    Bringing this thread back up.

Since finally getting this little guy about a month ago I can’t help but go over to the display and take him down and admire it again and again. It was originally made just to be a cheap alternative to an actual Optimus Prime, but man is it great. It’s the intersection of two of my favorite things: The Transformers, which I have loved since my childhood and soft vinyl toys which I didn’t discover until my late twenties.

Right now I’m just loving it, the simplicity of paintjob- just two colors silver and metallic blue and only sprayed on the front of the figure. The delicate nature of the sculpt- look at those fragile ears/antennas. Whoever owned this as a kid really took care of it, because they’ve survived 32+ years.

Right now this may be my favorite soft vinyl toy, and I’ve been fortunate to find several personal “grail” items. This just ticks off all the right boxes for me.

So let’s see em- what’s your current favorite toy in your collection?

Current favorite is the Bandai 92 Baragon. I think the color selection is great, especially when it comes to some of the finer details - like the light silver over the face or the subtle contrast of red against orange on the ears. It also looks like a tangerine, and I've always been partial to toys that look like tasty food. It has a great balance of cute, with its goofy face, contrasted with monstrous features like the skin texture & back ridge.

I am working my way up through the Toho timeline, but I haven't quite made it to any Baragon movies yet. The closest thing I have to a nostalgic connection to this guy are twofold: 1.) I grew up playing Pokemon, and the Nidoking/Nidoqueen lines ripped off Baragon. 2.) This toy was produced during my childhood, although I never personally saw it on a shelf.

It's also neat because this is one of those toys that encourages me to dig deeper into the history of the hobby. I never would have guessed this would be one of the earliest members of the Godzilla gang to get a soft vinyl toy, but perusing through the Retro Japanese Toy Ads thread, you see dozens of pics of Baragon & Godzilla (alone, or alongside Ebirah & Mothra).

Very nice! That Baragon sculpt is great. M1 does a version that is identical or at least very similar right? It pops up from time to time and I’m always tempted to grab one. Maybe this year I’ll pull the trigger. But that orange version is just great.

Yep! M1 makes a few two-packs with Frankenstein & Baragon, as well. I still need the Frank. There seem to be several permutations of the Orange/Green colorway. Seems like the original was so iconic that people just love to make tribute colorways on the repros.

Have you seen some of the newer Transformer soft vinyl? Not sure if they'd be your style, but it's one of the only soft vinyl toys you can find in Wal-Mart.

These 2 sets were the debut releases for an event.

I actually do have the newer Optimus and Soundwave from Walmart! I got them to compliment the Prime and the Soundwave by Yutani Shouten. Megatron will be next. I’ve got a small collection of contemporary mass produced “cheap” soft vinyl figures.

Two years on, still Pepy. Sorry to be that guy. If he was easier to come by and I wasn't scared of scuffs, I'd take him everywhere.
