QHAL/DÜLTAAN Galactic Penitentiary Escapee I had a pro photog friend come over and take a great series of shots last night… these are not those pics… these were just snapped on my workbench, and are presented here pretty much straight out the camera. So honored to have been included in the show… thanks to TAG and to Mr. C. Little in particular ! It was a blast to do this piece, and I’m pleased with how it came out. I was very much thinking about 70s sci-fi paperback novel covers and the character designs of Alex Toth as I worked on this. Of course, as ever, big thanks to Paul, for sharing the lurid flowers of his imagination with the world… long may he continue to do so! Hope some of you get to check him out in person this weekend!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Dude this is KILLER! Great work. I wanna see this on the cover of a 70's Scifi book. Super vintage feel, love it.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show soo many great things about this Mike. I love what you did with the green area especially. And the glass eye you used is really cool. Great Job!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show I like that you went with flesh tone color, everything really pops! The color that you chose for the teeth looks like it glows in the light. Everything looks amazing, great job!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Totally makes me really see the sculpt - beautiful work, Mitch!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Thank you very much for all the positive comments, guys! Very much appreciated! I put my all into this one, for sure, and for the slow way in which I work, the timeline was very tight. Throw in traveling to NJ for my sis' wedding, getting ready to move to a new home, and all the usual life busy-ness, and I needed to use basically every spare moment on him, even when I totally did not feel like getting into it... rather insane-making! There are a lot of hidden reflective effects not coming through so well in these shots; hopefully my friend's series captured them better. The cracks on the legs and arms were painted with a reflective mauvurple color that's pretty cool; the fin has some blue metallic mixed in; the teeth were washed with a reflective sage green at the tips; and the gauntlets/veins/belt details/hair all have metallic effects to varying degrees, too. Painting it did the exact same for me, David! I really wanted to honor/complement/bring out the best in this fantastic, involved sculpt... there's just so much to it, and so much I didn't even realize was there until I started working it! It's one of those great examples of a creature design that is basically, powerfully symmetrical, but with just the right amount of kink and quirk worked into the details to throw that symmetricality a bit and make it seem organic and "real". I've fallen deeply in love with this sculpt through the customizing process.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show My god mike.....you really need to start doing more customs. This is amazingly clean, and the colors are great. Fantastic work.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Been so busy, but really loving everyones work! Here's one of mine... Unfortunately Kaiser had a bad time with fungal spores and needs to sleep it off for a few decades.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show I can only imagine the amount of work you put into this, so hard to focus on every single detail in it.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show HA... probably one of the most mindblowingly great thread-bumps a guy could get around here... Paul, this one... so deeply amazing. I want to make a GIF of myself taking my hat off to you endlessly. And if I wore a hat, I would do it. PAINED I am to not be able to see this one in person!!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show The art of turning the obnoxious over reactions of the immune system into something beautiful. This show is really bringing a lot of awesome into the world.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Thanks all, and sorry to Mike for not intentionally hijacking his thread. His piece is really beautiful. Reminds me of a Matt Mason alien that never existed. For some reason I thought this was meant to be where all the Kaisers went. This was a lot of fun to do. I needed some warm up for future diorama projects. Unfortunately it seems like a dying art. On our way to LA traffic time vortex for the opening. See you all there!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Loving your kaiser mike! Yours stuck out majorly when I saw it on Instagram. It the one I would have go for if I was there at the show. Soo good.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Don't sweat it for a moment, Paul! And Thanks for the kind words on the Kaiser- yes, dig your Matt Mason connection! WOW- thank you very much, Phil! Dude, yours was one I hadn't seen before John's pics went up last night. There were a couple pieces that were on his Instagram but not on his Flickr, where I first looked, and I believe yours was one. When I spotted it, I was like "OOOH! Whose is that?! NICE!" I always love your color choices- consistently tasty and expertly applied! Love the way you handled the head, and the fades on the eyes are gorgeous. Your stuff is always so well tied together- never a color in the mix that doesn't work really well with the rest of the piece.
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show All of those customs are so great! Saw a bunch of pictures HERE Im really glad I got one of those metal mockbats!
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Today, but I was lucky enough to get one from the show from someone that lives in the area. :3
Re: Pollen Kaiser for TAG Anniversary show Finally got the pro snaps back... very happy with 'em. If any Dropbox users would like to have a look at the whole folder of turnarounds, send a PM and I'll share it with you. Thanks for lookin'!
