I was just looking around, and I have not seen this show mentioned on any of the forums I frequent besides this one, and haven't come across any photos from people who attended. I'm assuming people recovering from last night will get shots up today...

TAG show was a lot of fun last night. Looked to be a pretty good turn out. Cool to see a few LASK people show up.

Congrats to the 1,2,3 place winners , And thank you to the judges for picking Gummi Larry for an Honorable Mention ribbon!

Cool to hear that the show was good and that there were legit awards and stuff. Did anyone at the show mention where that coverage would end up?

I wasn't really into the judging aspects. I feel like the Skullbrain crowd kind of values different aesthetics in their toys than Jeremyriad or ToyBreak or the other judges, and we're all entitled to our opinions. But at the end of the day that's all it is- an individuals opinion and preference. And putting a few individuals preferences above all other resin makers, bloggers, and toy fans who came to see the show, just didn't really do much for me.

Anyway GUF, Larry is awesome, better than an honorable mention in my book.

I think Arbito and PK were the winners.

Yeah - glad to hear I wasn't the only one that was a bit cissapointed by the photography of the pieces (on the TAG site)... Oh, well.

So, PK has a couple pics up on his Flickr - just saw those. But I haven't seen any good pictures of the whole 'spread'... Anyone else attend?

So, now that a few posts of coverage up, something's been raised on Twitter and I'm curious to hear what the SBers that entered thought. All of the coverage so far has focused on the judging aspect and those that won, including to the point of Jeremyirad saying that having a contest show is 'finally' a reason to do resin. I know Joe mentioned not being impressed by the judging idea, and I have to admit I didn't really pick up on the judging part until well after I was underway with my figures. I'm effectively being told on Twitter that I'm 'doing it wrong' by not being totally focused in winning a prize. Just wondering if other SBers were that concerned with the idea.

That said, this article was posted, and I do mostly agree with it:

I'm LOLing everywhere. I was excited to be in this show, I wish there were more resin shows for us to show our work, but I wasn't aware that art has become a competition. SpankyStokes stated some of the work shouldn't have even been entered. Did I make the shit list? I hope so!

HA! Funny! Well I know it's all opinion based, and the 'judging thing' seemed odd to begin with... I second thsat I was happy to be in the show, but who is ANYONE to put together any sort of 'shit list' - Hell - the 'shit-listers' could be like the 'resin hipsters' or something!

Just sticking up for my toy making friends. I should shut my mouth, but no one should be discouraged from making what they want!

I didn't really care about the competition aspect of the show. If it bothered me, I wouldn't have entered.

Every time you put a toy (resin/custom/whatever) in a show or post a picture of it on the internet, it's gonna be judged by somebody.

Absolutely. And my point was not at all that people who make objectively weak things shouldn't hear about it. My confusion was that all of the coverage I was seeing made it sound like the only reason I should be pouring resin is to win a gold star.

Why even pay attention to the coverage then. I know I don't follow ANYONE on twitter or let any media outlet influence my thoughts or what I should be doing. Just make toys because you want to. Make 'em the way you want them to be. Larry is for sure the furthest thing from kaiju or other things here on SB, and I know there's people who don't like him, but hopefully people can see that we just love toys and have passion for it!! So keep doing it, and not worry about other people and what's being said on twitter or who got what. Because..... none of that matters really, only hard work!!!!

MILTRON, you are, of course, completely right. I follow some of those guys on Twitter mostly out of morbid curiosity, but the post-mortem on this show still seemed odd to me. Like you said, though, Larry isn't for me as a design, not being a tattoo guy myself, but you can't look at Larry and not see the perfect finish and know that's a result of major love and effort. You guys should definitely be proud.

hmmm, just read that toypinionated article. some good points, but why complain about a show that is based on an "Open Call"? They did that because they wanted more resin artists. I'm glad they did because more than half of these guys, i've never heard of or seen their work. Abell's BarkinGun? Fucking genious. I bought it. Imagination Asylum Titan? bought that too. So that part is good.

but with good, comes bad. The flip side of an Open Call is that yes, you will get shit. That's part of the deal.

    Like Milton Said.

I don't really care that I placed in anything.
I think hanging out with everyone, giving advice and helping folks out with techniques and materials and dispelling "material myth" to help make them better was way more rewarding to me.
I believe that trumps any BS.
Plus I had a GREAT time with Guf and Milton on the road even stuck in shitty LA traffic. Those dudes are soul.

Thanks Mr.P5!!! It was nice to see your stuff in person.... and everyone else's!!!
It was just starting to sound like people were getting discouraged, and feel the need to change their style to fit other's likes. I know I read stuff outta the same curiousity and get pissed off because it is totally not what I'm about. And I'm sure you know complaining about whatever doesn't solve anything because they got their opinion.

But yeah, you know......blah blah blah.....

And it was nice meeting some of the LASK!!!! Looking forward to hanging out again!!!!

oh and I think it's completely fine to enter any show just to enter without any expectations to win or even sell your piece. Just the thrill of being in a show is reward enough.

Everything I do is just to gain approval.

I don't want to be negative on anyone's work but from the people I know from the board, everything looked amazing. Glad to see 2 of the 4 'awards' go to people who are active. Just in the technical aspect I think Paul's Jinx should be 1 and 2. I like sucklord as much as the next guy, but the cars did nothing for me.
