Those have been around for years, glad to see the line is still going strong. I think E. Coli is cute.

If you took the tags off, you could sell these in any pet store.

That's the laziest riff on the Chogokin label I've ever seen.

Yeah I've dug these too at many science-themed locales. I think I might have even gifted a couple. I love ebola personally.... but I'll take a hard pass on having it all the same, thanks.

I am pretty sure that is exactly what you would get in a Sesame Street/Blue Peter/Mr. Dressup/Sendung mit der Maus art activity done up in <20min activity, if you held up a Nag to kids and let them get 'inspired' to create their own. The real question is, how long did it take to paint those eyes?

    You are internationally orientated!

Btw I thought it was a thing from my (long long gone) childhood but it seems they still make episodes after starting in 1971.

    Thanks!

I wouldn’t call these toys ugly, most are quite cute, though I’m sure the final product is probably not quite on par with the promo art. I just didn’t know where to put this. It’s more An over saturated trend I’ve noticed, which seems to be offered full force state side from My Plastic Heart. Looking at their new releases over the past several months I began to notice this trend, I’m not sure if all of these artists are Chinese, maybe some are from HK, Taiwan, etc. but there seem to be hundreds of these cute toys being made, many being animal inspired or wearing animal helmets, and many incorporating food themed elements. They are so identical to each other, while many are labeled coming from a different artist if no labels were there. I would think the bulk of these figures were coming from 1 designer.

    https://www.myplasticheart.com/shop-all/new-releases/

I’m admittedly not familiar with non Japanese Toy shows but these styled figures seem to also be very popular at shows like TTF.

I wouldn’t be bothered by these figures at all just based on their aesthetics, it’s more I’ve noticed so damn many of them all seemingly all done by a different designer, and I just don’t get it. How can you even establish a name or identity for yourself when you’re swimming in a school of fish all identical to you?

Yeah, while maybe not fugly (certainly there are some on that shop that could easily fit in this thread) it is all just so KR in its fare, I have no interest whatsoever. When there was finally a local 'toy show' here, I actually went and checked it out online, and this was the whole thing basically, outside of Dennis making an appearance. It's fine, just not my bag, and I sort of thing belongs in a different venue when/where such separation is possible.

I'm assuming @JoeMan is talking about these? Whenever I see this kind of crap the first thought that pops into my mind is "so this is what happens when you can just pay to produce the first lazy toy idea that pops into your head" followed by the second thought "the paint apps will be nowhere near this clean on the actual products"

I meant the myriad of cutesy animal headed and food toys that seem to be coming out, here are some new releases currently on My Plastic Heart, who seems to be always updating their site with an endless number of these.

Ugh, I can’t stand the cutesy trend. All these weird toy makers are jumping out of the woodwork. I guess it’s because designing a chubby animal is way easier than designing an original creature or kaiju. Just pick an animal out of a hand basket, chubby-fy it, put on a simple “cute” face, and boom! A brand new toy.

Like everything else, I think it's matter of picking out the good from the generic/bad. I've bought a few of those new non-JP vinyls from MPH, and I think they could stand with any of the cuter JP vinyl toys.

As well as some of these might be painted, they all look alike! The rainbow, neon, clashy, use every color on every fig sure is a thing...
A shelf-full of them would look like soup, I think! No one toy would stand out.

While I don’t necessarily mind a couple of these sculpts(i/e I have collected some Labubu), I can also completely understand why one who is into the more traditional kaiju art and toys not being super into these...I wouldn’t even classify it as such. Many keep doing similar color ways and it gets to be watered-down. Some of them I look at and go “but why?”
There seems to be an overflow lately of Pop Mart releases and while I was admittedly first interested(I draw cutesy cartoons for a living), I feel it is kind of turning into a homogenized mess of blind boxes and over-saturating the venue.
I feel like it IS a different market that maybe should be separate from kaiju...maybe it’s own sub genre.
