    iTunes 11 question
I'm always slightly annoyed when Apple updates anything because they always have to tweek some feature I like. So I like iTunes 11 BUT has anyone else noticed that when you scroll between playlists the list you were on resets to the top upon returning? It never did that before. I use to be able to go btw my main library and a separate playlist and it would remember where I was. I could be in "S" (I arrange by artist, and never use a grid view) and go say to my DnB playlist and when I return it would be where I left off.

NOW it's always up at the top (in letter A) and I have to scroll down through 10000 tracks just to find that track again. Am I missing something? As far as I can see there is no scroll position lock anywhere in preferences.

Honestly, I've never seen such a badly designed updates. Expanding the window "full view" makes it go beyond the borders of my screen. The shuffle option is all screwed up - you can't start it in all views, and while it's playing, clicking on anything (ctrl-l, like I often do to add ratings or simply see what's playing) will switch the shuffle to that album.

It's terrible, really. Does anyone know of a way to transfer an iTunes library to something else but retain ratings / comments? Are those embedded in the mp3 files?

(none of which is answering your question Chris, but I'd assume it's just another bug)

I'm sure this will quickly devolve to a "What I hate about iTunes 11" thread but while we're complaining I have to say I loathe the 'play next' feature. If my mouse gets anywhere near that part of the field I start to lose it will all the pop ups.

I think if you move the entire library to another location (say an external drive) you will retain all the ID tag info.

banshee- I'm always lurking on apple discussion board, I saw a few threads with people that said they downgraded so I think it is possible. I suspect (or hope) Apple will be coming out with a software update to fix some of the glitches soon.

    iTunes 11 question
I LOATHE iTunes 11 and curse myself for trusting Apple when I upgraded to it. There are too many things wrong with it to list. I had a long talk about this with my buddy at Apple (who is far up in the org and has pull.) He hates it too. He rained holy hell on the top two executives in charge of it. The response was pretty much "you're in a miniscule percentile of users. This was engineered with the majority in mind." This basically means that people like he and I have music libraries that are just too big for iTunes 11 to handle well, and that we are outdated in expecting it to primarily be a music managing app, anyway. I'm still in shock that the majority of reviews of it in the press have been so enthusiastically positive. Heavy-duty users of the program seem to mostly hate the new version.

Not sure I'm a fanboi but I do love my several Apple products. I've never been as pissed about anything they've done before.

Oh how I hate "play next" and the fact that you can't disable it entirely. I miss Cover Flow, miss being able to customize my views without switching between stupid forced "songs" and "albums" sections. I hate the stupid drop-down search thingie and the fact that it takes a looooong time to find what you're working for.
I'd better stop before this becomes a loooooong bitchy rant better posted to the "fuck you" thread. Argh!

Dean I thankfully backed up my os x with time machine at the end of November. So I do have itunes 10.7 sitting on my external. Is there a way to to replace itunes 11 with it? I'd use the method I posted but I'm stilling running Snow Leopard. I'm always the last to upgrade an operating system. I usually trust my gut- if it ain't broke don't fix it!

The masses have always been my nemesis :D !

you can uninstall iTunes and reinstall an earlier version.

It will probably delete all your settings with it, but it might be worth looking into. Im pretty sure the apple forums can provide a very in-depth answer and workaround to that.

iTunes has been integrated into the OS for a couple of versions. Evidently reverting isn't so difficult on Windows machines but unless like Lixx you've backed everything up with Time Machine, it can't really be done on a Mac. Some of the suggestions I've seen out there about how it "should" or "might" work don't work. You get an error message saying that you've already upgraded to a more recent version, and the OS refuses the reversion.

Thing is, if you use Time Machine to revert, you'll have to be really careful from now on because Automatic Updates will want to "upgrade" every time there's an update. Best of luck Lixx ... wish I'd backed up, but I hadn't. Lesson learned.

For all those looking to revert but need iTunes 10.7 dmg, here is a link I found:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/45 ... 0&tstart=0

in Limnos post, second live link.

Here are two methods to revert found here, one using terminal, one using a pacifist program. I've tried neither and might do the terminal one on break from school, or see what Time Machine can do (never used it before but since it's an Apple program probably won't let me revert cleanly back to 10.7):

OMG. Thank you for this thread. I was able to successfully downgrade back to my previous iTunes. 10.7.0.21

Learned my lesson never to just trust apple with updates without looking into it first. Saving the set-up exe and all the instructions that helped me just in case this happens again. :x

For whatever reason terminal did not work for me. I followed the instructions (but obviously missed something) to the letter so I thought and afterwards had everything back to 10.7 BUT with the 42408 error and no access to downloaded shows like Walking Dead etc.

So I ended up having to do a complete restore from a time machine back up three weeks ago which I'm doing now. Sucks.

I guess it might be that bad for you Lixx to change back.

I didn't even care, I have an old ASUS with itunes on it that serves as my main music dump. Im glad I never update that thing, though its not like I listen to a lot of diff music these days.

What an absolute nightmare that was! The thing I love about Macs- how everything is tightly integrated is also the biggest downfall when shit like this goes south. You can't just uninstall. Finally restored my computer to its original state prior to iTunes 11. Lucky for me I backed everything up right before I did this. I had to restore in boot mode using the install dvd/time machine, then once it restored I had to use time machine again to restore individual folders. Then after that I had to re-download the last two episodes of WD but my computer was going super fucking slow, so I left in on for the night.

Wake up and my computer is crawling. So I did a disc utility to repair permission and noticed some crazy decryptfile.dmg mounted on my computer along with flash underneath?! I'm like what the fuck is this and where did it come from? Did it teleport in from the past? Anyhow turns out it might be a flashback virus, so I used my find any file app to isolate it and try to delete. Did not work. Finally had to run my terminal all over again just to zap it. Hopefully my computer is fine. It's running super fast and decryptfile.dmg is gone.

I'm telling you I'm never updating my Mac again! All this just because I updated to iTunes 11! Oh and don't call Apple. All the kept trying to tell me last night was stick with iTunes 11 and how they just did a software update to fix some of the bugs. No fucking thanks I kept saying.

Glad you were finally able to sort that out, Lixx. The update did improve search speed for large libraries and fixed a few other bugs. Grateful for that, but otherwise, it's still iTunes 11.

I'm in the minority here, but I am fine with iTunes 11. I use it in Artists view, and it serves my purposes well. I miss CoverFlow, because I too really like to enjoy the gigantic album art that I've meticulously found for every album in my library, but I'll live.

The one issue I had was that in Artists view, when I started playing a song from an album, it would keep going after the album was done, and start playing songs from the next album. That's not how I like to roll - I like to listen to an album all the way through, and then pick something else, like I'm listening to CD's or LP's. Found the solution though - Hit the play button next to the album name that shows up if you hover your mouse over the album. That will play the whole album and then stop when the album is done. :)

Personally I find my 140GB iTunes library running a lot faster than it ever did in versions of iTunes 10.

Speaking of iTunes, someone gave me an iTunes gift card for $25. If someone here wants the unused code for $20, lemme know, I hate iTunes and refuse to use their service.

Is this a cool place to asking since iTunes is the topic? If not, whatever dudes.

No more coverflow? WTF! I have yet to switch to 11 but seeing as a lot of you are having issues I may just stick with what I have for the time being.

They just released an update. It solved a few of the minor problems. But you know.

EDIT- Actually no, it doesn't seem to have solved anything.

updated today and glad to find so many kindred spirits in this thread. i loved how itunes could pick up where i left off in any folder. the big text is a bit grating for my 30k plus stores and ever growing collection... just gonna try to make the most of it for now.

Not saying I am a fan of the update at all, but I didn't feel like going through the trouble of downgrading, so here is some stuff I did to make it better (mainly just to look kind of like it used to)

Top left icon thingie > Show Menu Bar
    On the Menu Bar:
View > Show Side Bar; Show Status Bar

Also, I don't know if I changed this or not, but the "View" icon on the right hand side is set to "List" for me.
I think this might have been something worse by default.

You can also right click on the song playing at the top middle and "Go to Current Song" which will jump down to whatever is playing in the main list of songs. (this way if you click between playlists you can get back to the song playing, but it is not automatic).
Still mostly sucks, but these changes are helping me at least...

On of the things I actually miss most is the way the cover art used to show up in the bottom left corner, I can't figure out if there is a way to bring that back or not yet...

While we're talking about Apple: I often think about updating to Mountain Lion (I skipped Lion altogether) but whenever I look at the new features I'm not that impressed. I have no desire to turn my iMac into an iOS device. I like that I have to sit at a desk and be deliberate about things. I have an iPad I take to school or on trips. How many people here still run Snow Leopard like me? I read somewhere online Apple is having trouble phasing it out because so many people stubbornly remain attached to it because it was the last Power PC version along with not liking the new iOS gimmicks.

I actually still run my macbook on snow leopard but only because i didn't feel like forking up money for the update seeing as I may end up getting a new mac soon. My brother's runs mountain lion and I honestly prefer it over my version. The whole thing runs a lot smoother imho. I've never had complaints about snow leopard though so that's partly why I keep it.

Well I did the update, but can someone let me know a way to manually add songs from a PC (already authorised with iTunes) to a device without using the sync? I have done all the usual 'manually sync songs' with iTunes, and it recognises that, but I still can't add the new music. I don't have all the mp3s on the computer I am using, so I don't want to erase everything and therefore can't resync. Would love any help here.
