Not as bad as SANKA, but it's not as harsh as Starbucks and DD's. Plus I don't spend the money on that stuff...more for toys right?

yeah i never buy coffee that someone else has made - i am happy with the little that i now drink coming from a can.

my wife bought an iced chai the other day and that shit was 4 bucks!

we went to trader joe's immediately after and bought her some chai mix for 4 bucks that will make a gallon

trader joe's has some good fair-trade coffee

occassionally we get trader joe's instant as well. i'm not particular, but i like making my own at home and at work.

like you said, $4 each. i know people here at work who go to DD's three times a day and do that. nuts if you ask me. if you do that 5 days a week, that's a figure in my eyes.

I only like super-strong coffee. Usually cheap Latino supermarkets have the BEST coffee, Puerto Rican, Cuban or Ecuadorian are some of my favs, for like $1.35 a brick. I also like southern coffee with chicory, OMG!

If I can see the bottom of my cup, it's too weak and screw it! I find I'm not into a lot of bigger name brands, again usually just too weak for me.

Have you had Lebanese/Arab style prepared coffee? Sludge in the bottom of the cup! And so strong! Yum

Even one a day adds up. $80 a month? That's crazy.
I used to buy two cups of french roast on the weekends (as I get it free at work) and I stopped that a while ago.

I've had Turkish coffee once, WHOA!

Not a lot of particularly Mideastern-ish ethnic markets in my area, lots of Hispanic and Asian. I'll try and hunt some down though.

If you really like the super strong stuff...there's absolutely Nothing better than making your own.

Sweet Marias is where I get most of my (green)coffee and accessories.
They sell ALL types of coffee brewing types from french press to espresso, vacuum brewers to ibriks(turkish)

Also every week they roast a small batch of 3 different types/styles of coffee (brewed, espresso, decaf from 3 different regions) which is a Great way to try different coffee styles from different regions.
Truly artisanal roasted at a great price, puts anything else (charbucks etc) to shame.

Whole bean btw, you would need your own grinder. The grind is one of the most important parts to the flavor of coffee

MMMmmnn coffee, I get angry if I don't down 3 cups in the morning but then again I tend to get angry after it so...Anyhow I had this "Can you buy me this through Celga?" situation happen to me before and the quick fix (if you have the patience) is to just do a quick run down with that person on how it works and send them the Celga link. You can usually weed out someone who is genuinely interested in kaiju from a flipper. I still think it takes some big balls to ask another member here that you barely know through cyberspace to do it for you. Some people are really lazy and don't do their homework.

Also I think it would be a good idea when someone new signs up if they get some kind of welcome email with FAQS or Definite No No's, it would cut down annoyances here but still allow occasional bashings of offenders who choose not to read it.

Haha, my wife works at the 'Bucks so we get beans for free and sometimes I can snag a free drink if I visit her at work. But the thought of going down there on my own to get a cup... sorry, but not gonna happen! Canned costs around a buck and half for a big one, and McDonald's has a drinkable cup for a dollar. I'm not one of those guys who doesn't even go out to eat because he wants to spend all his money on figures (trust me, I've met 'em...) but $5 for coffee a couple times a week adds up!

Any of you guys ever have Bali coffee? KILLER! It's got this great woody taste and it's really mild, so you can drink all you want without tweeking out. Right after Vietnamese coffee for my favorite "relax time" coffee! Of course, it can't replace a double red eye for that early morning cup, though.

Yeah, and the idea about sending a Fresh Meat Mailer is great! There are some "unwritten rules" around here that are very easy for a new guy to break, but very annoying for the person on the other end.

Sweet Marias is a treasure indeed. Highly recommended.

Since I spend winters in Miami drinking Cuban coffee, and summers in NorCal drinking all the good local roasts (Thanksgiving Coffee Co. is a real find - worth trying for those who have not), I get a nice mix.

My theory (though probably not original) is that the closer you get to the equator, the stronger (and often better) the coffee gets. Think Cuban, Turkish, Greek, Italian, Indonesian, etc ... And, not only do I associate good coffee with hot places, somehow I associate the pale awfulness of Folger's and Maxwell House and similar stable-sweepings with Northern European immigrants in the US Midwest - All those good Nordic Lutherans drink incredibly awful dreck. It seems to hold true.

I assume this is because, when it's 90 degrees F and 90% humidity, the last thing on Earth you want is a big honkin' 12 oz. cup of steaming hot coffee. But we still want/need the buzz, so the equatorials simply pack a hefty dose of caffeine into a thimble-sized cup. Some of the best coffee I've ever had has come from random streetside windows in Miami, serving Cuban coffee in those tiny little plastic mayonnaise-type cups. A 'pitcher' of this coffee (a colada) comes in a 'small'-size styro cup, and comes with a half-dozen of the little tiny cups on top, for serving it out. More than once I have seen a tourist get one of these and drink it like it was a single cup - If I took in that much jet fuel at once, I think I would vibrate down into my component molecules. More than one big office in Miami has a sweet grandmotherly Cuban lady in their employ, whose entire job is to keep the cafecitos coming all day long. For the intricacies of ordering Cuban coffee, see http://miami.about.com/cs/restaurants/a/cafecubano.htm

Funny how this thread got derailed. Watching posts on this board is like watching an episode of the Simpsons. From angry about live posts to advise on coffee ???

I'm pretty sure that if I visited the South, and asked for a hoecake, I'd be shot dead on the spot...
