Oh, for fuck's sake... I thought, "nope, it's not even worth the effort to type it out", but okay, here we go: the fucking chest design on the guy on the left above. I'm talking specifically about the three studs & snaking cable arrangement on each breastplate. WHAT in the actual fuck. Not only off-puttingly ugly, but total design thoughtlessness on display- makes no internal sense whatsoever. DUMB as fook.

It's like someone tried to reference the nipples on the Ark King Kong diecast toy. BUT LETS MAKE IT 6X COOLER!

Obviously, there’s humorous/fanciful elements to these designs that takes them outside of the tight/clean design rigor of, say, a typical no-nonsense mobile suit. But you can be fanciful and still have the design aspects make well-imagined/engineered functional sense, in the context of the “story” your sculpt is presenting. (There’s more leeway, of course, if you’re doing an outright janky/silly/garbagey robot sculpt that announces itself as such at first glance… but these are not that.)

The problem here is that the designer did not make a clear decision as to whether the chest plates are functional or ornamental. If functional, the shapes and positioning of the pyramids gives no impression that they are projectiles… so you’d have to assume they are a sort of defensive surface (“OOOOHHHH! Samurai Robutt just delivered another one of his pointy-chested bear hugs! That had to hurt, Mean Gene!”), or just an ornamental armor surface. Either way, why the fuck is that cable snaking between them?? (“Excuse me, fellas- just passin’ through!”) A vulnerable power or hydraulic component popping up from within to make an appearance smack in the middle of a surface apparently intended for contact/impact? I even tried generously to imagine that the cable is meant to supply power to the pyramids, and in turn they charge up and start to glow and each emits a beam from its tip and these join up into one superbeam at the centerpoint and look out folks it’s lasertitties time and… and… no. No, though it could have been, no actual visual case is made for that. It really seems to be just, “Good robot designs feature cables. Where can we shoehorn in a couple cables on this one?”

Overall, it’s a highly inelegant, square-pegs-in-round-holes focal point in a sculpt that's trying to capitalize on the formal elegance of samurai armor.

I want these toys to get off my lawn NOW.
(harrumphs, slams screen door; crosses arms and continues to hate-squint at the toys through his bifocals)

If your feet are tank treads why do you need legs to walk?

It's a shame because I think Aaron is capable of making some fun cool toys but he's just gone NUTS on over-producing. His first toy, the black ace, was over-produced but a lot less so where I felt if he went simpler he would be making pretty cool 80s style fighting robots. But goddamn, just throw a spike on everything where you don't already have a skull

that style toy just doesnt seem to lend itself well to the super fun paint apps on the vintage stuff we know and love! so when they try it falls flat imo

I think there’s just too much going on in a lot of the designs, and too strict of detailed paint apps, that slip most of these toys into action figure territory. The only one I’ve seen that makes it work is Mirock. He manages to sculpt insanely fine tuned details into his toys, but doesn’t go overbearing on the paint apps to the point it becomes a chore on the eyes.

Agree, Mirock fully pulls it off. His paints make his toys look like relics carved all of a piece out of some alien mineral. He consistently chooses colors and spray schemes that manage to highlight, and not obscure, all of that delicious detail. Not easy. There are many examples of Guumon's signature paint apps having achieved this, as well.

It’s also not easy to make stuff. I fully, personally understand and respect that. In my screed above about the chest plate, I tried to be thoughtful/substantive in my art criticism, even while snarking a bit. I care about these things. But I just went in and took out the “DUUUHHH” I had in there. Lazily witless and unnecessary, bad form on my part.

Yes it is. This is why you never take off a toy's clothes.

I've been meaning to post this here for awhile, but keep forgetting.. Anyway, here's one for the books of "fugliest toys" I've ever come across. And in person no less.. This was at the Mandarke toy rally on my trip to Japan back in May.

Don't get me wrong, it's very well done and all and the details are realistically grotesque. But certainly not something I'd ever personally consider purchasing for my collection. It was a little over $800 USD.

The artist I believe is "LioncToy" and was a very nice fellow.

More like a statue than a toy. I also don’t get the one in the wheelchair either...
