I need to mention how sick I am of Star Wars in keeping with the original theme of the thread. The cross-promotion alone everywhere is enough to make you want to blow your brains out!

Aw man. Kinda cool but the lead actor and actress' bad acting (constantly at the point of laughing) ruin it.

Weird, because I can think of no less than 5 and a half Star War pitchurs that I'd rate well below it. 8 and a half if you count the '90s versions.

    Give us your rant, sir!

Sorry but Phantom Menace will forever hold that honor. Jar Jar nuff said.

Yes, Last Jedi left a lot to be desired... but not sure if Rian Johnson is entirely to blame. Being kind, I'd give it a C+

You are being kind. The writing in this movie lacks substance and is filled with “because” storytelling. On top of that there are three characters that are introduced merely to be used as story vehicles and nothing more. The bullshit fanboy gripes aside it’s poorly written and poorly thought out. The story had countless ways it could have gone to reach its end game without resulting to sophomoric and frankly base level problem solving. It’s like he was trying so hard to not do things people had thought of that he in turn did things that are completely incohesive with the overall narrative of the franchise. The more I think about this movie the more disappointed I get.

Same here... and the too-kind rating gets worse the more time spent reflecting on it.
How the movie is scoring a 93% from critics on RT is beyond me.

As a big fan of Rian Johnson's prior movies, it's a bitter pill to swallow that LJ was ultimately a big disappointment. Here's to hoping Abrams rights the ship and ends things on a high note... if that's even possible at this point.

    I loved it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

While it wasn't the best Star Wars movie I've seen, the joy and excitement shared with the audience is such an incredible feeling. I saw the same energy in theaters for Force Awakens with fans new + old coming together for the pure love of the franchise and to me thats what its all about. Some badass lightsaber battles, wild alien species and moody Kylo are all I need!

But then again, something must be wrong with me because I seriously just added this Kubrick to my want list

I agree, I'm just not getting what everyone is so upset about. I enjoyed the hell out of it!

EDIT: now that I'm reading the beefs out there, while I don't disagree with them and noticed most of them myself, I guess they just didn't bother me the way they did other watchers.

Seriously! It's a Star Wars movie - they all had major cheese and annoyances and issues! As long as they don't totally suck like Ep 1-3, I enjoy them for what they are.

Corporate Product. I'll still go see it, even though my expectations are low.

It's definitely a good corporate product if were gonna be labeling it that.

By the way, Netflix just released the first few episodes of " The Toys That Made Us". The first episode is all about the history and creation of the Kenner Star Wars line and how it eventually carries on over to Hasbro. It's a great documentary for those that want to know a little more about the production of the vintage toys and beyond. They even talk about the fuck up with the Phantom Menace line lol.

    Saw it yesterday. Not happy.
I liked it for its Star Warsness, aka Stormtroopers, lightsabers, battle scenes, at-at’s etc...

Then the shitty one liners kick in. The unnecessary “I love you” type bullshit.

It’s almost as if they took parts 4,5,6 and made some awful Readers Digest condensed version.

Then the part when the guys are in the trenches, In front of the rebel base, and you went “oh cool it looks like Hoth” and the guy reaches out and tastes the white stuff on the ground, shrugs and basically looks into the camera and goes “salt”. Just so you know someone had an original idea(sarcasm) and not just recycling something. Which would have been fine with me, I love Empire, best episode to me.

Seems like a good way to identify a foreign substance coating the ground of an alien world...

To be fair, the rebels had clearly lived on the planet for an extended period of time in the past, so it probably wasn't a deadly substance.

This was the first SW movie I didn't get to see on opening day since A New Hope in '77 (had the flu on opening night, this time out). Finally went to see yesterday- managed to stay delightfully, near-perfectly spoiler-free leading up to.
    I loved it.

Pretty much exactly what I said to my brother who hated it. My criteria for these new movies is - was it much better than any of the shitty prequals? Yes it was, even with all its faults (which were plenty). I just decided to let that go. It was far from perfect but it was undeniably a fun movie, more good than bad overall.

Yeah, I'm firmly in this camp too... Some people expect way, way too much from Star Wars.

I tried to like Rose and failed. And the contingency of her possibly becoming romantic with Finn is just bloat. Also, please remove that hideous Maz Kanata sequence, one of many Phantom Menace moments that marred TLJ. I didn't hate it like some of you but my God, what a mess. A pretty mess, though.
