Sculpted with Super Sculpey. Cast in Smooth-On Oomoo as a one piece mold and sliced on the back to be a split mold. Painted with hobby shop acrylic paints.

Have you ever broke a promise? Or set a goal that you failed to reach? What happens when you fill in one eye on the daruma doll…and make it impossible for yourself to fill in the other? That’s the concept/idea/feeling behind this figure. I’m sure that I’m not the first to come up with this design but I haven’t seen it before. It entered my mind and seemed like it could make a fun little sculpt. Then I bought an Oomoo kit from Smooth-On and cast everything around me until I ran out, the daruma included.

Daruma’s are fairly popular throughout the world at this point. I think most people would recognize the imagery. I first discovered the Daruma while playing Animal Crossing on Nintendo DS. Did a little reading on the subject and have been intrigued by the concept, story, and imagery ever since. I hope this toy isn’t seen as an offensive bastardization of the daruma.

    Future plans:
    • Come up with a more descriptive name for this interpretation of the daruma, but for now “Eyeless Daruma” will do.
    • Do a small painted run like this guy.
    • Re-sculpt a bit larger with more detail.
Any feedback is welcomed! What do y’all think?

Thanks! I wanted to mimic the rough paper texture of actual Darumas.

I painted a small run with the traditional Daruma doll coloring. I'm working on finishing up my web shop.

I'm also working on a new toy called "Demon Wrestler" or "Oni Resuraa" that I will preview soon.

Decided to go with Storenvy. Shameless self-promotion http://pnl.storenvy.com/

Calling myself "PNL Toy Works"...a bit of a cop-out but the idea of coming up with a spiffy name for myself just doesn't feel right. Thanks for looking and if you buy one of my toys I will love you forever.
