    OMG.
There are so many weeds in our yard, it’s ridiculous.
Apparently wild dandelions are a delicacy. People also use them for some kind of acne treatment. I’m going to pick the shit out of them and try to sell them on craigslist.

You can turn them into wine.

I'm a home brewer and I made a Dandelion wine 2 years ago, came out pretty good! They only add flavor though, they aren't actually fermented themselves. Should go without saying, DON'T use Dandelions for anything unless you are 100% certain they haven't been contaminated by pesticides or weedkillers. IDK why people despise these tiny yellow flowers so much!

I know a dog that can take care of those for you. : D

Note to lawn scaping dog owners:
Avoid planting flowers with bone meal , or just accept the risk that your previously well behaved dog may go “dig” crazy.

For a visual reference, here’s my previous post - http://skullbrain.org/bb/index.php?threads/are-there-any-gardeners-out-there.51949/#post-952314

First holes she’s ever dug. That picture shows just 1 of 2 crime scenes, but it was the same story at each. She had to have that bone meal, baby.

Does anyone have any organic recommendations for killing off white flies and aphids. They are especially bad this year, sucking the roses dry! :x I usually use a mixture of dish soap with water and lemon juice, but this year, it just isn't getting rid of them! :x After pests suck out the fluids from the leaves and flowers, they expel a sweet sticky substance that starts mold growing on leaves and also rotting, then ants :x Argh!

I don't want to use pesticides, because I have a lot of critters visiting the garden, and I don't want to kill off the helpful insects.

How about Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap?

I've used it to stop pests n my cannabis plants before..

    Good luck on your quest!

Ok, still trying to kill off those pesky white flies, who are really destroying the roses. The Dr. Bronners soap helped for awhile (thanks Noel), but then they seemed to get over it, despite multiple repeat spraying :x. Same for neem oil, so I've exhausted the organic route. Has anyone tried the multi purpose plant food and pesk control? I really want to save the plants, because they were left to me by my Mom.

I figured if i have to resort to an insecticide, this is a more controlled approach, and less hazardous in terms of handling, mixing, spraying, and breathing in the yuckies. My major concern is I'm wondering if it would hurt bees and hummingbirds? The hummers love the purple salvia. I've read reviews that conflicts each other, so I'm not sure which is true. Does anyone have any first hand experience using this? Thank you

Have you tried lady bug bombs for aphids? Not sure if they go after white flies as well but I know they will eat the hell out of aphids. There are a bunch of Euphorbia plants around my house with Aphids all over them and one day we noticed freakish lady bug babies in all the flowers just going ham on the aphids, there were 1000s of them.

And if anyone hasn't seen what a baby ladybug looks like before it goes through the metamorphosis into a cute little normal lady bug it's worth a google, totally bizarre little critters.

Also in a fun/gross aphid fact, I found out a little while ago ants herd aphids like cattle and protect them so they can milk their weird aphid nectar, if you see a bunch of aphids you'll probably find some ants rounding them up and milking them. Gardens are crazy!

Hello Count! Yes, I knew about aphids and ants, sort of amusing thinking of ants as "farmers" :)
    https://www.thoughtco.com/aphid-herding-ants-1968237

We have tons of lady bugs, and the larvae are rabid feeders

unfortunately, they are not effective against white flies, which are particularly hard to get rid of, and really destructive :x The aphids can be controlled by the soap method very effectively, and the neem oil is even better on aphids. Sort of at a loss with the white flies, this is the second season I've had to deal with them, and they are particularly bad this time. I'll try out the Bayer multipurpose pest control plant food on one plant first. Hopefully I won't see dead bees (I really really really love bumble bees! They're so fuzzy and cute!)

BTW, if you are wandering through the garden in the early evening hours, and see a still bumble on the floor, a quick feed of honey usually resuscitates them back to life, and it's surprising how effective a quick feed can be. Place a small amount of honey on a leaf, and try to introduce the honey, gently, to the "mouth" area of the bee--they usually get the hint, if there is any remaining energy left to help them get back on their feet. Then watch them "unroll" their tongue, and slowly slurp up the honey. I keep a small squeeze jar of honey in the basement :)

Ok, I am NOT going to use the combination plant food - pest control - fungicide. Turns out it will harm the "good" bugs as well as the bad bugs, and may even effect birds too (i.e. the hummingbirds love to drink from the Salvia flowers). Even if people say it won't, the fact that it's clearly labeled on the container, "do not apply to edible plants and trees" has got to mean, if you poison your apple trees and veggies, it's going to poison you. Why else would the manufacturer caution against using it on edibles?!? Ah well, I guess I'll just have to live with scraggly roses :( (but have happy bees, ladybugs, and birdies! :D)

Well here we are, it’s a new growing season!

What are you guys growing this year?

I’m keeping it light because between work, our baby and chores, I won’t have much spare time like I’ve had in years past.

This year I’m using my Earthboxes to grow:
    Tomatoes
    Armenian Cucumbers
    Shishito Peppers
    Bell Peppers
    Acorn Squash
    Butternut Squash
    String Beans
    Strawberries

I’ll be starting everything from seedlings except the string beans which will be grown from seeds from my beans last year.

Have any of you ever grown strawberries in containers? I’ve never had much luck considering you get a much bigger harvest in year two. My plan is to plant them in Earthboxes and let the runners fall to the ground around the box. Hopefully next year they’ll come back! Any tips, tricks or feedback would be appreciated!

Try and mix a bit of vegetable oil in with the detergent. For your white oil spray.

@GERMS that sounds like an interesting recipe! I'll give it a try! The aphids are really sucking the roses dry this year!

Yep, I just don't get it! There is a large cluster of abandoned rose bushes growing wild on an archery range I practice on. No one takes care of them, not one spot of aphids on them, beautiful, verdant, and crawling all over the grounds--the blossoms are gi-normous (they look like artichokes!). What am I doing wrong?! :x:x:x
