@Alebrije - Wow... what a beauty. First edition Marusan Ultraman in likely the best condition I have seen. The air bubbles around the neck also somewhat typical for early Marusan vinyl.

Considering the crazy prices of today, it doesn't seem like a bad price for how good the figure looks, as Mark says, the air bubbles in the neck is something that wouldn't bother me in the least because I've come to see it even in figures manufactured in later years.

Haha, seems like he got the 'Steve shine' treatment.

In all seriousness though, so lovely to see such a great example of the type A Ultra. Even with the unfortunate air bubbles around the neck (this is very early Marusan after all, so perhaps the process was just not down perfect yet), this is such a beauty. That is some incredibly clean paint if all original, which it would seem it was. I think outside of the red 'reverse' version, this is a pinnacle for most Ultraman and Marusan/Bullmark collectors. One of those sales to keep note of. Thanks for sharing this auction, Roger.

Hi Steve, do you think there is a possibility that the figure have been treated with baby oil so that the vinyl will shine more or even worse they use armor all.

You know, it is pure speculation on my part, but this particular toy - given it's age, and all other vintage toys I have seen in my years of the hobby - seems a bit overly shiny to me. Whether this was just a sharp buffing for the photos, a treatment to restore it, or something just temporary, who knows, but I do feel like, at least in the photos, it seems to be a bit more artificial than what I would normally expect. It wouldn't necessarily detract me from bidding on such a toy, but in spending that kind of money, it would be nice to know just what sort of thing these details entail. I definitely do tend to overanalyse photographs when toy shopping though! (and you should see me in person)

Marusan Godzilla silver generous both feet marked there time thing Soft Vinyl
    Went for: 501,000 yen

In itself it is rare to see a Goji with that amount of silver on the body and head, in addition to that it is a double stamp. Despite everything mentioned before the final price surprised me a lot and I know that Mark @deafmetal can tell us more about this piece.

Yes, that is indeed a beautiful example of a double stamp Goji. As you pointed out, the silver coverage on this guy is lovely, and I particularly love the fade as you go down the body right to having that nice stripe across the legs, and inside the arms. Subtly achieved, but wonderful. I think, for examples like this one, passionate collectors are willing to go that extra mile to have a lovely Godzilla for their collections, so when one comes up for sale I am not so surprised it ends fairly high.

@Alebrije - I feel that Steve has summarized this auction result very well. Although the vinyl color and silver paints are not rare and would be considered a standard run, many collectors desire an example with the heaviest possible amount of silver paints, especially covering the full head, neck, torso, and limbs like this one. Another factor is the luster and uniformity of the silver paint. I feel that this goji is a perfect example in this regard, and looks very lovely with the fades from smooth and thick silver paint into the dark blue vinyl. The silver paint is in almost immaculate condition with very little wear. I find it very interesting that these features appeal so much to many different collectors, even though it was probably just a random decision by the factory artist that day who felt that they had enough silver paint to "go a bit heavy" on these Gojiras, haha.

I would consider this to be a "condition-obsessed" auction, where the overall condition of the toy and paints is heavily prized. There is an obvious paint chip out of the red and black paints out of the right eye, but that said, I have only seen a couple of these examples with such heavy silver paint, and this one is one of the best I have ever seen. The Marusan double foot engravings are an additional bonus as well that drives up the bids. I imagine if there were black ink markings on the bottom of the feet that the winning bid would be half or less of the final result. I thought that paint chip would have kept the price lower, but there were at least two other bidders throwing down monster bids at this one after I had already dropped out. I have seen other examples like this sell for ~100-300k yen based on condition.

Thank you for you reply guys @ultrakaiju, @deafmetal.
Mark thank you for delving into the subject so much, if I remember correctly a few years ago a member of the board wanted to buy a similar Goji with a lot of silver spray on the body in Kobe toy store for $ 1,200 USD and with the help of some board members They negotiated the price up to $ 900 USD unlike this specimen I think it was not double stamped and the blue vinyl was a bit lighter.

WOW, I love the balloon blowers and have never seen any Ultraman characters. I have seen the Godzilla, Baragon, and Guilala, though. What others do we know of?

This Red King balloon blower is new to me as well. Marusan either reissued or created a modern Gamera version, but I have not see any evidence of a vintage version. It's very interesting that the circle SAN logo is intentionally damaged/removed from the mold, and is barely legible above the JAPAN engraving. This seems to be the case on every vintage balloon blower I have seen. The original header art also does not have any Marusan or SAN logo.

^ I don't pine for those pins, but they make me happy every time that I see them!

I'll take any excuse to post this again, too:

Not quite as enticing, but still a gang that I'd be happy to offer lodging to in their time of need.

The bowling set is always a ton of fun. I don't know if I would invest that much in them, as that would buy me a whole heck of a pile of equally beat up vintage figures, but like David, I cannot help but smile every time I see them. Such a weird mashup/re-use of soft vinyl toys, and I have very little doubt I would have been quite happy to bowl these guys over as a kid.... for a day or two, after which I'd probably go back to just playing with the monster figures. :)

I don't think the Yamakatsu Ultraman kaiju bowling set sold. It's been relisted at the same opening bid amount.

A hefty investment, but that is actually quite a nice assortment of toys. I've often pined after many of those Henshin heroes especially.

These were a few auction lots which came up recently too that I found very interesting and was watching closely. Yes, these are largely broken, missing, and junk toys, but I guess I have a particular soft spot for the misfit toys out there maybe (which most of my collection will attest to, ha!). I am sure more people will scoff at these figures, given their conditions. Even that aside though, there are a few hidden gems in these, which someone could have taken the opportunity to seize for a shot at a prized figure. I was actually hoping they would have ended up a little bit lower - and confess to being the cause to some of that at least - but I guess I was not the only one who saw some value in these odd mishap groupings.

Lot 1, featuring giant Kamen Rider v3

Lot 2, featuring giant Iron King figure
    https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g382032766

Lot 3, featuring giant Redman figure (ouch, this one sort of smarted, even with the damaged mask)

Lot 4, featuring removable mask Ultraseven

PS - I am not sure why this seller was so interested in photographing the feet [especially]

PPS - It IS a real pity that this childhood owner was so fond of the felt marker

It's wild how high the bids went for the Megalon with the crack in the arm. It really shows the popularity of these rare Bullmark kaiju. Looking back on the results of the Vinyl Conflict/Peekaboo auction, I'd say the winners of those two Megalon did very well considering how lovely the condition was on both of those examples.

There were several pieces of that auction that would seem to me sold for a good price, I don't want to say what they were cheap but in a comparison of the last auctions in YJP some were sold for a lower price.
Mark by chance do you have the images of the Vinyl Conflict/Peekaboo auction with the final prices?
