At the end of the day, convention promoters are doing it to turn a dime. we can all speculate, but it probably is for sure a lot cheaper up in Beacon than in Brooklyn... is that savings going to trickle down for vendors and attendees as far as booth, ticket pricing? only time will tell.

I was gonna say yesterday, you can bet your ass they will still charge $150 for "VIP" and try to give you a bag of junk to justify it.

 

Well, it’s an easy 40 minute drive for me, so I’ll be hawking wares out the side door of my camper van. Since I can drive stuff over, I’ll be trying to bring some of Gol/Mitari’s retro Japanese stuff and a bunch of other antique and retro Japanese handycrafts and the like. At least that’s the plan as of now…

I doubt there will be a strong international presence, but it sounds like Sunguts will still go.

 

I was wondering about Sunguts. Glad they're going to be there.

 

Tickets are still $130 for VIP weekend but if you purchase early (before April 3) it is $110.
I'm glad to see they took the feedback from last year about how it was annoying that only the people who bought VIP late got a discount.

 

I won’t be able to make it out there this year.
I hope that it’s a success for everyone involved, that clutter and the artist can thrive in the face of change.
With everything going on right now, any event that can bring us together is a good thing.

I'm sure Rich will see this, but I noticed he wasn't on the list either. Still im sure he will be there. He has already gathered RSVP, and the other day posted to his story that it will be a "Big Show." Also, the giveaway toy for VIPs this year is an MVH toy. Given that it will be an edition of 200-300 (i forgot how many vip badges they do but its in this range), I would guess it will be one of his works with Unbox, such as a chibi or small smog monster. This is pure speculation on my part.

Mvh VIP toy is a random marbled chibi. Pretty nice! Since there are four variants, my extra toy will likely not go to waste this year.

 

The latest episode of the Toys on Tap podcast features the Clutter and Toy Pizza organizers. They're pretty candid about what worked and didn't work about previous shows and their expectations for this one. There are also some interesting tidbits in there about previous efforts to get an NYC-area event going, including a reference to a situation where StrangeCo got screwed over in a licensing deal involving MoMA.

 

As we get closer to FPF I can't help but be disappointed more and more by the move from Brooklyn. I think its going to kill the con which sucks because I really looked forward to a fun NYC trip with my toy friends from across the country. Now its a 3+ hour train ride from the airport and truth be told, it's such a pain in the ass I don't want to go and frankly it looks like I am not alone on both sides of the table.

 

I just listened to this, and it really does contextualize a lot of the issues leading up to such a big move to Beacon. I think the issue is, you can only really explain this on something like a Podcast, it's hard to just info dump on a social media post.

I personally think they should have done this show in Beacon and label it as something like, Five Points North, because such a big draw nationwide and worldwide, is visiting NYC and the surrounding boroughs, but as mentioned on the podcast, they are completely justified on why on paper, Brooklyn is no longer an option. I speak from the outside looking in, of course. I don't know how much this costs and I feel sympathetic because it feels like there are a lot of moving parts and they speak about how, of course, corporate big business tends to ruin this stuff.
I applaud them for trying to just create a solid weekend hangout, and less about buying an exclusive toy.
I'd argue it will be a LOT closer to Toy Pizza Expo and previous Toy Pizza Cons, and less like previous Five Points Festivals. I'll definitely be there.

 

listened to this as well. and tried to be objective as much as i could but i just cant help but wonder which toy collectors are in such dire need of loud dj's and food trucks and wrestling and so on. I understand they want to make an experience i just havent personally met someone who wants that.

seems like it would be cheaper to focus down more instead of spreading it out even further. not once at a toy show do i wish i was sitting under a tree; i want to buy my dollies and go hang out with my friends darn it

they also kept mentioning ordering toys online and its like yeah true but have you considered i wanna meet the person making the thing im spending hundreds of dollars on possibly?? thats the draw for collectors like myself

 

I’ve always seen moves like this as parlor tricks to entice outside minds/eyes to be curious/interested in checking out an event they otherwise wouldn’t have. I haven’t been to an FPF since 2019, I think? Thought they it and ‘17 were great, but the more I read/hear about last year and the move it sounds like they’ve lost so much steam already.
