@Lttr Prssd - I'll probably be having a look at the first and last episode again, so mostly I'll have to get back to you, but... Spoiler I found myself distracted as the run was coming to a close, say starting in episode 8, that they might drag the story into a second season. I don't need my resolutions pat and concrete - or delivered quickly, for that matter - but it seemed to me the tale, loop-based as it was, kinda demanded that the circle be closed to a great degree by the final minutes. My worst fears weren't confirmed, but my internal jury is still out as to whether or not they fully stuck the landing. Sounds like, from your brief comment, that I walked away at least a little bit more satisfied than you did, though. I will say, as a complaint - and keeping within the theme of distraction - that a certain run of VFX during the ribbon tying sequences were damn near unforgivably lame. I 'got' what they were showing me, but the execution erased my emersion like a family pet surprising you with a lick to your balls in the middle of consensual relations with your significant other.
Holy shit dude, that show is AMAZING! I burned through about 5 or 6 episodes this week. I love the main character's conversations with the Co-Ed killer.. Dude is so nonchalant about killing those chicks..
Sadly one of my favorite things Charlie Brooker's annual Wipe was cancelled for 2017, BUT 6 new episodes of Black Mirror come to Netflix on Friday! Something to watch in my chemo'd out state this Friday.
Finished the entire TURN series on the 'Flix a few weeks ago. If you're into history, specifically the American Revolution, I highly recommend this show. Not once did I get bored or go cold turkey on it. It makes me wish I had a couple grand and more time to use towards historical reenacting again.
Just finished Wormwood, which unfortunately (because the story needs to be told and I consider Mr. Death to be one of the greatest documentaries ever) is borderline unwatchable, thanks to some of the worst editing I've ever seen and tons of exceptionally shitty re-enactments that are absolutely fucking pointless. If you're familiar with the story, just watch the last episode for the Sy Hersh interview. I think the CIA may have replaced Morris with a clone of Terrence Malick...
You'd be missing out then, fer sure! Satire this loving, thorough and expansive is a rare thing. If you'd have told me that you could milk this joke for four engaging and ever-surprising hours before I'd sat down with 'em I'd have had trouble suppressing the suspicious stick-eye, and yet... Pschhhhhhh, pshhhhhhhh. Dick.
2 eps in, eh? Hmmmmm.... Spoiler How you could witness a multi-angle computer-generated hand-job reenactment and not go all in I'll never understand!
So bummed to hear this. I only got halfway through the first ep, felt so tired that night I just couldn't go on... but I may not pick it up again now, as you are the second person I know to basically say the same thing. Shame, I was so excited for this one- I'm not the biggest Morris fan, but the story of Frank Olson has fascinated me since I was a teen, and yes, definitely one that deserves to be told, and told well.
Dearest Mitch - I'm only one installment deep, but I'm inclined to suggest that you set aside our esteemed colleague's impression of Mr. Morris' latest effort and decide for yourself how you like the approach.
@ungawa222 Just ffwd through the "re-enactments" (e.g. Saarsgard fighting off trenchcoat-clad sinister old killer CIA goons with a lamp, minutes after Sy Hersh explains that there is no such thing as trenchcoat-clad sinister old killer CIA goons). No mention of Porton Down, Pont-Saint-Esprit or Camp King..? That final Hersh interview is chilling, though - "There was a procedure."
Dearest Mitch - I'm only two installments deep, but I'm inclined to suggest that you set aside our esteemed colleague's impression of Mr. Morris' latest effort and decide for yourself how you like the approach. EDIT: Three now. Same sentiment. Also, don't skip the end credits; the song choices are satisfyingly on point.
The Toys That Made Us is a great 8 part documentary about the toys that we grew up with in the 80’s. So far, they’ve covered Star Wars, Barbie, GI Joe and Masters of the Universe. So far, I ‘ve watched Star Wars, GI Joe and MOTU (which Brian Flynn made an appearance in). My fiancé wants to watch the Barbie one which I’m sure will be interesting but not really my thing. Anyone know when Netflix is releasing the other 4 episodes?
Everyone keeps talking about Mindhunter, but I'm hesitant to watch it because I read the book... plus apparently the author (too lazy to check but I'm pretty sure it was Douglas? One of the FBI profiling "greats") is unhappy with it as an adaptation, especially with what is supposed to be his character. I guess I should probably just watch it for myself, but when you've read the stuff straight from the "autobiography" of sorts and know all the cases, it's a little infuriating to see any embellishments added for entertainment purposes. Also I'm not sure if it's available on Hulu yet, but I'm sure it will be... Village of the Damned is a multi-part documentary series that aired on Investigation Discovery documenting 10 years of crime and tragedy that befell one small New York town called Dryden. I had my doubts at first because it's such a "sensational" name for a series, kind of like television clickbait, but it's actually done very well. It's respectful to the survivors and residents, whom are interviewed and guide the stories. The victims are all humanized as well. Just overall a very fascinating series about a town that many came to think was cursed.
I've been watching Gomorra the tv series. Never saw the film but always meant to. Season 1 is brilliant, season 2 is a little disappointing with going in ridiculous circles all the time. Decent show though about the Neopolitan mob where someone is dying or betrayed every epsisode (and I'm not into mafia shows).
^ Loved the film, caught it a couple of time in the theatre, but managed not to know until now that a series based on it had been produced. I'll have to take a look, thanks! What's on my mind tonight, though... Macon Blair! A true American hero. Shaves the cynicism off like peach fuzz.
