Just texted the boyfriend, he spent a summer session in Shanghai back in college. He suggests: The Bund Nanjing Road Lots of museums
Thanks guys. I'm looking for toys though. There are so many collectors and makers in China now. I was hoping some of it might spill into Shanghai. ...and I'm well versed in that IKEA.
Have you tried writing directly to any of the makers yet, @uh oh? The scene seems pretty HK focused but, as we know, enthusiasts tend to cast as wide a net as possible. I'd be surprised if, say, someone from Awesome Toy wouldn't be able to let you know some news, good or bad, on your prospects in Shanghai.
I have worked in Shanghai for a while and really had the time to look for stuff that interests me - toys, music etc - sadly without any luck.
What's the hk scene u guys speak of? I was just over there and barely found any kaiju. Angel Abby is never open and they wouldn't even respond to my emails,, they suck! Other than that,, there's a bunch of hyped medicom stuff and some kaws and the likes in Kowloon, but barely any sofubi to speak of (at least the stuff I collect). I picked up a few of the vag Anraku guys and a couple random kewpies I came across, but was that was about it.
@toothaction My wife changed jobs so I'm here looking for work. Trying to use my experience to help other make toys. @gazpacho I think the HK scene is mostly makers. They've had a few shows and Vintage Vinyl Club and Angel Abby I think are there.
Have you gotten in touch with @Jtsui1105 ? Unless he's moved, pretty sure he is still in Shanghai. There was another boardie in China but not in Shanghai. Old age kicking in and I'm forgetting who it is.
I think there could even be a couple (in China that is). And I have a feeling there are probably still more accounting for a lot of those 'unused' SB accounts, that might just lurk, for language reasons or whatever. I know Ricky (@bonemask) is in HK, but isn't so active on the board anymore. Not sure if that is who you were thinking of maybe.
I may travel to Shanghai and Beijing next fall. Won't be looking for toys, my trip will be too short for that, but I'll be on the lookout for localy made cymbals
@gatchabert Thanks Bert! @ultrakaiju Thanks! I know Bonemask. I don't think he posts here any more though. @Jtsui1105 Let me know if you ever want to meet up. Kind of bored most days. @nefasth What cymbals are made here? Let me know if you want to meet up when you slide through. I could look at some gongs.
Are there anyone from SB still in Shanghai? I've been here for about a year - would love to meet some of the SBers that are in Shanghai!
While I was in Shanghai last year my friend tried taking me to a store with a bunch of Kaiju, but unfortunately it was closed during that time. They had a bunch of Kanegon in the display window. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name...
Ah right the place by People's Square? It's called Amakuma, you've gotta hit them up before hand set a time to drop by
