Upgrading bootlegged dvd copies of these movies has been fun. Often, it feels like i'm watching them for the first time because the quality is so much better, or in some cases a decade has passed since my last viewing. Seemed only natural to have a place where we can keep each other informed about new releases, etc.

    Here's what i've acquired so far...most wanted...Ultraman ( ! ), Red Baron

Good stuff! I found Biollante and the Gamera trilogy at a Kmart last year, both were in the five dollar (or less) bin.

I love my karate robo zaborgar bluray. I was also stoked on the price for Daimajin! Always nice adding to the movie library. Totally grabbed those Gamera bluray sets of the early movies because of this thread can't wait for them to show up! :D

Cheers Mikee ! As mentioned above, the best part of these releases is the price. I couldn't wait and bought the Toho 2 movie sets on release day for approx. $14.99, but now most of them are $9.99 or so. Pretty good deal to own a Godzilla classic for $5 a pop :D

These days a five dollar movie is pretty common and I love that Erik! Nothing like the deals lol we have this chain called Hastings in my area and they usually sell rented DVDs for like $3.99 after they no longer rent of the shelves quick... I got my Zaborgar Bluray like that. I also got a ton of horror movies on the cheap with this method. Life is good.

@Bitterpill Erik, I was actually looking at this for some time now, and just happen to see your comment now. I have only heard bad things about the re-release, and subsequently, the first version is ridiculous on the aftermarket. I mean, I get that it might be worse and such, but come one, I am not in any position to drop multiple hundreds of dollars on a shitty pressing of a monster movie, even if I wanted to. :?

OKay, let's be clear, I have a lot of issues with Mill Creek, particularly with respect to what they have done re: tokusatsu DVD releases. Sadly, I also have to admit that for the average person outside of Japan, this might be the only way you can get an 'official' [cough - Chaiyo - cough] release. And then only in R1. :( But, in any case, as this is sort of exciting news, I thought I would share.

The classic Mothra is finally getting a proper blu-ray release [for North America]. Coming from Mill Creek, the movie will be available as a really nice looking steelbook, and feature both US and original Japanese cuts of the film.

I think that is pretty exciting. Pre-orders open now though MC. Hopefully they spent some time getting this transfer right, I am not expecting a Criterion-level remaster (though we can dream!) but at least a properly done, non-discount bin version of some classic kaiju films. We are looong past due.

h/t to dreadcentral for full article on release

Exactly right. Considering that the fondest memories of discovering many kaiju movies for the first time they were on vhs recordings of tv broadcasts, a sub-par blu ray transfer is still a welcome inclusion to the home movie library.

Thanks for the heads up on that Mothra steelbook ! Lovely packaging with both versions of the film together leads me to believe they did actually put some effort and money behind the release. Let's hope.

Decided to change my last post to a separate thread, but would also add here (as discussed in other places) that the amazing and seemingly impressive set of Show-era Godzilla films is still on sale at Barnes & Noble until December, with matching price available on Amazon. So, if you are in the US, there is almost no reason why you would not have already ordered these. Now if only I can get that international payment to somehow work out....

So, for what it is worth, I happened to be alerted to the fact that amazon UK has the Criterion Showa era box set actually on offer for one of its Black Friday specials, for £103.99. This is actually the cheapest I have ever seen it available outside the US, and they have been commanding a lot even on the aftermarket (which is sad for new blurays) so if anyone on here happens to be on the hunt for a R2 set, this might be the occasion.

Thought I would let everyone know, just in case. 11 films of wonder and delight; just sayin'.
