This sounds really cool, but I won't be able to check it out it looks like. Anyone been to a shop yet? Any vinyl there?

Cool! Looks like there is one a few blocks away. I'll check it out for sure.

This is pretty cool, but would/will(?) be so much better if they take this opportunity to extend the merchandise beyond just simple marketing for the current film. Which could be, it does mention the Shin Goji as an example, but I maintain a healthy dose of skepticism. In fairness, I get that Legendary would not necessary want to 'dilute' their message by giving free advertisement to the films and output of other studios, so from a business point of view, the opportunity seems more meh than the massive kaiju superstore I am envisioning.... in my dreams.

Most of the things listed have nothing to do with the new movie. The B-side stickers are awesome and unrelated to the new film. Same with that shirt people sell for 5 times the retail price because it's always sold out. It almost feels like they are trying to remind people that Godzilla isn't just some new American movie thing and pushing the Japanese stuff with these pop ups.

I guess I'll know more when I go there myself.

I wish my local Kinokuniya shop had been selected to participate. Ah, well, looking forward to hearing more about this or seeing some photos.

@Waterbear Thanks man, that does fill me with hope. Good luck with the visit, I hope you manage to find some interesting stuff. And yeah, I take massive pleasure when 're-releases' etc. take money away from scalpers/aftermarket flippers trying to just seize on manufactured "rarity." Thankfully at the end of the day this is all mass-produced stuff, and the more people that can enjoy it for what it is itself, versus some BS scarcity, means that true can just cool stuff, and at the same time, producers are sort of held to making decent products, or else it risks becoming shelf-filler.*

    * versus the art toy model, where the actual product appeal seems secondary to whatever limited number a run is

Found an instagram post showing off one of the locations already. Looks like it's almost entirely classic Godzilla stuff from shirts and books and stickers to toys and keychain things and art. Pretty damn cool!

Damn, very cool indeed. Thanks for posting that here. I even see some sofubi contingent by way of the Marugachas. :) This looks like some worth checking out for those people who are close enough to make a journey. Now they just need to combine it with some Godzilla-themed food (and beverages!) via food truck. One thing that is actually frustratingly difficult to get your hands on outside of NA is English language (subbed, but dubbed for that matter too) versions of the classic films. It has been so long since I have been able to enjoy these movies, it pains all the time.

That's not to say there aren't a ton of other tokusatsu and classic monster movies I would just LOVE to be able to watch at home regularly, but I am just shocked at how sparse any releases are for the King of Monsters. I (and probably the vast majority of the folks reading this here) took it completely for granted that you could pick up a Godzilla series movie on VHS/DVD/BD from most any of your average shops [when they existed]. Their ubiquity took away from their appreciation. Now those things are like gold to me. I am just not sure what the licensing hangup is. Checking out Amazon sites for Italy, France, Germany, Spain, etc., you can see - for whatever reason - this is a pretty isolated issue. And especially with companies like Arrow and 88 Films going incredible things for building those film catalogues, this is one area that is so sorely addressed. The Australian/NZ market at least got the sets from Manga, but these have been quite pricey to chase down. I would love to see Toho, in conjunction with another pressing company, deliver some hardcopy versions (in some format). Anyways, I digress.

Hope more folks can make it out to check these pop ups!

Went to the NJ one today. It sucked. No signage pointing out the merch. Small stickers for $7 each, SD keychains for $10, that Shin Godzilla phone stand for $45. Not much else merch aside from notebooks and folders. Thumbs down.

I went yesterday to the NJ one too. Very disappointing, nothing I even considered buying. No shirts or toys.

Good god, that's got to be 20x larger than the display in the Seattle store. Was crazy bummed.

About the best thing I can say is that it looked like they had all of the SFX books, and at a good price, too.

Wow. With such a small handful of locations you’d think they’d really bring out the stuff... :?

I'm pretty sure this was just a half-assed attempt for Kinokuniya to try and hustle existing Godzilla-related stock. Everything there was overpriced and easily obtainable online months ago.

If I was involved with marketing at Legendary/Warner Bros, I'd be disappointed in the results.

Yup it was pretty ho-hum. Seemed like they just moved the normal Godzilla stuff they have all to one spot. The bookstore itself is amazing though. Love that place. And the model shop across the street has that giant Godzilla with a tail like 5 feet long.

Actually contacted the store. They said they're getting more of the G-Store product in early June but couldn't give specifics...guess we'll see...

And re you talking about the Gundam model shop about a half-block away, near the park? Was closed when I was there but did some window peering. Intentionally went early on a Sunday because me in that district when the Pinball Museum is open...well, that's just not a good idea.
