Hey All, I'm going to Mexico City for the first time for NYE and would love some recs if you have any. I'll be staying in the Roma Norte/Condesa area for about a week. Into no frills food spots, dive bars, low key stuff and local art (+ toy ) scenes! Thanks in advance.
You are in for a GREAT time! @chimmychazz had some excellent recommendations for me and I'm sure others will chime in. I was there last month for the first time and this is what we did: 1. Anthropology Museum is a MUST - you could easily spend all day there 2. Castle at Chapultepec 3. Frida's House and the studio she shared with Diego Rivera- two different place and both worth checking out. Her house was much cooler than I thought it would be. If you know when you want to go there it would be good to make a reservation online. 4. The ruins at Teotihucuan - we took an Uber there and convinced him to stay while we walked around. The ruins are about 45 mins outside of the city 5. Diego Rivera's mural museum 6. Go to the Zocolo and have a drink at the rooftop bar at the Gran Hotel overlooking the square. - I won't go back to Mexico City without doing this There's an amazing toy museum there that we didn't get to check out. I also wish we had gone and seen lucha libre. I've also been told that the folk ballet is fantastic. Unfortunately the timing didn't work out for us. We took Uber everywhere and I can't understate how fantastic that was. Eat as much street food as you can! We also got a reservation at Pujol. That was great if you're a foodie of any sort.
I can attest to the awesomeness of the toy museum. It’s located inside an old school and each room is jam packed with toys. Everything from vintage barbies to Mexican blow molds, you can easily spend a few hours in there. There’s also a shop with some toys for sale where I managed to pick up a few fun things. Try to hit a lucha show. Both the actual event and the drunken Mexican dudes having their own wrestling match a few seats over were a lot of fun. Besides the great cheap food at the various markets and on the street, my favorite meals were at Pujol, Maximo Bistrot, and Contramar. And yes, Charlie gave me many of the recommendations and I’m sure will chime in with many more. Have a blast, Mexico city is amazing!
I'm glad your visiting CDMX maybe @kopponigen can chime here, he lives there some of my recommendations -Museo del Juguete Antiguo (antique toy museum) -Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (they have some fridas in their collection) if you drink go to Pulqueria Los Insugentes for Pulque, (prehispanic agave alcoholic beverage) La Botica (for mezcal) La nacional (for mezcal, tequila and cocktails) the Omakase Tacos menu at Pujol is really good
I recommend a walking tour of street art, pay for a guide or do a self guided tour. Lots of good art that changes constantly.
Amazing looking recommendations already, thank you all! Toy Museum looks really awesome and would love to find a lucha show. Definitely will be booking at Pujol - now to decide between the Taco Omakase or Tasting Menu...
I would recommend the full tasting menu as opposed to the taco omakase as it’s a more complete representation of what they offer. The 1581 day old mole Madre was a highlight and I don’t think you get to try that if you chose the taco omakase. I also tried a pechuga mezcal made made with a rabbit as opposed to the normal chicken version which was mind blowingly complex and delicious. Since I work in a well known nyc restaurant we also got a tour of the kitchen and garden which was really special. We went for lunch and the whole experience lasted around 5 hours. Really exceptional.
I got the Mole with the omakase, plated the same as the regular menu, was the last savory plate, cant remember how many day was when I went, if you ask they let you in the kitchen and you can have the dessert at the garden
