Damn man, sorry to hear that. My brother used his Wife's extended family to borrow enough money to get a mortgage. He would of been fucked otherwise.

Thanks, man. I tried in my family, but times are tough all over. Yeah, it blows, esp. because, if it had worked out, our monthly payment would have been about $75/mo less than what we are about to pay in rent for the new place. Blaaargh.

 

I am sorry to hear :\ a lot of my friends are going through the same thing here in Texas. With companies out of California venturing in and moving their employees here, they have started offering $50k + over asking pricing on homes. An example would be Toyota headquarters, they are offering employees roughly $80k to make that move so that they can settle in and what not. If they already have a home that they can sell for $750k in the California market and homes here started at $150k, that's a no brainer to make that move! Homes are now priced at $300k+ off the bat and locals can't even afford to make that mortgage! If I didn't buy my house when I did, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it either. Everything has gone up in cost while wages remain the same...

Sorry to hear about what you and your family have had to endure lately Mike, I can't imagine what that must have been like. Congrats on your wife graduating, landing the job, and y'all finding another place though. Hard work is definitely not without its rewards and I'm glad things are starting to look brighter for y'all. I hope the latter half of 2017 will be better!

 

I hear you, Kay- I used to own, bought my first house in 1998 in a much more rural part of the state. Price was crazy low, by today's standards. That was sold after divorce in 2010... I then moved several towns away, to Burlington, and have been renting since. The city is trying (once again), along with neighboring Winooski, to reinvent itself as a sort of Northeast tech-job mecca, under the leadership of our slick, pandering-to-one-monied-demographic, former developer mayor and his developer cronies. I get the need for it- VT still has the lowest retention of its young people (they call this "brain drain") in the country, I believe- but currently it's manifesting in many long-time residents, poor and working class families, artists, musicians (you know, all the usual folks affected by such) being priced out.

 

I was going to say some FUs , but... I sincerely hope there's a positive outcome to all of yall's troubles as of late... If it's a more dire situation where that's not an option, I wish you comfort through it.

Anyone who wants to leave the world for awhile is welcome here.

Fuck phone and tablet batteries.
They can't be removed and replaced without voiding the warranty because the companies need more money, they don't bother to develop a new kind of battery because then they wouldn't have people coming back to buy a brand new device every year or so....
I love the convenience of a thin and portable device, but damn do I miss just being able to swap out my laptop battery for a pre-charged one whenever I needed to.
And yes, I could buy an external battery, and I have, but for some reason they seem to degrade even fucking quicker. UGHHHH

I am honestly a little saddened after reading that one of the main guys behind the writing of the show said the cancellation will haunt him for the rest of his life because the series was more than popular enough to have a second season and only got shutdown because some new suit at the network decided original content isn't what they want anymore.

 

I don't know why people want to "trendify" things that they obviously aren't familiar with. Down here in Oklahoma we have a recently opened restaurant that specializes in banh mi, which is kind of like the Vietnamese response to the French baguette sandwich; their po' boy so to speak. So my sister finally is the one to take me there, and I'll be damned if it isn't literally a straight-out-of-a-sitcom fusion place run by stereotypical white hipsters. They want to promote a Mexican "take" on this Franco-Indochinese modern classic.
I know that this kind of sentiment tends to make people very defensive, but this is the epitome of what people mean when they say something is "cultural appropriation".

 

And I bet they charge more for the.faux banh mi than a real mom'n'pop Vietnamese deli ($2.25 - $2.75in my neck ok the woods). And I also bet most of their clientele would not even set foot inside a real Vietnamese deli.

One of the reasons that a longer lasting battery has not been made yet is because of the stability of the chemicals used to make said battery. Remember how all those Samsung phones were blowing up and/or catching fire? That's exactly why a longer lasting battery hasn't been developed yet.

As far as external batteries go, buy yourself an Anker battery pack. They seem to be some of the best that I have ever used and their warranty is legit if it dies early, which I've never had happen...

 

Exactly. It wasn't too pricey, but I literally live around the corner from a family-owned fixture in town that is excellent and affordable. I have just never seen banh mi on their menu, I don't think that it was a popular dish from the region that they came from.

Having worked in the grocery/food service industry for some time now, the casual racism that Americans attach to food still amazes me. I hear people make remarks like "I can't stand going into the Asian grocery stores, it always smells like fish," which is understandable since people often complain that our seafood counter pervades the area with the scent of fish too. OK, the smell of fish is gross to some folks.

It's when people complain about things like "don't you have any domestically grown ginger? I don't want to buy things that come from China." I explained to this fellow that ginger (a quintessentially Chinese food) originates from China, and they are still the primary commercial producers of said crop. (After this exchange I looked up if there were any commercial growing areas in the U.S. Yes, in California... but it was the wrong season at the time.) This guy goes into some excuse about how he isn't racist, we grow everything here in the U.S now blah blah I FART A LOT.

Don't get me started on all the people that are convinced that Mexico (meaning anywhere in the Americas south of Texas,) uses human manure as fertilizer, and how that is so disgusting. News flash: so do we, and civilization has for thousands of years, dumbass!

 

That just sounds like an odd fusion I don't want to try.

Similar thing happened here except with people trying to do their own take on pho soup. Pho is incredibly popular here and usually very authentic and cheap at the same time. I can get an extra large bowl at a dozen different places for right around 7 bucks easily.

One of my favorite parts are the places themselves. Usually very small and filled with language and music I don't understand in any way(I'm learning though)but it makes the experience itself pretty fun. Plus the speed is amazing. From sitting down and ordering to getting my bowl is generally less than 5 minutes no matter how busy it is and the soup is always served boiling hot because the meat they add on top is raw and wouldn't cook when stirred otherwise.

So over the last couple of years people have tried to cash in out the popularity by taking the same exact concept and changing up the ingredients but it always fails. The last one was an "organic health full" take run by two very obnoxious women who thought replacing the piles of thai basil you normally get with kale and micro greens and charging 18 bucks for a SMALL would somehow work. Even the normal ingredients you find on any pho table like plum sauce and fish sauce and hot chili oil were extras you had to order and pay for. They even removed all the cool slightly scary options like tendon and tripe and fish balls. I ate there just once and I hated it. The broth was flavorless and usually the amazing broth is the entire point of pho. The ladies at the table next to mine kept commenting about how they love being able to order ethnic food without having to struggle with language barriers. How fucking hard is it to smile and point to a number on a menu or maybe even learn the name of the food you want to stuff in your stupid face? The place lasted 3 months.

Less conspiracy and more "marketing genius" in regards to sealed batteries. Initial FU to Apple and current FU to all the other manufacturers who finally got hip and followed suit. The 3 billion Samsung lost over the Galaxy Note 7 debacle serves them right.

All said, the real FU goes to the "gotta have the latest, greatest, SIIICKest" aka "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality that has spread through our modern culture like a disease. Of course other OEMs would fall in line with the iPhone paradigm... faster, better camera, water-resistant, and (most importantly) lighter and SLIMMER is the name of the game. Which means internally sealed batteries for us all = definite shelf life and guaranteed "upgrading" to the latest hot shit in a given amount of time (the hardcore iPhone fanatics won't even wait that long) = $$$

Hence my "ancient" Galaxy phone. Battery starts dying? Time for a new one. Bought a few questionable ones off ebay with varying degrees of longevity... Recently discovered Anker, and will agree their products (and customer service) seem legit. Been using one of their batteries in my phone for about a month now and have no complaints.
