netflix is pretty empty for me these days
but seeing the original Transformers cartoons on there led me to pull out the '86 movie and share it with a friend
for anyone who doesn't know if you only watch the first half hour or so you can have a wonderful time

They put up the Devil's Double. A film about being the double for Saddam Hussein's crazy son.

I also noticed the have the Spanish film, the Last Circus is up on instant streaming. That one if filled with dark humor and a lot of violence but it's quite a good story of a sad clown and a happy clown. You won't be disappointed.

    Just started LUTHER.
Pretty solid show. It reminds of when Dexter was good.

Roger Ebert recently recommended "Rampart" (2011) as a streaming view on the basis that it features one of Woody Harrelson's best performances, so I viewed it on Netflix last night. What Ebert didn't say is that it's a very fine performance (among several including others by Ice Cube, Sigorney Weaver and Robin Wright Penn) in a very poor film. I can hardly think of any other mainstream Hollywood movie in the past ten years that was more poorly edited, more aimless and ultimately pointless. While watching, I kept trying to reason that some of the film's flaws were merely aesthetic affectations that weren't quite working, but ... nah ... that's too kind. It's just a meandering mess in which neither the main plot nor the subplots are ever really resolved. At best, the movie works as a character study on the strength of Harrelson's good work, but unfortunately too much about the character is unrealistic for it to even succeed in that way. Oh well ... Ebert didn't lie, he just didn't tell the whole truth.

As an anecdote I followed up by watching the first episode of the "Ken Burns' Jazz" documentary series, which was outstanding. Looking forward to the rest of it.

I think the whole "amazing acting" but poorly-written movie is the new thing.
Its the way I felt about Shame, which I just watched this weekend. Great performance by Fassbender, but movie kind of didn't go anywhere.

...then there's the opposite, where you have a truly great overall film like, say "West Side Story" where the lead performances are totally "meh."

These both sound great, thanks for the recommendations.

This past weekend, my girlfriend and I just sat around and watched tons of horror films and documentaries. Netflix viewing included: Into the Abyss, the Last Word, Cropsey, Trials of Michael Jackson, and Don't be Afraid of the Dark. I recommend all of them, but especially Into the Abyss and Cropsey.

On top of that, I think we watched three or four other movies. Holy crap.

the most recent episode of Locked Up Abroad on the NatGeo channel has Latif's account of being Uday Hussein's body double for anyone that wanted to hear the stories in his own words.

Let me know what you think of them. :o

Thanks for the site link! A friend of mine recommended Sin Nombre but I still haven't gotten around to see it.

I recommend the Brazilian film Elite Squad: Warrior Within (Tropa de Elite 2 – O Inimigo Agora é Outro) but you should watch part 1 (Elite Squad) first. It's a great Action/Drama film about the corruption in the Brazilian police and the measures they have to go to in order to deal with the cartels. Part 2 (Enemy Within) takes place 13 years after the first one and just takes you deeper into the corruption. It also has great acting and every actor returns to reprise their role. I don't think part 1 is on instant streaming but if you can find it you should watch it.

I just watched Conan O'Brien Can't Stop. It follows him after the whole NBC fiasco as he starts up and goes on his comedy tour since he was banned from tv, radio and internet for six months back in 2009/2010.

Pretty good. It's interesting to see the other side of the camera for him.

They actually have Timecrimes on Netflix!

I don't want to ruin the movie but all I will say that it's about a man that was able to go back in time 1 hour. It's quite a clever suspense movie, it even had me laughing at times and reminded me of the Twilight Zone. It's also a Spanish movie so you'll have to deal with the subtitles.

I know this is technically a Netflix thread but for those who have Hulu+, look what Criterion secured rights to...

Might be fun to revisit this classic if you haven't already seen it ten thousand times. Or even if you have.

It's awesome news. I still have that humongous box of a DVD Lynch self released for Eraserhead. If they come out with a bluray of this I'd be thrilled. It also gives me hope that Studio Canal will somehow allow Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire to follow suit with Criterion releases of their own (Studio Canal took all the rights back to their releases through Lionsgate and the results kind of suck).

Universal re released it a few years ago on DVD, through Focus I think... but again, Studio Canal produced most current Lynch movies, so your guess is as good as mine. We all crave some eyebrowless Robert Blake.

Yeah, if I recall correctly, the French release of "Lost Highway" is high-quality. If your player can't handle PAL there are simple programs like VisualHub which can be used to burn NTSC discs from PAL.

Robert Blake's appearance in that movie creeps me out every time.

All new Criterion releases come out on Blu-Ray (although that's not always true of their Eclipse series releases) ... the question is when they'll get around to releasing it on disc. Some of those "unreleased" Criterion titles at Hulu have been there for a long time. It's too bad that Jack Nance (Henry) and Alan Splet (Lynch's brilliant sound technician) aren't still around for new commentary, but perhaps they can at least get Lynch to take a break from talking about transcendental meditation, his swanky Paris nightclub and coffee to revisit "Eraserhead." :D

I have the French MK2. Totally worth it if you can find it, best quality in terms of features and transfer, but it's still a dvd... and talking about dvd's in this era is a sad time.

Other than all things Lynch, I am watching Father Ted on instant. It's a BBC comedy by the guy who made The IT Crowd and Black Books from the 90's that I just must have missed being American. Shit is really funny.
