Totally agree that art does not need to have meaning, just commenting om the above statement about the "meaning" behind English's work.

I also think having the same toy in endless color variations is tiresome. For the most part, I only buy one of any sculpt.

I followed you, I was just agreeing and digressing :D

EDIT: except for endless color variations of the the same sculpt. It is total insanity, but I quite enjoy it for certain sculpts. I have no justification for it. None needed!

I was referring to the collectors, not the creators. SB collectors long had a moral superiority over KR collectors. I think once SB flipped from being a Japanese toy board to a Japanese-inspired toy board, we lost our moral superiority. That turning point looked like a whole lot of people trying to cash in on the toy craze sweeping the nation.
To your point about the creators - whether something was made by hand with love or by a team in a factory has less bearing on whether something is art than international recognition. By that logic, a macaroni painting made in preschool has more artistic merit than a Jeff Koons (and yes, I'm purposely picking another artist whom I loathe). But I do fully agree that art collecting is rigged and recognition shouldn't define who is and isn't an artist, or what art is and isn't, or even the value of art.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I find the "meanings" attached to artworks to often be so full of shit, and probably made up after the fact because the gallerists require artists to come up with an artist's statement to help the viewer "understand" the work. Pfff!
I collect things purely for their aesthetics. I don't want something hanging on my wall telling me about all the atrocities going on in the world (unless it looks really cool!).

Interesting . . . that's all part of charm and what attracts me to collecting (maybe it's just a Basehead thing) . . . the diversity created by colour and vinyl permutations. If we're drifting into the 'Art' discussion (before it degrades into a meltdown), I kinda align it with Warhol's appreciation for process generated variation.

Conversely, most cabinets full of random toys don't float my boat and I have little interest in manga/anime/vintage movie inspired toys.

    Tomato, tomato! :D

I’m in the same boat, I get fixated on my favorite sculpts and add them to the collection ad nauseum. I also find extensive collections of one maker or even one sculpt more interesting than the hodge podge, although that has its place as well for aesthetics and variety.

I’m with @Michael Beverage and @Anti Social Andy on this one. When a sculpt/artist is strong enough, to me, I love having multiples in different variations/versions/colors. I have multiples of Cinema Monster, Obake Dog, SB and Ggml fighters, BxH, Headlock Studio; basically enough multiples of various artists that I could either align them all together, or separate throughout and have both the unified and the hodge podge look.

In direct reference to the thread, I’m pretty tired of seein’ a lot of gorilla and robot toys. Not because I inherently dislike them, but they’re all getting far too derivative of each other.

@Anti Social Andy Dude, that’s the worst and most painful part about it. It’s basically the thought process of, “Well, it worked for Hirota, and for that guy, and for that guy, and for that guy. Maybe I should try everything they did!”

There’s definitely some pretty rad robots out at the moment, I just don’t collect ‘em so I can’t exactly say the artists.

The Japanese toy 'scene' is a shitshow these days.

So much landfill, so many asshats overpaying, secondary market and manufacturers chasing the Chinese cashcow! Blech!

It sucked bad enough enough when the likes of Coop, Kozik and Mishka hopped on the bandwagon, but that seems like good-times in contrast to what's happening these days!

@Anti Social Andy Unfortunately for me, and maybe not because of my freshness in toys, I was more than likely still collecting Western Kozik and the like during that time. But I’d definitely say the hobby, scene and overall community is in a pretty bizarre spot from when I first really dove in compared to now.

I’d love to know what goes through people’s heads when they see a certain artist or toy garnish any sort of success and think to themselves, “I’m gonna be the next *that*.” I get drawing influences; Joe, Paul and Spectrum Lab have been great continuing and recent examples of this. But to just straight up copy as your first offering into toys is so weird. Even Target Earth had much more tact, personality, and dare I say purpose when he released his versions.

Well 90% of his work stems off the idea of unmasking the reality of corporations who offer unhealthy product to make a quick dollar. All started with those epic Cigarette billboard takeovers back in like the 80s - the fatness, skeletons, etc are just an extension of that. I think Ron is one of the only few artists who's toys makes sense with the messages he's trying to portray.. His pieces were all stand alones in the designer toy world, up until about 4 years ago - now the market is pure saturation, and everyone is just copying everyone. It's fucked really

If the Mecha Kelly Kapowski was lifesize and anatomically correct, I’d throw 5k on the barrel head RIGHT NOW

I just think there is an inherent disconnect here....Ron has literally pumped out tens of thousands of plastic toys that look the same, most sold at a premium, with the message that corporations sell us unhealthy products? Does anyone see the irony? An inside joke possibly?

Yeaaaah....lame and shallow message turned into a cash-in.

Thanks for raising "awareness" Ron!
