Seems like a new paint company Homebrew paint/dye will be going online very soon. I think a few of you guys on the board might have already tried the paint. If you've tested it on vinyl how would you compare it to V-color or Monster Kolor?
I have been testing the paint. Works awesome straight out of the bottle into the brush. Painting resin at the moment and it adheres very well straight on the resin. Going to be painting up some vinyl soon and will give some feedback. Also from my understanding this paint will be very reasonable in pricing and also doubles as a resin dye.
It adheres very well to vinyl, rubber, resin, foam, metal, wood etc. Motorbot painted a few vinyl pieces with HomeBrew already. I believe that he might be doing a couple of your vinyl pieces too. And thank you Blurble for turning me on to this community and with your thoughts on the paint!
ready and willing to try it, hint hint... i'm getting close to investing in a v-color pallette in the next few months, but i'd be thrilled with another option.
I hope to have the site launched with in a couple weeks. Before I started HB, I looked into using Vcolor (and other companies) for my own/client work. Vcolor is excellent vinyl paint, the colors are amazing but the price and limited availability of it, ultimately made me decide to pass and start formulating my own paint/dye . (not bashing, just my experience) Like I said, the colors are great! I actually need to get some myself to see how HB compares to it.
I have used both Vcolor and HB. I can say that Vcolor is very frustrating for me to use I can't get the exact ratio down its either to runny or not enough and the paint comes out like spider webs. I honestly don't have time to figure it out and when I have free time to actually sit and paint I want to be able to use the paint straight out of the bottle and not worry about mixing ratios. Homebrew has been a breeze to paint with. It's so much faster to just flip the lid and dump paint into the brush and paint. That's just my two cents.
I find after time any paint thickens and even if you don't need to thin it new, you eventually will. What do you use to thin it?
Very true. The Vcolor I have used the Vcolor thinner and lure thinner. I also am using glass bottles to mix the paint. Sometimes the paint just drips down the vinyl because its to thin or it shoots out this spider web stuff because I guess there's not enough thinner. I am assuming paint thinner can be used to thin out the HB if it thickens up.
Yes sir! It all will eventually dry out. Any medium drying lacquer thinner will work. In a pinch, I've used acetone and 90% alcohol but I find that those dry out fast. I prefer the Medium dry lacquer thinner.
What psi are you spraying vcolor with? I have mine set to 20-25 psi and have never had it drip or run.
I use straight up lacquer thinner from ACE to thin it... works just fine. It's the Kleen Strip brand. I find it to be slightly better quality than others I've used... The only non V-Color thinner I had luck with was Mr. Color. That seemed to mix well with v color. unless it's thinned rather well...1:1 or greater. V spider webs. yeah it dries crazy fast, but in the end it's a pain in the ass... I would be interested to try HB tho..
I run about 25psi. I think I have to much thinner. Because the solid colors appear almost as a c-thru color.
Has anyone else tried the HB paints yet? This thread sort of turned into a v-color discussion.. No one really responded to the OP question about how it stacks up w/Monster Kolor. I'm in the market for some paints and the price breakdown of HB vs MK is very tempting. EDIT: I said "F it" and ordered a healthy sample set of these colors. I hope they are good. They were def slightly cheaper compared to MK! I'll post my thoughts on them down the road.

Question, can i use this paint on top of V-Color or Monster Color? Can i use MK clear coat on top of this paint? Are the SPECIAL BLEND PAINTS ready to use on the airbrush as well or does it need to be thinned? I've been looking for a good airbrush paint for a while and this seems to be a good option. HB can be painted over mk or Vcolor. No worries. Mks clear coat is nice and will work without any issues . HomeBrew also has it's own super high gloss clear coat available too. Same mix ratio of 2:1. Everyone who has tried both HB and MK says that HomeBrews clear coat dries faster than Mk. Special Blends are, in general, ready to spray. Gid is a bit thicker than the rest of the blends due to the amount of gid added to the mix. A little thinning may be needed to spray that blend. Thanks for the questions! J
I'm also considering HB or MK, I've used MK in the past and enjoyed it, but we all can appreciate the price difference. Right now I'm looking at resin dyes, specifically GID. Has anyone used both HB and MK? Rad that you can spray the GID HB! Has anyone tried spraying any of the MK glow dyes?
I got some, but then I promptly went to Puerto Rico for 2 weeks! Now that I'm back I will be testing them out sometime this week.
Has anyone used MK and Homebrew paints over each other? How about using the different clear coats over each companies paints? Any info would be appreciated. Going to paint 2 giant figures for my class projects and I would like to order some paint from Homebrew, already have some MK.
HB and MK are totally compatible, other than some slight color differences, they are virtually the same. The 2part Clear system is the same from both companies.
Very cool. I really like using v color and others like it. I started with monster and just got used to it. Same with v color. For different paint schemes I like certain paints by a certain company. So I'll be excited to try a few bottles, and can't add another paint scheme\ app. to the tools. Always like seeing new paint!!!
Have you guys used the GID paint thats offered by them? Ive understood its mainly for casting, but ive been looking for a good gid paint to run through an airbrush. Ive came up empty.
