I've seen pics of the toys on here but I have no idea how hard to find or pricey they are, if anybody has any info please let me know.

    Thanks!

I know that Marmit made two color versions of their Pulgasari figure. That was about ten years ago. Are there any Korean toys of it, though?

Yeah, those are the Marmits, and being early Marmits, the quality is shit. Be forewarned...

    PULGASARI!!
Well I was going to wait till I received these to post my pics of them but here is a huge and mini Pulgasari set I have on the way. These are made in Japan but I don't know who made them nor when they were made.
They have markings on the feet and I'll take pics when I receive them and see if someone can help figure out who the manufacturer is. Apparently Kim Jong-il's father was a Kaiju freak and made the Pulgasari movie with the help of Toho. It's all a crazy story....you can read more below. The sculpt on this looks pretty incredible.

I thought the director was abducted?

That massive orange one is really nice.

Yeah the origins of it are crazy, I've been wanting to see it for ever but I could never find it for rental so I just bit the bullet and watched it here the other day...

I love it, it's so awesome that he comes to life after being sculpted by dirt and rice!

It looks like that huge one there might be based on when they try to burn him alive but it just heats him red hot because he's Iron!

Thanks for posting, those look awesome.

Yeah, the director Shin Sang-ok and his wife Choi (actress in the movie) were kidnapped from South Korea but later escaped. I alwways thought the making of the movie itself should be a movie.

I talked with Jim C. from Club Daikaiju about this tonight.

He said that in addition to the Marmit (offered in two colors), there was a "realistic" sculpt that was sold as a theater premium. He didn't remember the manufacturer, but from his description, it seems to be the one onibaba posted.

Unless, of course, there's a _third_ figure out there...

I never heard the stories when he was our guest at AFFE, but Jim told me that effects director Teruyoshi Nakano worked on Pulgasari (willingly, not as a hostage) and said it was insane. When his crew arrived at the studio in Korea, they found workers frantically constructing the set for the day's shooting. When they were done, the workers put down their tools and let him know they were also the actors!

Hey Roger, there also seems to be a 3rd red version of the Marmit sculpt, which I just saw here...

    http://www.clubtokyo.org/listings/itemL ... entID=1619

I like the red one the best. I wonder if there was also a painted version of the mini Pulgasari sculpt that Onibaba was getting?

I also read that a ton of the actors in the movie were actually from the Korean People's Army.

Jim looked at the pictures here and says:

Yes, those are the realistic vinyls that were released, though I don't recognize or recall the manufacturer's name. There was also a red variation.

Now I remember that the gold Marmit figures were sold in the Tokyo theater that screened Pulgasari at the same time as Godzilla '98. The red and black vinyl versions were released later that same year.

Great info Roger, thanks. When I get them I'll be sure to post pics of whatever manufacturers marks are on the feet. I wonder if Bandai was involved since that distribution channel has been something they've been pretty good at.

Yeah, back in the 80s Bandai was doing some odd theater exclusives like that mammoth and the cavemen.

This will help, the katakana for "Pulgasari": プルガサリ

Ah, just found this old auction:

    Made by... "Water Bull"?!?

I agree. I wish there was a "making of" documentary.

You couldn't make up a story like that.

Oh, I gotta disagree on these Pulgasari's, Rog. Granted, some of the early Marmit Vinyl Paradise figures, especially from '96 & '97 were lackluster in terms of paint and thin vinyl. But the Pulgasari's however were from 1998 (VP-68 in the series) and were molded with nice thick vinyl with glossy surfaces comparable to M-1's and very distinctive paint designs..

The Red and Black ones shown on ClubTokyo are the ones in my collection as well as the Gold one shown below.

Wrote some about the figure in my blog... but I'm wondering if anyone knows of other versions of Pulgasari besides the Marmits?? I accidentally posted in Count's wanted thread where there was discussion of a giant version.

Anyone ever find one??? Onibaba5, you got one didn't you???
