Just watched the first episode of DEVILMAN Crybaby.:shock::shock:

Fun stuff, although I probably shouldn't have watched it on the living room with the wife around. My last exposure to any Devilman media was the Cyborg 009 vs Devilman movie. Prior to that was the Devillady anime in the late 90's /early 00's. Both pale in comparison to Crybaby. WOW!

That being said, I look forward to watching the series.....on my phone with headphones.

    Altered Carbon.
So far just watched the first two episodes. I haven't read the book, but I have to imagine it's much better than the show. I love sci-fi, but through two episodes I've been extremely bored. The dialog is just a mess. I'll stick it out, because sci-fi. But I'm not expecting much from it.
It's a shame that The Expanse doesn't have the budget and production values that Altered Carbon has.

I finished watching it last night, and today i just feel kind of stupid and gross. The only character I felt like rooting for was the hotel.

@---NT--- @blakewest thanks for the thoughts on Altered Carbon. My sis keeps trying to get me to watch and I'm stalling because I feel it would be just "ehhhh"

Anyone watch the latest Cloverfield Paradox on Netflix? Not as horrible as online reviews made it out to be but not that great either. I was entertained as I had zero expectations after hearing it sucked online. Certainly not as good as the original and the tie in to it was weak.

It was kind of a mess, but I enjoyed it for the most part. The tie-ins were completely heavy-handed and a bit too on the nose. Especially Donal Logue's character predicting exactly what would happen, which makes these different films all "possible." Haven't seen anyone mention his connection to 10 Cloverfield Lane yet, but I'm sure it will end up in the IMDb Trivia section soon.

@blakewest - Yeah, the hotel AI is the only interesting part of the show so far. Disappointing, but not surprising, that the show doesn't get any better. Oh well, after I'm done I'll move on to Expanse season 2 - despite the shitty production values and casting it's pretty fun.

I hated Cloverfield, loved 10 Cloverfield Lane, and expect Cloverfield Paradox to fall somewhere between the two. I can tell you I probably wouldn't even watch it if it weren't for 10 Cloverfield Lane.

I watched all three Cloverfields yesterday and 10 is my favorite as well. The connection, or lack-thereof, between it and the others has no bearing for me. I like me some MEW and enjoy the heck out of the film's claustrophobia and paranoia. The last 20 or so minutes gets a bit ridiculous, but hey, it's just MEW by herself so I give it a pass. I hadn't actually watched the first one all the way through in one sitting before and now I know why. It's okay, but found footage is my least favorite sub-genre. DROP THE CAMERA TJ!

Halfway through. The hotel is an awesome character. The main lead is too much of a cliche to have any impact at all. The lead detective woman is too much of an asshole for me to care about in any possible way. They did a great job on the battle effects and with copying the Blade Runner city feel which is beautifully closed in between thousand story buildings and perfectly grimy but with all the bright buzz of constant ads and robots and sex.

Basically shitty casting ruined what otherwise could have been pretty great.

Makes no sense to create an Event Horizon sequel and say it's Cloverfield part 3.

I'm in that club, too. Your post prompted me to check and see if the world would be graced with a second season of the objectively-terrible-yet-somehow-compelling BrainDead. Nope!

Seems Netflix is a straight up wasteland when it comes to MEW content. Only that 'merican remake show whose existence I refuse to acknowledge.

Wait, she was on The Returned? How did I miss that? I don't even remember if I watched that show now. Was there another show about dead people coming back?

I wanted to like BrainDead so much but didn't make it past the first episode.

Anyway, for me she was the best part of the last season of Fargo.

Watched The Cloverfield Paradox. It was okay. Rather generic for a space station type film, but I still enjoyed it. I wouldn't heavily recommend it, but it wasn't a full waste of time.

    Cloverfield Discussion:
The tie-in to the Cloverfield franchise was definitely shoe-horned though and obviously not subtle. It also doesn't cleanly explain the origin of the first movie's monster, since the two Earths referenced in this flick did not have a monster destroy NYC prior to 2028...or they just ignore that "history". *shrugs*

I've been a big The Soup fan since I was a kid, so I was pretty excited to see that it has been revived in the form of The Joel McHale show with Joel McHale. I didn't know what it was gonna be when I turned it on last night, but quickly realized that it's the exact same format as the E! show except with better writers and producers.

^ Ha, was just checking it out when I hit pause to check SB. I'm with you, Brent; snark is alive and well and living on Netflix.

PS, unrelated: New Chris Rock? I'm in!

The explanation, which is mostly given by Donal Logue's character, is that by using the particle accelerator they may open a rift in space and time and monsters or demons can appear in multiple universes at any time. So the incident creates the monster in Cloverfield in that universe, which is in the past and not connected to the universe of Paradox, and in 10 Cloverfield Lane--which may or may not be in the same universe as the first movie since the monsters are different. In other words it's a cheap way to tie the films together by using the multiverse eplanation.

    I know but still....meh.

I want a movie that makes a dimensional rift and we end up getting another Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The next dimension over is all "animated", but they see us a "3d-rendered". They live in a 2D world but due to quantum mechanics and 11-dimensional equations ...blah blah blah...

Finished Devilman Crybaby over the weekend. That was awesome!!

The show follows the general plot of the original manga, so seeing the events play out in the final episodes wasn't surprising as far as what happened, but just actually seeing it was intense and crazy none the less.

    Random highlights:
    - Episode 8 - Miki's father breaking down after finding his son became a demon and ate his mom. That scene was so heartbreaking and heavy. It wan't just a simple discovery leading to an anguished "NOOOooo". You could see he fell apart and was all over the place. Agony, rage, confusion...I haven't seen a scene like that in anime in a while.
    - Episode 10 - That traitorous Koda's death. Akira tore through him so easily. A fitting, unceremonious death to a backstabber.
    - Episode 1 - The Sabbath scene. Revisited it. Crazy shit.

That's great to hear, I've had it on my list for awhile but thought I might be disappointed.

    *EDIT*
So I watched The Joel McHale show with Joel McHale. last night and it was everything I hoped it would be. Low budget graphics, good humor, cameos, etc. Really he is back doing this show, I hope it continues.

Influenced by the Toys R Us nostalgia talk, I finally started this the other night.
Watched all but MOTU (saving most relevant for last) so far, and very impressed by the production across the board. Clearly a labor of love from the creator and all involved.

    https://www.polygon.com/2018/1/10/1...-date-lego-transformers-star-trek-hello-kitty

    Per the article [1/10/18]:
No release date has been set for the final four episodes, but the team has said on Facebook they should be out sometime in the next four months.

Kinda surprised there hasn't been more chatter about the show here...

Star Trek? WTF, I can't recall ever owing a single one or even seeing one at a store. Also, Hello Kitty is questionable. I was expecting Lego, and Transformers definitely. Was also thinking they might conclude the series with TMNT or Hotwheels.

Same regarding Star Trek. Guessing the Hello Kitty segment was (like Barbie) added to widen the show's demographic, though Cabbage Patch Kids could've worked in that regard.

All said, some light wiki reading helps explain their decision:

"Hello Kitty vinyl coin purse was introduced by Sanrio in March 1975. The character was then brought to the United States in 1976... By 2010, Sanrio had groomed Hello Kitty into a global marketing phenomenon worth $5 billion a year. By 2014, when Hello Kitty was 40 years old, she was worth about $7 billion a year..."

Pretty impressive. Should make for an interesting watch, if solely for the major impact HK had on kawaii culture.
Was hoping for TMNT, but oh well. Looking forward to the Transformers ep (despite Michael Bay's involvement in it).
