No worries. That bit wasn't directed at you (or anyone in particular). Apology unnecessary but appreciated nonetheless.

In broad strokes just griping about the ever-diminishing regard for those who can't/don't watch stuff in real time. Google's homepage stunt has made that abundantly clear (they pulled the same shit again with the last ep of Preacher).

Prefer to let shows build up and binge once the season ends, but it's getting increasingly harder to do. TWD & GoT were the first exceptions since the internet becomes a spoiler minefield immediately after they air. Seems more and more shows are now following suit. Kudos to Netflix for the whole season release method and letting viewers watch in whatever fashion they choose.

Writers couldn't think of one out of the many other sellsword companies for Cersie to hire?

Huh. Can't believe nobody has bumped this up yet. Could it be that you all were just as underwhelmed as I was?

If they wanted to show that much dragon riding, they should’ve kept the same number of episodes this season :?

    My sentiments exactly.

Wasn't underwhelmed either, but the standard season opener could've wasted less time with the superfluous bs ie: the "whole new world" dragon ride and everything Euron-related (can he fucking die already?). In past seasons it would've been fine, but with 5 eps left, those precious minutes could've been better spent elsewhere... like the "hit Sam with some heavy shit with zero time to process because it's time to hit Jon with some heavy shit" scene. Still not a Sam fan, but that bit felt criminally rushed.

Mixed thoughts on the new title sequence. Figured the wall would be changed to reflect the current developments, but the complete overhaul was jarring to say the least. Cool and all, but to break continuity with such a drastic change for this abbreviated final season, it really stands out as a stark (pun?) reminder of what the show once was to what it has become... for better or worse.

Also felt like the only scene of the entire 58 minutes that moved the story forward.

I think a large reason for my being underwhelmed stems from being so jaded over the books. But I was still really into the show despite GRRM's assholery. But then HBO came out and said the final season would only be 6 episodes! That was probably where my interest first started to wain. Oh, but they're all going to be movie-length, they said. Okay, okay, that might make up for a short season. But then what do we get in Ep1? Fifty-eight minutes? Movie-length my ass! And they damn near spent the entirety of it making a reunion show.

Eh - I'm just feeling rather curmudgeonly about it. It use to be my favorite show, but there are better shows out there.

All good points brought up, re: dragon riding, runtime and Euron (urine?)... I plan on finishing the show, but I realized Sunday, when I was reminded that the last new episode was in mid 2017, that I had lost interest. It was too long a wait, and I kinda forgot about GOT amidst all the other good media out there.

And all I kept thinking while watching the episode was “Jon Snow is the only one making any sense. Why won’t anyone listen to him? THE. ARMY. OF. THE. DEAD. IS. COMING. who gives a shit who’s king or queen!” But I guess in that aspect, got truly captures the human condition.

I haven't watched the new episode yet but I will, I'm just not in a hurry to see it. For me the show jumped the shark a season or so ago. The reason i liked GOT in the earlier days was it took time to build strong characters and situations, it was finely crafted (well, as much as an ongoing TV show could be). More recently it feels rushed like they are racing to finish it early, like they are trying to cram too much in.

I think, maybe, when they blew up the sept that's where things went off the rails and it was clear they were rushing towards an ending. They wrapped up a lot of loose ends with that move. And loose ends that I felt could have been involved with a much more interesting ending than the one we seem destined to receive.

Well, much as the show has had free rein, I think the 'jumping the shark' bit is really a direct consequence of them being 'freed' from the plotlines of the books. I will be transparent here, I am coming into this as a fan of the novels, but honestly the GoT show was really an excellent companion piece to that in its own right. But HBO/the writers definitely got swept up in their own desire to (1) push the boundaries even more [let's face it, no one ever succeeds in constantly outdoing themselves], (2) trying, I think, to differentiate the show from books even more (whether that was a direct message or response to requests from Martin, and (3) being swallowed in their own hype - this is definitely the case of the snake dragon eating its own tail. I will finish the season, of course, but honestly, as has been said already, with such scant hours left in what has become a massive saga - and I have been saying this for a few seasons now - I cannot grasp why the timewasting with all that fluff, if not just for lack of creativity or plain effort. Also, it really irks me to no end how so many offshoots are 'in development.' Hey HBO (and Martin, for that matter) let's just work on finishing what we've got ongoing properly, before dropping that and heading off in another direction.

I only started GOT about a month or so ago. Never saw a episode, so i wasn’t invested into it year after year like some i know. I got to just binge it, i feel the ending is going to be very crammed in a sense. If I’m not mistaken, since the first episode “winter is coming”... they have been talking about the night king coming for some time now... and yes the wall is now down... but it seems the real battle will start i he next week or 2, and then you got 4-5 episodes for that to take place, and wrap it up. Yeah, it seems rushed. But also at the same time. Bran has literally grown up on screen.

I think 2 episodes (definitely one full episode) will be just the battle with the Night King's Army. They said they spent like 50 nights alone just filming the battle..there's no way to cleanly wrap up most of the storylines, so the best we can hope for is closure thats not shoehorned in. Seems like GRRM will never finish the books at this point either.

So, another one down the drain? Sir Brienne made an otherwise unremarkable episode have some feels. So far I find that she and Jamie are the only ones I care about. Starting to root for the Night King.

Ha. I liked this episode a little better than the first; I felt it captured the mood of “this might be our last night alive” pretty honestly... my biggest concern is that with Cersei still in kings landing, we’ll have two endings. Whatever the outcome is in the north, which should be the emotional end to the story- now at least one episode has to be spent with the victors of the battle of the north head to kings landing to face Cersei. With just 4 episodes it’s a lot of ground to cover.

Cersei has to get her karma. I hope they bring a few crates of night walkers to clean up and then, clean up the Night Walkers after they've done their work.

Wonder how Sir Gregor fits into the ending if at all?

The next episode is going to be fucking bananas.

going to be interesting to see who makes it out alive of episode 3. i think Brienne's scene was also her farewell scene. I'm assuming she dies protecting Jamie this week. Like everyone is saying, so much ground to cover in just 4 episodes.

Yep, 100%. I have to admit the 2nd episode was a cracker. More Tyrion is always a good move, and Arya possibly stole the episode. I'm back in for the last push. The updated title sequence was cool as well . . .

So, clearly, a zombie battle is coming up, but perhaps not the final one..
I bet S8E3 will first take a side trip to have Cersei show off her baby bump and such. Maybe some new anti-wight magic made by the Reanimator and it's gonna be so effective that the Targaryans + Starks will absolutely must have it for THE FINAL BATTLE.. it should have something to do with wild fire, whatever that is.. Also, the good guys at Winterfell(?) will lose one or more mini bosses to the dead army.. I personally would like to see a Tyrion+Arya combo paired up against the living.

But.. while I am looking forward to more dragon action, zombie shenanigans, I cannot for the life of me (pun intended..;) figure out what the dead army would do if they won. I mean, all the living are converted, then what? You sit around, patting yourself on whatever left of your decaying shoulder and say: job? well.. done.

I dunno, while I thought it was certainly an improvement over the first episode, I still feel like it didn't quite suit expectations (which are admittedly high) given how little is left of the entire ASOIAF story. I thought this was the most 'realistic' episode, which was totally great, but at the same time, I did feel that this was very contrary to what GoT has shown us all along with respect to the characterisation. The 'might be our last night alive' really rang true, so good on all the actors for bringing that together, but somehow this felt like all those moments we might have gotten in a novelisation but which are dropped from the show in order to advance the more key/visible medium-focused plot developments. I loved it, it was the GoT real world which frankly has been lacking, but still ate up a good portion of the episode. And, as much as Arya and Gendry is totally fine and grand, I thought playing the whole scene out was really not necessary. If there is one thing the show can sacrifice for the sake of brevity it's unnecessary gratuitousness.

I am of course interested to see where this all goes, but am probably in the minority in I don't really care all that much about seeing a whole (or even two :?) epic battle episodes. I would be quite happy to see them cut to the end, and focus on the other stuff; but I highly concur as well there will be some major deaths coming in the near future, so this will form part of that. Jaime/Ser Brienne are strong possibilities; I could see either one in defense of the other, but quite possibly the latter if Bronn does show up to earn his money. One thing I am not so keen on is preparing not to see anything in the next episode. I know it is the north, and dark, and the whole things is supposed to be foreboding, but could we get some lighting? ;) The song was great, and could have been a fan nod, or [at a big stretch] a sign of more important things. As for Targaryen v. Targaryen, I have been sort of saying all along that this would be exactly in line with Martin's trope subversion which has been such a main theme of them entire series. I am not saying it will necessarily come down to this, but as the show especially has gone more and more into the realms of 'traditional' fantasy, especially along the lines of Jon's story, I could easily see this being the major conflict which actually ends the show. I think the foreshadowing is there, and especially as the 'love' aspect has been so quickly advanced in the show. Or, you know, we might just get a sappy happy ending for all; I guess it depends on how much leeway HBO gives B&B with it, but they have certainly been known to allow more controversial endings - which I think would be a great way for this to go out, if done correctly.

Quite a few more musings, but looking forward to the next digestion anyways.
