Welcome to the party, it’s been going on like this for the last 5-6 years. lol. My suggestion, is to find a new favorite (as in a different maker) to collect. I’ve pretty much given up on Several makers because of the influx of “nouveau riche” collectors that started flooding in around 2013 that only collect as a status symbol that have made collecting said makers nearly impossible unless you can out-price them (and I can’t). Nothing against the makers themselves, except for a few I have a bone to pick with, but these wealthy people who *need* every piece, every release and need to NOW.

And the worst part is, that I feel when they burn themselves out, they’re going to just leave the scene. No fire sale liquidations. Those pieces will just go away. When they move on to some new fad, because they don’t need the money, they won’t worry about selling. Or they’ll try to sell at the prices they overpaid for, realize no one’s biting, and just put it in storage.

RXH, hirota, nagx3 (although I never understood nag’s appeal),
Tkom, butanohana, izumonster, AAA, punk drunkers, target earth, bemon... and I’m sure more than a few others I’ve missed. All makers that I feel it’s just not feasible for a regular middle class soft vinyl enthusiast to collect anymore.

thankfully though there’s so much more out there that doesn’t land on those “collectors” radar that is just as good and fun and much much less expensive. If I never get another shot at a king gorilla ju, or an affordable Chaosman 6, that’s ok. I’ll take Bwana Spoons, Sunguts, old Secret Base, kvltvs, older Gargamel, etc and call it a fair trade off.

I can't help but wonder if schill bidding is increasing for toys that are becoming the "in" thing. With days to go, you'll notice that prices are already inflated. Is there any reason for that (am I missing something)? Why not place snipe bids or sit in ready to place live bids at the end? Since JYA bids are commonly extended an additional 5-10 minutes after each new bid (unlike ebay which ends promptly at the pre-arranged time), bidders can then placed their max bids and possibly limit schill bidding if everything is occurring at the end? Why place your max bid early, when it's easier for someone to outbid you? Just a thought?

I don't waste my time being disappointed with auction sites in the current climate so I'm all for this thread coming back to life.. looking forward to seeing photos of the samples and rare toys that pop up from time to time!

Not that I can afford to put up market prices for any of this stuff now, but when bidding on something I knew wouldn't go too high, with just one or two other bidders going in small increments, I would try and jump by a much larger amount a few days in advance. My reasoning was that the last minutes of the auction are when everyone wants something most, and people will bid a little outside their responsible limit in the heat of the moment. If I close them out early, they might not bother. Psychological warfare

On the other hand, if other bidders run with the change and approach or break my maximum, I know I can't compete early on, and I'm not tempted to break my budget.

When people are bidding at that range, I think they probably don't care about sniping or keeping the price down, as long as they win the bid. There is also a deterrence effect when you set a huge opening bid, as people may believe they will be priced out and give up early. (EDIT: I guess this is the same theory that zindabad describes.)

Hmm, that's funny, I try that strategy all the time, but no one seems intimidated by my 300yen bids. :(

I remember when Brian Flynn put up all his Butas for sale including these Astro boys...the regrets felt now since I didn’t collect any Buta back then

I remember that day too, so distinctly. One of those weird and crazy days on Skullbrain. Right up there with @Deadbone's Buta clearout, if you were around and lucky to be online (and with funds available) when these sales happened, you were very lucky.

It definitely was a stunner to wake up to! Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected the final outcome! @zindabad , @akum6n interesting strategy! Must be nice to have that sort of moolah to splash on toys, but as Stevie mentioned, it will be a shame they end up gathering dust somewhere, when their new owners lose interest. On the other hand, maybe their kids or grand kids will find them and relist them after settling the estate. Still thinking on what to do with my collection when I pass on....

p.s. I missed out on seeing Mr. Flynn's famous buta bbq sale. It must have been a doozy! Does anyone recall how many butas went up for readoption?

^ Dozens and dozens. And dozens. Two huge batches: a Toho heavy load back at the beginning of '11, and then a Tsuburayan paradise towards the end of that summer. Then there was the private sale...

Had pics and prices saved, but the record died with my old computer. Same with the sale info from @plastichunter's smaller yet still heartstopping dump from around the same time. Man, and then there was @Onion's purge. Where did he get to, anyway???

If we are going all nostalgic, I still pine for Kaiju Taro.

Ahhh, 2011-2013 is when I had to vanish for awhile.... A shame you're not able to repost the sale pics. I wonder if Mr. Flynn misses his buta herd? But then again, his collection of vintage is probably unrivaled in many universes. Just wish he could set up his own toy museum, that would be a sight to see!
...and luckily I was collecting when Kaju Taro existed. They were amazing! And also the original S7 Japan Town store, and their vintage shelves, Uglydolls, Kaiju shows, and tradefests! It was a terrific place to gather and trade toy stories and info. I'll always remember how nice everyone was and welcoming too! Not many girls collected kaiju back then.

it breaks my heart that I can't touch buta anymore. I had some heart stoppers, but life got in the way. Now price gets in the way. :(

:? Well, it's a different seller from last time, but it's a bit odd.

All I know is that those two YJA accounts sell a lot of rare Bemon test paints or micro runs. I had assumed it was the same seller using two different accounts.

I thought about that, but is it possible to link the accounts so that feedback for one is also featured on the other? And if so, wouldn't that kind of defeat the whole point of the feedback/trust rate?

A bloke on FB says he won one of these MVH Hyper Viper on eBay for (just under) $1,000.

Seems excessive, or is this part of the new normal?

@The Moog I wouldn’t say it’s uncommon. Excessive by most people’s standards, but the likes of Hirota, Blood Guts Toys, Synapse Toy, MVH, Butanohana, Spectrum Lab and more have steadily commanded climbing aftermarket prices. The aforementioned really have all built their own empires of success, and truthfully, I’d say Hirota’s the only one that’s welcomed the insanity. None of the aforementioned can necessarily control the aftermarket frenzy outside of diluting their own names by releasing mass amounts of product, for which no fan can sanely or seriously demand. It’d be nice in some cases, but not savvy or sound. Hell, even Target Earth and Hukkokudo have been garnishing higher prices on Mandarake for what that normal standard is. Even Headlock Studio is unfortunately creeping towards the high - ish end, with a Tibeo tiger sitting on Manda’ for ¥100,000. I wouldn’t say it’s the norm, just the current wave.

Indeed. What I find interesting though, is how some makers have taken years of hard work to achieve such desirability, where others become flipper fuel in just a few months.

This is a little weird with respect to timing (and that two of these 'special' versions are just sitting in the package in people's collections waiting to be sold), but if you look at the stickers on those packages, the last one from auction is definitely a different one from the earlier example. The one shared on IG could be the one which on YJA first, but actually even that I am not sure. But the distance between the stickers definitely allows you to know the two auctions were not the same toy. But regardless, I find the blurring out of the numbers, now on two successive auctions, the perfect example that people 'know' this behavior is slightly dodgy, and are trying to cover their assess/identities for future toys. Which is shit. If you are selling your toys, fine, but let's all be honest about it. By the same token I cannot stand people who will steal others' photos for their listing, or use stock images. That is all just BS. Show us what you got, and let buyers - and toy makers - decide for themselves; this is the real world not some bizarre fantasy life you live anonymously through social media. Of course it is that latter part which is the real problem, isn't it?

It's just a feeling, but it just seems like a bubble in modern.
I see so much sitting in after markets at IMO ridiculous prices.
So much being bought at IMO ridiculous prices.
Thought C-19 would reshuffle things and knock things down.

Part of the new normal and it'll likely get worse: economic recession/depression replacing some collectors with big money buyers, increasing collector bases in general, cultural differences in collecting markets, etc.

This whole hobby is excessive in the first place.
It is a luxury to be able to afford being a sofubi collector
I am thankful for this and hope to be able to collect for as long as I can
