The fugliest toys you have seen while collecting.

I don't think that's accurate at all. She is a collector but she has been drawing her own designs for quite awhile. This one is supposed to be the alien version of a pomeranian but it is undoubtedly designed and drawn by her own hand. I think it looks pretty cool but I realize that it's coming from someone who collects and loves lots of designer vinyl and other toy things that SB automatically shits all over. It doesn't look like the stuff SB likes but I don't think it's supposed to.

I have no opinion about whether or not it looks like some other specific toy because no one showed the toy they said it looked like.

Here are the toys that I think it looks similar to. The proportions and face instantly reminded me of these two specifically..

I'm certainly not trying to "shit all over" it. Its obvious (I think?) that its not made for peoples tastes on this board, thats not why I posted it.. I posted because it is in fact an ugly toy, that relates to the topic of this thread.

And I was curious in seeing if I wasn't the only one to see similarities.

I’ve noticed a pattern that a lot of collectors go though.

They get into toys, they eventually find their way to sofubi ( not getting into the logistics of the word anymore, pretty sure we can understand what sofubi covers). Over time they either come to collect a core group of artist and carry on enjoying and fostering a collection. Or they decided they also want to be a toy maker and start down that path. Sadly the latter leads a lot to stop collecting, if their toy doesn’t do well they stop altogether.

I’ve seen so many over the years decide to toss their hat into the toy game without any history in toys ( customs, etc. ) they can be great visual artist but many lack experience in toys yet feel they want to invest so much into it. I don’t get it. I truly wish everyone well, esp knowing how hard it truly is. I just don’t get why they want to.

Why do so many people decide they need to make a toy without knowing what to even do with it, or who to sell it to once they have spent well over thousands of dollars getting it made.

Do people just think a fan base will come out of nowhere ? Or it looks so easy they can do it also ? Do they feel their designs are just better ? Do they want to be part of the long line of makers also ? Do they have extra cash and just want to do it because they can ? Did collecting others get boring ? I don’t know.

I truly do wish everyone the best, the more makers with original ideas the better. But unless they have built a fan base that would want their art toys, it’s just gonna take away from the already small well of fans and customers. If people get something that’s not of high quality they might be scared to buy from another, and eventually get out altogether.

    Just some random thoughts.

Substitute toys with "music" or "writing" or any other creative endeavor.

So I guess it just human nature than.

Although I’ve never felt the want to peruse anything I didn’t feel I had any business doing. And usually that’s everything since my go to is I suck.

What bugs me is new toy makers having no idea of any of the history of the sofubi world yet feeling that they need to contribute... Any good genre musician recognizes who came before and acknowledges the work upon which they build. Otherwise, it feels like cashing in, even if well-intentioned.

I feel this comment describes a lot of the newer sculpts going around. Way too much detail that screams digitally sculpted (of course, thats just my opinion, some people love that kinda stuff).

From the side and behind it looks like E.T. to me. That short and squat body that a lot of these makers are favoring. Also, this line in her spiel came out of nowhere - It might not eat you if u masturbate it. I'm not sure if she's trying to be cute or edgy, or both.

Also, I think those are the most pointless extra arms ive seen on a monster toy.

Come on, Isn't this space harrier?
It looks cheap and that face is a bit nuts. But this brings back memories of Round table pizza and their small arcade

@Rich I think a lot of artists (mainly illustrators) who've never sculpted a toy but who are collectors, want to create something a bit more tangible. I think it would be awesome to have my own toy that I designed and I don't draw or sculpt. But I can't imagine a world where I'd make money and survive off of that. I've been a working performing artist my whole life. I grew up with professional artist parents. And we were (are) always broke. It takes equal parts talent, luck and connections to make a living as an artist. No real fast forward on it (unless you're super hot)
There are a lot of new toy artists coming out of the wood work, and a lot of them look to be collectors. I certainly think these "new" toy makers need to charge less. Let experience and talent be your hype man. Not making people re-post, making 5-off, crazy ass colorways and charging 500 hundred bucks.
boy, I haven't even had any caffeine yet, I'm in a chatty mood.

Yeah everything has a belly face or a tongue coming out of a fat roll, and let's add a chest burster coming out of the arm for no reason and a random lion face....and this lamp.

That is pretty much a perfect toy. Licensed and it looks exactly like the source material which happens to be one of the best video games ever made. GeekLife is slowly becoming one of the coolest licensed brands in both the vinyl and keshi world. The vinyl altered beast boss was incredible and the keshi figure from Golden Axe was one of the best mini sculpts I have ever seen. If they'd just stop putting front pockets on their t-shirts I'd be all in.

sorry.. but, this is fuckin' awesome.
Trying to make a living off of art is hard.
If artists can't think for themselves, develop new ideas that are fun to talk about, possible to execute, and are affordable... they are doing them selves a disservice.
I dont listen to daft criticisms. I am my own worst critic.

As negative as this thread can be at times I think it's a good pool to dip the toe in every once in awhile. To gauge what people are into, or.... NOT INTO.

It is. Made by Geek Life, who makes a bunch of licensed SEGA toys. Someone cropped out those details for some reason...

I'm fine with this toy but the fact that it would be completely impossible to display really gets my goat!

Be like a fun floaty toy, like you'd see on a male only ocean cruse. :)

Because I'm a glutton for punishment. My wallet, too. But in all seriousness, seeing a two-dimensional creation suddenly take a three-dimensional shape and get decent responses from individuals is quite a feeling that can not be duplicated. And being a hard nosed critic on myself means I just want to keep going and eventually (hopefully) become better at the craft. I don't like sitting on my hands. That's just my view.

@3wing I found the next accessory to go with your couchubi, cuz if you won't I will. Does a stone lantern count cuz I'm already racking my brain over that one...

The drawing of that alien thing looks way better than the sculpt imo, so much symmetry in the sculpt makes it look static and boring.
    Still, not my thing.

It’s like these new makers want to pass GO, collect $200. (Or should I say, $500?) If you’re a first time creator, why would you go straight to sofubi, unless you want the money so bad? Go try resin, try cheaper factory vinyl, make sure you will have an audience before you put thousands on the line for the soft vinyl process. But in this collecting climate, people will buy anything... It just rewards people who continually barf out new sculpts.

Blegh I’m rambling, but you get the point... kind of?

And @3wing , if you’re looking for suggestions, how about buildings and skyscrapers? My toys need a city to destroy.
