Surprised at the difficulty I am having in sourcing non-adhesive-backed colored vinyl sheeting. Looking to buy some (preferably in a multi-color back of small sheets) for use in making capes for toys, a la classic old-style sofvi capes. Adhesive-backed stuff is easy to come by, but no leads yet on non-adhesive. Please hit me up if you can help... thanks!
Sorry I can't help you out on this one man. Way out of my depth here, being very much an Enjoyer and non-Maker. But I do know that there are - at least what seems to me like - an absolute ton of folks right now doing 'retro' style action figures, a la your typical 3 3/4" Kenner style, a great number of which do have this sort of cloth cape accessory. It tends to be slightly thicker than what I've seen on vintage toys (mainly thinking of the Nakajima wrestlers and some bootlegs) and I don't know what the supply comes with in terms of backing. But might be worth a random message to one of these guys, or maybe some of the peeps from S7 can chime in on their experience with ReAction manufacturing (though this is more large scale and direct than you are looking for I am sure). Anyways, I am sure you don't need it, but happy to share a bump in some of those directions to see where it leads.
Whenever I've made replacement capes for Star Wars figures I've cut up inflatable beach balls and pool toys.
I don't know if you need flat sheets for specific machining/cutting, but if you're hand-trimming—would repurposing beach balls be an option? Ye olde Amazon has a lot of multi-colored, multi-pack options for cheap-ish (although they might show up crinkled). edit: jinx
Love the beach ball suggestion... might be a great way to do it on the cheap, and also inject chance into the process, in terms of colors, patterns, etc.
Ooh. Even better, carve this fucker up. https://www.farfetch.com/shopping/men/supreme-beach-ball-item-14284761.aspx
https://instagram.com/kerf_loss?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== John Andersen has been researching and reproducing the kenner style wax and techniques for a minute. I have no doubt he could drop some knowledge on what the old figures used and where you might find something comparable.
