipping them out as a threat to his investor partner.. not sure what the deal is there as it would only hurt the brand that he is apparently trying to takeover. Pretty shitty if it is true - people paid good money for those toys and to have the creator hold them back and not ship them out on purpose for some weird feud is a slap in the face to his customers and fans.

Anyway, that's most of what I've heard and can remember... please correct me if I got anything wrong. If these guys got into the sofubi game to make money then it was bound to blow up in their faces sooner or later..

pretty sure I saw one of them up on Mandarake for somewhere above $2000 in the last few days, which was kind of a shock. I rather like the ugly-cute Mimis but these, these are flying over my head, especially at the price points I'm seeing

Yeah.. that price is totally ridiculous for a toy that is what, 6 months old? By a maker who has been around for a year and a half? And that's $555 for chinese vinyl.. not even the good high quality stuff.

    Glenn,

I really do appreciate your enthusiasm as a fan and sympathise frustrations being in a "newer" world of collecting.

However, a good many of these points you have asserted just leave a hot mess of speculation that leads nowhere.

I think the dolls are cool and what not but would never pay those prices regardless if they came out of China or the Moon.

However, wealthy collectors exist or these dolls simply would not sell. Who can say what is the right price or wrong price?

For me personally the appeal the dolls have and many by others is lost soon as the controversy begins- it betrays toys themselves.

Not trying to attack nor challenge you in any way, you certainly can do as you wish but just look at these parts of what you said:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I don't know it as 100% fact

    Apparently

    I think

    apparently sold out

    mystery investor

apparently wants to take over complete control

    I'm not sure

    things are a bit vague

    maybe

    mention of a "secret sale"

    I believe

    I'm guessing

    abusive posts on instagram

that last part is just specualtion on my part

    who knows

    investor

    hijacking

    lucrative

    I heard a weird rumor

    holding back

    threat to his investor

not sure what the deal is

    hurt the brand

    apparently

    shitty if it is true

    people paid good money

    hold them back

    some weird feud

    slap in the face

    Anyway

    the sofubi game

    make money

    bound to blow

    sooner or later
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I ask you, why even bother, why waste time on speculations?

Again nothing personal, just entering the conversation.

Open question to others here on SB:

What is the attraction to dolls that this and many other makers, more often than not; restrict and charge so much money for?

Seems largely driven by instaspam fame and glory . . . like a global pissing contest!

Not an attempt to derail but I heard this song in my head and felt it should be the current theme until a better one gets up!

Zeroed back to the discourse, why do an increasing number of makers go for the "mystery" cape?

These guys are only on Instagram? No website, bigcartel or anything?

I personally like mistery makers, but only if they're not on Instagram. :)

Don't get me wrong, i don't hate it. It very cool to see progress of some of sculpts artist are working on and revealing of their new works.
It's also very cool to not know anything and to then be suprised by a new release of a new toy, when you check a site or blog.

But i think if you really want to be underground toy maker, than you go for the latter, and you'll save yourself a lot of the drama that seems to be attached to most social media.

Because Skullbrain has been boring as fuck lately and I want some entertainment around here. Your list just goes to prove my point, I intentionally worded everything that way because it is specualtion - I wasn't there, I'm only going by what I was told and I'm trying to fill in the blanks. People wanted to know and I wanted to pass on what I had heard.

Anyway, after posting yesterday a few people have to got in touch and explained the situation to me... the whole thing seems really stupid. At first I thought investigating the drama would be interesting but now it's just really put me off dealing with any of those guys involved with this toy. Turns out half of the stuff I was told and re-posted was wrong - good thing I used such speculative language ;)

The truth, "from what I've heard", is just as annoying - I'll let somebody closer to the situation post here and explain things because I don't want any part of it anymore

If you are that bored Glenn for shit sakes draw something
or sculpt don't waste time and true talents on this avenue

That was my main point and I think you got that

I don't want any part of it anymore = wisdom

    or maybe not?

I want some entertainment around here = counter productive

a few people reached out and explained to me the situation, to the best of their knowledge. seems pretty sketchy but i guess thats what happens when you get artists with more love for the pricing than the product in question.

I heard a rumour via a friend of a friend who had allegedly read on the interweb that Greg Mishka was the bastard child of Kozik and Coop, but they had to put him up for adoption because the UN were afraid his ego couldn't be contained and it could speed up global warming if he ever found out they were his real parents.

I think he might suspect already!

also i think its important to separate art from artist in all genres/mediums but i do feel like this community is too small for some of that. exposing funky dealings like this is important to me because i dont want to collect from someone who is maybe not the best person, idk. thats where im looking at it from at least

Can someone just explain what happened already so we can all decide for ourselves whether or not we want to support this/these artist/artists?

I don't understand all the secrecy and pussy-footing. People constantly call each other out on SB all the time, but god forbid we do the same for the toy makers.

I'm sorry for being so straight forward, but it's really irritating that toy makers seem to be on some kind of different level that grants them immunity from accusation.

I'm curious if this has anything to do with why lotto winners from September still have not received their toy. Its a bit concerning and makes me wonder whats to come of all this.

    Understatement of 2016 right here.

I've been in the hobby for about a year and a half now, and it amazes me duplicitous people can be. The mentality seems to be "if I don't get mine, time to round up the mob".
