ya i def dont feel like any of that is up for debate. theres a whole world of inspiritation that hasnt been driven into the ground, my wish is that artists explore that.

    I totally agree!
It’s hard for artists to kill their darlings.
I wish makers would seek out creative council much more than they do. Compassionate critique is wonderful tool.

I wish these rips of IP’s we’re done tastefully and, in a roundabout way, more original to the individual’s take, a la vintage pachi style toys. Muira Toy is a prime example, where, they straight up ripped Goji, Gomora and Ghidorah. But they’re *just* recognizable enough where you can kinda chuckle at how comically charming they are, but done so badly they’re good. Almost like, “Man, they really tried!” I’m not an artist. I have no artistic/creative sensibility and I certainly don’t have the mental capacity to break art down outside of my personal “Ooh, I like that for this reason!” That being said, I think it gets more and more obvious when these artists and makers are just looking at the market and producing contrived, repeated toy designs with an insanely quick turnaround time to get them overpriced, paid for and coveted by overly eager collectors. Now this isn’t to say that many of these collectors don’t genuinely enjoy these toys, but I think that’s where the forcefulness of how badly done and OVERLY done a lot of these designs are. So much shit is just beatin’ into the ground, that, when something is even tastefully done I have a hard time enjoying it. Like the Ed Roth stuff. Headlock was doin’ it almost 20 years ago, and aside from Rat Fink licensed toys, Take Shit, Splurrt and Paul Kaiju are the only makers I can think of off the top of my head that have had the influence in their toys before Headlock made the return. This outlook, dare I say rant, is obviously a personal issue I have with the outlook. I’m not even sure if I’m sure of what I’m babbling about.

Okay this “painter” needs to get checked for color blindness, I refuse to believe a person with normal sight would do this.
This is probably enough to send an art teacher into madness, praying furiously to the gods of the Color Wheel.

Ha! Since he discovered UV paint and glitter its got even worse. Everytime he shows off a blank you just know its going to get covered in slop and ruined, its cringe worthy.

I dig these things. It's one of those times where the material makes a huge difference for me. He works with ceramics and his stuff works really well that way. Heavy glazes and very simple colors. Like some fantasy tim burton type stuff. Comparing this stuff to vinyl toys wouldn't really make any sense. These things are clay and many are finished in open camp fires.

If these were vinyl none of it would make sense. The shiny finish would come off like really poor clear coats on unimpressive paint work. But with ceramic glaze he's actually doing a really nice job. Doing that with the teeth and eyes is not easy at all. I think this is just a case of a totally different material and process that doesn't compare well at all to vinyl stuff. Plus these are not his best designs at all. Some of these are okay but he has other work on his instagram that is pretty damn cool.

Thanks for the post! Always cool to find a new artist I like.

I agree... these are bad ass. Ceramic is a difficult medium. Kudos to dude for making that medium his own.

Is it strange that the material changed my mind? I assumed it was vinyl and was just another grotesque monster toy, but learning that they’re ceramic... that’s actually pretty amazing. I’ve been playing around with ceramics for years and I know how difficult it is to glaze nicely. Some glazes drip in the kiln, some need to be fired at a certain cone to get the desired look, some glazes are so thin that you have to add almost 4 or 5 layers... I’m also not that great a sculptor, I get frustrated by the clay because it starts to crack after a bit of use.
So yeah, as unique ceramic pieces, these are really impressive. Not my preferred subject matter, but still cool.

I don't think that is strange at all. I have always felt that different mediums need to be judged in different ways. I played with ceramics for years and the only time I tried to make something huge like his monsters it exploded in the kiln and took a bunch of other innocent pieces with it. Plus this guy isn't making stuff for mass production. Everything is a one of a kind sculpt.

Fun fact. The very first pulls of the original mini sludge demon have flake I bought directly from Lil Daddy Roth, Ed Roth’s son. That was about 10 years ago now.

I just don't find this trump stuff anywhere near wacky/satirical/poignant. I've even had to reappraise Cleon Petersons work recently after he went down this road. Sigh. I just wish it would all go away, its been 3 and a bit years guys....get funny or get gone.

Wow, where have we seen tornado arms before? Blatant rip.
And the whole fists-for-eyes thing... just looks really stupid. I guess they know that though, calling it Baka Rider. Still the unoriginality flows strong in this one.
