Healey, just took a real look at your web-site. That is some crazy stuff but I like it. What type of models do you use for the vehicle kit bashes. It looks like a mix between Anime vehicles and then real tanks. Really awesome stuff and welcome to the board. The GI Joe/Star Wars Mash-ups are really cool, I love the pink Barbq/Leia Bounty Hunter/Pigtails.
The kitbash vehicles are all made from military models and car models. I wanted to use only non fictional parts when I was doing this series.

are any of these originals or just kit bash resin pours? the quality is nice but the price seems high for a combination of two toys i could probably find for half.
I think they are kitbashed with some sculpting done to the figures. The usual price is $40ish but most of those are sold out (the myplasticheart releases etc.). I can't argue with price seeing as my main collection is Suckadelic. To me, part of what makes Healey's figures so great is how well they are cast and the colors/shades and swirls he is able to achieve. I also love the weight of resin over vinyl.
yeah, i like resin a lot too. i was referring to that vampire bat dude that is 75 dollars, probably due to the collaboration with the store. but its also blank, catch 22 i guess. it really shows the beauty of the technique. his applications are great and flawless, i just want to see what comes out of his brain as opposed to sticking things together. oh well, apples and oranges! i havent really seen any of his stuff that lights my fire, but who knows what the future holds!
Its funny but the reason I want these are pretty much in reverse to why I used to buy Le Merde. Some of the early casts I have from Le Merde I would qualify as "not good" but I loved the character and the aesthetic of his casts. These, I don't like the mashup figures at all but the casting itself is just so beautiful.
You know this attitude around the internet toy scene bothers me - So I'm going to hopefully speak on it without pissing everyone off or hi-jacking this thread... Michael this really isn't directed at you personally - but you just happened to be the one in this thread who is gonna send me off on this tangent. Sorry in advance. ------ David's creativity is immense. ONLY AFTER people do something great and come up with their own conceptual works, and invest all this time and money and energy into perfecting it - do people casually say "I coulda done that by just BUYING two things." David does all kinds of crazy work to get his final pieces he casts from. Referring to his work as a kit bash is pretty unfair. Even worse to chop his ability down to you going shopping? That's just cruel. His editorial concepts are very strong, and executed with meticulous perfection. David uses far more molding and casting technique and cure time, at his own expense to get this level of result. David (healey made) and Morgan (suckadelic) are equivalent to being the new avant garde. I'm sure you guys will roll your eyes at this - but while their work seems so shallow and surface, it's ingenious. It is certainly subjective, and I'm far too into art and design than most on this board to not love David's work... And while David's work may not be for everyone - It's no where nearly as simple as finding junk or two toys and slapping them together, followed by cups of crudely poured resin in your momma's house. But! This is exactly what people thought of Warhol, Al Hansen, Harring and Basquiat for trying to charge $200 for a painting, or god forbid a brillo box. They eventually rose to greatness, and these guys are already there and going up. Side note : I don't know who started this weak-hippie-toy commune bullshit that people aren't allowed to make money around here. But people on this board should be supporting one another and helping everyone here make millions. Not crying about being a bum cus YOU won't hustle. NOW WE GOTTA SELL DISCOUNT? Wanna collect cheap toys? Go to McDonald's and order a happy meal. Free stuff in there bro. Collecting this type of work is a LUXURY. It is not a necessity. You're not entitled to anything. The people who self produce here are not Popy or Bullmark or Super-7. They don't run millions or even thousands of pieces. Maybe you should go tell Ron English his canvas only cost $100 and all his other expenses, like your calculating wholesale into a price for buying a blank t-shirt at wal-mart, and that's why you think he only deserves $400 for a painting. And don't forget to mention: all he does is put 2 different cartoon characters into a scene together, and that YOU coulda thought of that. Lemme know how that goes. At any rate - it doesn't just cost $500 or $600 to make a perfect run of 15 or 20 small resin pieces. It takes YEARS of experience, and all the previous materials, life energy and creativity. Don't forget all the shitty hours of work. AND don't forget all the fun of having bills, a studio, equipment and all that other stuff that isn't any of your damn business. Have some respect and show some support.
great post, diceone. i couldn't agree with you more... anyone who thinks casting is 'easy' has obviously never done it. i'm not here to ruffle feathers, either, but it's certainly not pressing a button on a xerox machine by any means. quality takes time, no matter what medium it is. it boils down to the choices and judgement made by the artist, no matter what. taste is taste, but craftsmanship isn't generally disputable. one of my illustration professors once said something which has rang true for decades of my creative career: "if you don't have to draw it from scratch, why the hell would you?" and btw, the 'grhoul' is one of the greatest pieces i've ever seen. the form is damn near perfect. and the supreme paint job takes it totally over the top...great work guys.
Are the quackula's resin or vinyl? I'm confused after seeing the sale page at mishka. The solid's definitely don't do anything for me, it was that black twist in them that really made them stand out.
Quackulas are resin. Trouble and Bass, I think misidentified them as vinyl. The Quackula for me is probably my favorite figure of the Healey line so far. I really need to take some pics of the ones I have and the one en route to me. I have a great solid swirl one and a translucent swirled one on the way. However, the solid purple I have shows off how great the figure itself is sculpted. I will try to take some pictures tonight. The beak and duck feet are perfectly sculpted onto the figure and it gives off a great Count Duckula vibe. Whatever pieces David used in the making he did a great job of appropriating them. I see a Quackula and not a Dracula mixed with whatever else if any was used. I think it's easy to lose perspective of how great the figure itself is when it's cast as masterfully as Healey does. It's easy to comment solely on the casting and not the figure itself when what's happeing inside the figure is so insanely great. Staring at my solid purple reminds that the sculpt itself is fantastic as well. For those of you interested you can contact Healey directly about available work too. An aside comment on pricing, most Healey figs are $40-65. In the art/toy world that's absurdly cheap for a handcast figure. You aren't getting just any cast from him, he only uses perfect castings. I'll pay that price for that kind of quality any day and consider myself lucky.
Haha, nice to see Blackstar being represented. I am still more drawn to all the SW figs though - those Bossk mash-ups definitely look cool. You certainly can't fault him on craftsmanship or execution. Unfortunately, due to the nature of working in resin, we will probably never see large runs of these, and they will remain 'art pieces.' And that's just fine, but just might explain why you can catch slack from the 'toy' community.
