It's very sad to hear Frank Kozik passed away. He was one of the first artists to get me interested in art toys.
I endlessly watched his sensational interviews for "Toypunks" and "Toys Are Us: A Revolution In Plastic" documentaries on DVD.
Thank you for your badass art, Mr. Kozik!

Thank you for sharing it out so we could read it. I thought it was a fitting tribute and I really feel for his wife Sharon when she talks about their time together.

Also, I recommend avoiding the comments on the article, they're mostly stupid but one person who is putting together a documentary on The Butthole Surfers put up a short interview he did with Kozik earlier this year:

It's been awhile since I posted on Skullbrain but just wanted to chime in on this little thing I wrote about Frank.
    -----

I first met Frank Kozik in December 2007 right after moving to San Francisco to work for Super7. We had been communicating before I moved there and he had invited me over to his studio to check it out and pick up a toy I had bought from him. He rented the 2nd floor of a HA chopper shop at the corner of 11th and Howard st. After getting buzzed in by a very reasonable man with a 3 piece patch on, I walked up the steps to his space. Windows ran the length of his entire studio. It was full of art, toys and all sorts of weird shit I loved. A large drawing table, flat files and a computer sat in the middle of the space. Frank was watching My Neighbor Totoro when I walked in. He scrambled quickly to shut it off like he had been caught watching something bad. Personally, I don't think he wanted people to know he was into something so sentimental. He then gave me a small tour while simultaneously not really saying anything. He was always very gruff and grumpy but simultaneously kind. From that day forward, whether Frank liked it or not, I tried to bring visiting friends to Kozik's studio to shoot the shit. He would sit and tell stories about Japan, the Austin punk scene in the 80s, Man's Ruin Records, the rock poster scene and of course the business of vinyl toys. I had been collecting his art since the 90s but I of course never told him that.

One of my favorite memories is when Frank invited Josh H and myself over the use his airbrush set up to paint toys and just fuck around. "Uncle Frank", as we liked to call him, showed us how to properly use an airbrush and waxed poetic about our shared interests. Frank had a lot to say about punk, toys, our jobs at Super7 and the toy world. I would continue to visit him and his wife Sharon until I moved back to Virginia in 2016. Frank was a true enigmatic character and was always unpredictable. RIP
