How can one be bitter and jaded against Hxs releases when you were a collector who had the connection but then sold off to profit $100,000 USD?

Haha, in the HxS talking about buying Nag instead which is even more expensive and nearly impossible to acquire.
But you know what would be cool and some of you will hate this idea, a HxS x Buta collab. If Buta made a little mecha gorilla in their style. That would be a sweet little toy.

 

I don’t hate that idea at all. His Gundam work is great. And I bet Buta would sell it for the same reasonable price he’s always sold his work for. Not to me, but to some nice people that have been in it for the long haul.

Just wanted to clarify, I did not buy the robot and I don't own any HxS, lol. Way out of my price range. I was just piggybacking off of what @bbb had said about sneakers.

Made me smile to imagine the idea of a collab. I think Mr.O is more interested in good meals, strolling the town, shopping for treats, working hard on his own projects, and living happily with his wife. Not to mention some nice daily drawings to show what he's up to

Can't imagine him frequently designer stores and wild disco nights, fancy duds, and fancy followers, special monetary favors for special access, posting extravagant gifts, etc... Both totally different life styles (no judgement ). Can't see their paths crossing.

BTW, as much as I like the King Joe, it's difficult to keep the body parts cohesive and standing stably. And quite pricey if you are purchasing the parts individually.

 

Do you know Hirota's lifestyle? Or Mr. O for that matter? Hirota is more down to earth and hard working than most. Dude's been wearing the same pair of Nike's for the last two or three Exhibitions and rocks a G-Shock watch. He surfs and snowboards and boxes ffs. All that just sounds exhausting to me, not fancy. He doesn't wear anything designer. You're conflating his collectors and fans' lifestyle with his own. The fact that he's able to do collaborations with established brands or companies is a credit to his own brand, craftsmanship and hard work.

I've met him several times. He's chill and cares about his collectors. Most of you haven't met the man or have any idea what's important to him - it's the funniest thing about this thread. Making assumptions and your own narrative is easy behind a keyboard sitting at home (and maybe it's fun too). This isn't intended as combative, or anything personal. Your description of HxS just isn't accurate. What can he do to control the lifestyles of his fans or the gifts he receives? He posts the gifts as a means of appreciation (it's a very Japanese thing) not as a flex. Hirota don't need to flex.

I wanted to post a picture of his sofubi factory from the 25th anniversary Medicom book, but have no idea how to upload shit. But it ain't fancy. And I'd guess that he enjoys good meals, hanging out with friends, working hard on his own projects (while also having to collaborate with various external projects) and living happily with his family... pretty much just like all of us.

I've met him. I found him to be very gracious, down to earth and friendly. Definitely not representative of his fan base in terms of flashiness no.

I dont collect his work anymore because it's too expensive, too competitive and the atmosphere around it all is just too crazy.

But I don't begrudge him any of his success. I can't imagine any of us would really turn down any of the accolades and achievements he's had and his work really is good enough to deserve the attention it has received.

I'm not going back through the thread but I'm sure all of this has been discussed before ad naseum here and in the nah thread.

HxS might have taken it to new heights now though

 

There are new pieces for every Exhibition. That alone is something nobody else does. Cause it's fucking hard creating brand new toys every year or multiple times a year.

 

well said Derek, he does care for his fans, I have never send HxS any gift/flowers, never been to his show, never won any one off pieces. However, he still let me won a few times even after I missed his lottery due to different time zone. I am not speaking for all the fans here, but personally I definitely feel he cares about his fans.

 

I’ve also met him- he’s really nice and gave me a ton of stickers.

also- I receive a ton of gifts and souvenirs (including random food and drink) from my solo showings in Japan- does that make me evil?

I don’t collect HxS but the toys look cool. I’ve also spent more than the retail of this chogokin gorilla on a single toy before so maybe I’m not the best barometer for this type of discourse.
