Took the plunge and checked out TPM3D last night. Surprised that the theater was only about half-full. Nobody in costume, no lightsabres, no cheering, and a generally emotionless "dead" response to the film. Not surprised that all the kids in the audience were boys. Pros: Seeing the film on the big screen again. Realizing that the second half of the film doesn't suck if you ignore Anakin and Jar-Jar. Remembering that Darth Maul is unbelievably cool and the most awesome fighter in any of the films. Also the realization of how far Natalie Portman has come as an actress since Amidala. Cons: Everything wrong with retrofitted 3D is wrong with this revamp in a big way. The image is darkened approx. 30-40% by the glasses and also badly desaturated. This is a real shame because the movie is generally very colorful and bright. Every time I checked the image without the glasses, I wished it had been a 2D re-release instead. The "billboarding" effect is horrendous. That's the appearance of several layers of flat items as opposed to the superior 3D effect that occurs when movies are actually shot with two calibrated lenses (as with "Avatar" or "Hugo.") Some scenes didn't even appear in 3D at all. The pod race, space battles, Coruscant air traffic ... none of this was improved by 3D. In fact the only depth effects that impressed me had to do with relatively inconsequential things such as Maul's probes flying around. There was some pretty extreme exaggeration in some cases ... e.g. Darth Sidious' cowl stuck way too far out, some characters' facial features looked weirdly distorted and then went back to looking flat again. Sorry to say it was the worst example of contemporary 3D I've ever seen, which really surprised me given Lucasfilms' resources. Not sure I'll bother the other prequels in 3D when they come out.
In real Star Wars news, I just went to the local show and scooped up the '86 POTF Barada and Imperial Dignitary loose for a paltry $10. Mid-West Sniper Posse enda Hayows!
Even if you guys don't read french, this is so very stupid & funny, you should check this out. http://www.yodablog.net/ There are a few worldless strips in there but I thought they were too vulgar for here.
I love Star Wars but yes I am really burned out on it now... It just seems to be REALLY over played lately.
lucas is bat shit crazy and a marketing genius the damn clone wars has made a gold mine out of marketing the clones as characters and totally making them likable which is dumb since THEY KILL THE JEDIS!! this whole thing is a joke i just wish they would have made episodes 7-9 instead with jace and jania as jedi fighting each other int he third one to the death... epic
Star Wars haters watch this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGE0q_bQN4M watch the exclusive scene at 2:05...
This guy definitely does not share Roberts opinion, IMO Best Loose collection to date. 2 Of my favorite close up shots. All them Jawa's Luke in the hyperbaric chamber... If you have the bandwidth, check out this link at rebelscum, for some really cool detail shots. http://forum.rebelscum.com/t951835/#post15946594
That is a whole lot of Star Wars to be sure. Guess I am being picky (or age-biased) but as impressive as that is, it just doesn't do much for me, and I am a huge SW fan. Way too much of prequel and Clone Wars content for my liking [which probably amounts to any ], and not a single nod to any vintage pieces. Then again, I never understood the whole army-building mentality. Can't fault him for being dedicated though.
To be fair, the guy's collection runs the gamut from every possible movie, but I will say I appreciate the old figures a heck of a lot more than the new stuff. I think the less articulation and the less detail on sculpts (Specifically SW) the better, but that's just my opinion. Army building is boring, but when it's all put together, it looks damn impressive.
Totally sick of star wars. Do you all know that Darth Maul actually survived, got fused to a spider body and lost his mind? Now he's back with robotic legs and wants revenge. LAME.
That story's been around a while in the comics. Old news. They only just busted it into the Clone Wars cartoon I guess. I hate the EU almost more than I hate Ep I-III.
See. I'm so sick of star wars I didn't know that. I learned about it from the clone wars cartoon. I don't usually watch it but I see commercials for it during other shows my kid watches.
still have plenty of love for the old Kenner line but still enjoy what Medicom is doing with its Kubrick version
Wait what? You lost me. She was great in The Professional/Heat. But you can't blame her for her stilted dialogue. Every character in TPM was generic and boring. Ewan seemed like he tried but there is no redeeming quality in that movie.
Darth Maul is so dated looking too. So 1999 Nu Metal with the tribal face paint. He should've fronted Coal Chamber or something. Guh. The 1 redeeming quality is watching every one cringe at Jar Jar, but that's more my sick satisfaction of watching others being uncomfortable more so than Lucas doing a damn thing.
Ha ha! Wow. I just don't even get how he put that look together. Aside from the hair / make-up just looking absolutely STUPID, how does he figure to pair it with a windbreaker and track pants (?). And a Flying V? I mean, I know the V has been used by plenty of DBs, but...
