My cat would like to humbly suggest where you might like to consider directing your next outlay of hard-won currency:

"A flabbergasting experiment in publishing hubris, Monograph charts the art and literary world's increasing tolerance for the language of the empathetic doodle directly through the work of one of its most esthetically constipated practitioners.

For thirty years, writer and artist (i.e. cartoonist) Chris Ware (b. 1967) has been testing the patience of readers and fine art fans with his complicated and difficult-to-comprehend picture stories in the pages of The New Yorker, The New York Times and other charitable periodicals—to say nothing of challenging the walls of the MCA Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art with his unevocative delineations and diagrams.

Arranged chronologically with all thoughtful critical and contemporary discussion common to the art book genre jettisoned in favor of Mr. Ware's unchecked anecdotes and unscrupulous personal asides, the author-as-subject has nonetheless tried as clearly and convivially as possible to provide a contrite, companionable guide to an otherwise unnavigable jumble of product spanning his days as a pale magnet for athletic upperclassmen's' ire up to his contemporary life as a stay-at-home dad and agoraphobic graphic novelist.

Shrewdly selected personal photos distract from justifiably little-seen early experiments littered among never-before-seen paintings and sculptures, all padded out with high-quality scans of original artwork publicizing jottings, mistakes, blunders and, especially, Mr. Ware's University juvenilia via which the reader can track a general cultural increase in tolerance for quality's decline since his work first came on "the scene." Expensive, heavy, and fashioned from the finest uncoated paper and soy-based ink, this thigh-crushing book is certain to cut off the circulation of all but the most active of comics boosters."

    TL;DR?

@toothaction would you say it's worth buying if you already own most issues of Acme, the datebooks, Building Stories etc?

    ^ Yes.

The fact that you're even asking, Glenn, makes me suspect that you don't actually own most issues of Acme, the Datebooks, Building Stories etcetera, or at least that you haven't cracked open a'one of 'em, ever! ;)

The only reason I can think of for a Ware enthusiast to not do everything in their power to bring this absolutely enormous and exquisitely thorough compendium into their home just as soon as life aligns to make such an addition possible is if they somehow have found themselves, through circumstances beyond their control, to have lost any and all interest in experiencing full-body elation, childlike wonderment and nearly complete aesthetic satisfaction.

Absolutely certain that the voluminous volume would make a fine gift for the uninitiated, too. Tears will flow and minds will melt.

    Not exaggerating. Heh.

EDIT: Written in response to a comment above that's now gone missing. I'll leave my babble in place, but feel free to ignore it, folks!

Ummm... so I dragged a 9 pound book with a 3 foot wingspan and a heavy wooden lectern to present it on out into the middle of my street to spend an hour in the sun attempting to capture even a thimble of how striking I find the publication, edited the results for however long that took, spent time arranging and coding a presentation for my favorite forum and then added purpled prose on top of that to answer a question about it... as a gag? Nope, meant every word.

If you're not interested in reading extensive, brilliantly written and heretofore unpublished prose and thoughtful annotation from an artist you seem to admire, or don't care to see his visual works that you're familiar with in a variety of forms and stages of development, printed in the largest format that the artist has ever worked in, and on the the most luxurious paper imaginable, okay. There are also dozens of photographs from his life over the past thirty years; hundreds of private works, both graphic and sculptural, that have now been shared in public for the first time ever; half a dozen little pamphlets, fully flippable, worked seamlessly and satisfyingly into the pages that they're hiding on, and, believe it or not, more. Oh, and the lot of the content is meticulously organized, lovingly arranged and gorgeously presented throughout. Sound like a cash grab full of the same crap published over and over again by a fly-by-night pulp house with wicked designs on getting you to foolishly fork over for that which they duped you into forking over for before? Hope not!

Did I mention that it's pretty flippin' big?

Buy it or don't, sir. Me? I think you'd like it.

I blame @nefasth for mentioning those buck-a-book TRUE BELIEVERS: KIRBY 100th reprints over in Jack's thread.

Anyway, meant to post these long-hunted steals a while back. Enjoy?

That's just the back cover of the issue featured in this spread from the book:
    The Acme Novelty Library Magazine, Winter 1996 & 1997 ( Vol. V, No. 8 )

Anybody happen to have any stray instalments of the comic that they might like to sell or trade, by the way? When I unearthed my cache of them a while back, I discovered dupes of 3, 4, 6, 7, 14 & 15...
...but I also discovered that my copies of 10 and 13 have gone missing:
    [IMG][IMG]
My 'spares' are what you could charitably call reading copies, though.

I'm well behind the times on him, only seen stray images, but anybody that has the attention of Koyama and D&Q is 'prolly worth further study. Any suggestions as to where to start?

EDIT: I take part of the above back - he had a few hilariously profane pages involving hard-ons and butterflies a couple of Kramers ago; I really dropped the ball on follow-up there!

Yeah, he's kind of out there. Half the time I'm wondering how he thinks up this stuff AKA what he is on and where can I can me some...

My favorite of everything I've read thus far would have to be Ant Colony, followed by:

    Very Casual
    Big Kids
    Lose #7
    Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero
    Dressing

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with anything DeForge. He is utterly bizarre and vulgar in the best way possible.

Start with his latest, Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero. It's a crazy book.
If you don't know about him, you should look out for what Deforge's pal Jesse Jacobs is doing - it's another kind of crazy.

@tuneful87 @nefasth - Thanks for the pointers and encouragement. I'd hoped to start with MD's shorter works, but reading a page or two of Ant Colony really pricked up my antennae, so I feel extra lucky to have just stumbled on this extremely inexpensive lot:
Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero will have to wait, unfortunately. Now to camp out at my mail box!

Good call on recommending Mr. Jacobs to me, neffie - I've been a convert for a while now and will occasionally try to guide others into his world. It's a pretty magical place to visit.

Chuckling, but also, yikes! Glad to see some of my most beloved strips have escaped this treatment.

The contrast on some of them is sort of amusing, as the design on a few is sort of interesting, but I think all together it is just overly much.

What had me laughing, really, was this variation I flipped to in a collection that I just picked up:
I don't disagree that the concept loses something when they're all mashed together like in the first image.

I was just too lazy to take a snap earlier.

Nevertheless, I should say I am at least thankful to the artist, though as much to you David, for the reminder of fond memories of days gone past (probably from an era which doesn't even exist anymore.... and I'll care not to think on that too long before I has a bigger sad).

So I downloaded some CBRs of DC's Who's Who, as you do, and was happily extracting Kirby pages when this entry jumped out at me:

'Xamie Hernandez? So him... and who knew?

Totally must have helped out with the water bill that month.

Yeah, I wasn't grabbing Who's Who then either. Funny part about the series, it was being released concurrently with Crisis on Infinite Earths, the famed company-wide crossover "event" that technically invalidated almost every page of the bio series! Heh.
